(ARA) - A trip to Hawaii is an almost universal dream for Americans, and it's become more and more accessible over the years. Gone are the days when only the ultra-wealthy could afford to make the trip. Despite high fuel prices, flying or cruising to Hawaii can actually be a great value, and the trip of a lifetime.

There are some things that are written into Hawaii vacations. First and foremost, time at the beach. Swimming, sunning, surfing - it's just a part of a trip to America's slice of South Pacific paradise. You'll also see jungles and volcanoes, major features of all of the islands that are true marvels of nature. As unique and fantastic as Hawaii's natural attributes are, so too are its many sites that blend together history, art and culture.

Consider adding these sites to your vacation, but be sure to check with the concierge at local hotels - they might be able to direct you to cultural performances, and many resorts hold traditional luaus on site.

* Bishop Museum - This museum of Hawaiian culture was founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop, in honor of his late wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. She was the last descendant in the royal Kamehameha family line and avidly collected Hawaiian artifacts. Those artifacts, combined with her royal family heirlooms, were the basis of the museum, which is now the largest in the state and hosts a wide variety of family-friendly exhibits on Hawaii's natural and cultural history.

* Polynesian Cultural Center - Located on Oahu, this center is more than just a museum - it's an experience. There are eight island "villages" that you can visit to see the lifestyles of different Polynesian cultures; try your hand at fire starting; learn the haka, a powerful dance performed by Maori warriors; or take in one of their shows, like "Ha - Breath of Life," which features more than 100 performers in a tale of Polynesian life.

* Queen Emma Summer Palace - Did you know that Hawaii was once ruled by a royal family? Get a glimpse of the time before statehood in this restored 1847 house that was the residence of Hawaiian King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma. It has been preserved in its Victorian era splendor, with furnishings and personal belongings of the monarchs. It is operated by the Daughters of Hawaii organization and offers a wonderful glimpse into the lives of Hawaii's royal family.

You can plan your own vacation to Hawaii more easily than ever before. Head to the Web to find cheap flights on sites like Travelocity.com, which also offer deals on rental cars and hotels. Exploring both the cultural and natural riches of Hawaii will ensure that it is a trip you'll never forget.
