Thank you, Moses Lake School Board
At their last meeting, the Moses Lake School Board authorized a land purchase in the amount of $1.4 million for 6 acres of land adjacent to Moses Lake High School. This purchase was made to address concerns that first responders would have difficulty reaching the high school in the event of an emergency. The issue with current traffic access via Sharon Avenue is that there aren’t enough lanes of traffic for the number of students and teachers at the high school. This land purchase allows the school district to substantially increase access without paving a completely new road or expanding any existing roads.

Doing jus-tice to a French dip sandwich
I’ve always been partial to a French dip sandwich. The toasty bread piled high with perfectly cooked meat, sometimes topped with a slice of melted Swiss cheese. Trouble is, not everyone does it well, or the same way. I recall one place serving theirs on a chunk of a rustic baguette. You had to dip it into the jus to be able to sink your teeth into it. There was the place that cooked their own meat, but it was so overcooked that the shreds they served on the bun were chalky dry; the jus they served was the actual juice from the cooking pan, which was mighty tasty. Some places use deli sliced roast beef. The place that served it on the baguette mentioned above scorched it to death on a flat-top grill. It should have been there just long enough to heat through. Another place dipped the serving of beef into a pot of jus to warm it up before placing it on the bread.

The excitement of the rodeo
Have you ever been to a rodeo? Getting asked what my favorite rodeo is, and what my favorite events are, is quite normal when someone finds out my family and I rodeo. To me those are easy questions, but also really tough. I have been to some pretty amazing rodeos. Rodeos that really showcase the athletic ability of the cowboys and animals. Out of all the rodeos in the Pacific Northwest, my favorite rodeo is the Pendleton Roundup. There is not another rodeo like it in the whole wide world. The Pendleton Roundup rodeo is held on the high school football field in Pendleton, Oregon. The Pendleton Roundup has been held on grass for 107 years and the rodeo has shown significant growth. Last year they added women’s breakaway to the rodeo. The town shuts down for the rodeo. It’s not uncommon to see a world champion cowboy and his horses walking down the same sidewalk as you.

Chief for a Day
Getting in tune with nature
There is an underlying cadence, a rhythm if you will, that I believe has been carefully interwoven into the world that we find ourselves. You can say the heartbeat of nature was placed there by God. Or by the universe. You can say it came from wherever you please. I’m not a scientist. Or a philosopher or theologian who has all the answers and can summon facts at the drop of a hat to support my stance. I came to my conclusion on my own and believe that when we truly immerse ourselves, when we tap into the natural beauty around us that we can, as Ralph Waldo Emerson says, “adopt the pace of nature” and use that experience to inform our everyday lives.

Getting hooked on homemade 'cracker crack'
A few years back some friends introduced my wife and me to a saltine cracker seasoning mix they had made up. The crackers had a bit of an oily feel, but that was overshadowed by the savory/spicy flavor we were tasting. The cracker retained its crispy crunch, but had a bit of a translucent look, and the spices were visible all over the surface. We liked them a lot, and if I recall correctly, I may have hovered over the bowl eating a few more than my fair share. In fact, we jokingly called the seasoning “cracker crack,” because we couldn’t get enough of them.

PUBLIC NOTICE The City of Royal City is accepting public comment on the potential resolution of a conversion of park land that was acquired with a state grant from the Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO). In 1975, the city acquired approximately 8 acres for a public park. A condition of the grant is that the property acquired be owned and managed for public outdoor recreation use. In 1994, the property was sold for non-public use which created a conversion. RCO policy permits approval of a conversion when other land of equal value and public outdoor recreation usefulness is substituted. The city is submitting a request for approval of the conversion and replace it with a similar property of equal or greater value. The City of Royal City is requesting public comment from June 5, 2018 to July 6, 2018 on the alternatives being considered. The City is considering 12 parcels east of the current City Park that is currently vacant as the conversion property. An alternative location that was considered in the past was the land south of the water treatment plant on Road F or Apple Avenue. The public may also make suggestions for land replacement properties for the city to consider. Public comment can be received or Information regarding this proposal can be received by contacting Shilo Christensen at shilo@royalcitywa.org, by visiting during business hours 445 Camelia Street Royal City WA 99357, or by letter at PO Box 1239 Royal City WA 99357. Written comments received by the City of Royal City from the public will be submitted to the Recreation Conservation Office with the City's request. #06014/197297 Pub: June 5, 2018
