Sound off to the voters

Hooray! It’s election season, that time of year when a hundred voices compete to promise that they will do a fantastic job running our government, or at least not botch it as badly as the other guy.

Americans have kind of a love-hate relationship with politics. We all complain about it, but at the same time our country and our communities can’t function without elected officials. At the end of filing week last month, there were 68 candidates for 23 offices who will be on the ballot in November. Jokes about politicians notwithstanding, we believe the people who paid the fee and threw their hats into the ring really do have the best interests of the community at heart and really want to give good service in office. As the Basin’s primary newspaper, we want to give those folks a chance to speak their piece to the electorate and tell us all what they hope to accomplish in the office they’re vying for.

Candidate columns can be submitted to Lynne Lynch at editor@columbiabasinherald.com or in person or by mail at 813 W. Third Ave. They should be 500-700 words in length and should focus on the candidate’s own qualifications and vision rather than on the opponent. We would also prefer to have a color photo that we can print with the column, but that’s not absolutely necessary. Due to space and time constraints, we only plan on running one column per candidate.

So come on, hopefuls for public office. Tell us what you want the voters to know. Then we can all make better-informed decisions about our political future.
