New farmworker housing now available in Mattawa

MATTAWA — Washington Growers League recently completed Phase 1 of a three-phase project to build a new housing complex in Mattawa.

“It is for seasonal-occupancy workers,” said Washington Growers League executive director Michael Gempler.

Dubbed Mattawa Slope, the dormitory-style complex is open to all agriculture workers within 60 miles looking for temporary housing, explained Port of Mattawa director Lars Leland.

“This is going to help reduce the stress for housing,” said Leland.

Mattawa Slope is situated on a five-acre parcel west of roundabout in Mattawa.

Currently, the complex consists of three buildings, one office and a manager’s apartment. Wendy Lopez will be the on-site manager. Each room can sleep four people, offering 144 beds total between the three buildings. There are also shared bathrooms and common areas, Gempler explained.

The complex also offers free WiFi, porches and heating and air conditioning, said Gempler. Rent is $10 per bed, and 25 percent of the beds will be kept open for walk-ins. There is also a keypad entry to ensure safety.

“We pride ourselves on maintenance and housekeeping,” said Gempler.

Phase 2 of the project is set to begin this month, and will include four more buildings and 192 beds. The second phase is expected to be complete by the end of the year, said Gempler. Phase 3 will also include four more buildings and 192 beds.
