Federal health care law: A string of broken promises
GUEST EDITORIAL
Elections matter for country's future
Four years ago during the Presidential campaign we were treated to what seemed like a high school ASB election or prom royalty election complete with pep rallies by the media. Very few questions were asked about Obama's past and what he really believes. Thus we had millions of voters vote for "Leader of the Free World" based on the following: "He is cute, he is young, he can dance, he is black, he promises hope and change, he is cool, he plays basketball." His socialist background, his father's beliefs, his 20 years with Jeremiah Wright and Black Liberation Theology( right out of Marxist teaching), his sealed college records, and his total lack of experience or leadership did not seem to matter.

The $38 million project is anticipated to bring 30 new jobs to Grant County when operations begin in 2014 and is part of the company's $185 million U.S. expansion. Driving through Quincy, it appears the town is celebrating the new business too. A congratulatory sign is displayed on the front of the Reimann Simmons House, marking the special occasion.

Reader decries 'cut and paste' political categories
You are who you are by the strength of your character and the force of your personality. Dennis Knepp cuts and pastes us all to fit neatly into his two categories. I didn't like mine much, how about you? There is not much freedom when someone can assign you a viewpoint - not very liveral. Mutual respect, freedom of expression, and freedom of conscience are the founding stones of our beloved Republic. But as for labels, call me an American, and I'll grant you the same thing. And if you have an opinion, I would like to hear it, but divisive straw-man arguments don't build up anyone.

Know your rights
Our nation is a Constitutional republic. Not a kingdom to be ruled over by whichever party manages to win an election. Both major parties have overstepped their lawful authority for years. Claiming "National-Security," or "For the Public-Good" or even to "Protect-Freedom"! Yeah right. Think presidential executive orders circumventing the separation of powers as defined in the Constitution. By design our educational system no longer teaches our founding documents and how we became the U.S.A. Students are growing up believing their rights come from what the government allows them to do. I'd also like to point out that every rule, regulation and law carries with it the unspoken threat of violence, compliance by force. Think Hitler, Stalin and Mao. Unless of course you are a member of the govt. The growing size and intrusion by government carries even more force with it. E.P.A., D.O.E., D.H.S., D.E.A., B.A.T.F & E., etc. At some point, a group of "scrappy armed revolutionaries" may again be forced to rise up and demand the rule-of-law be restored, to restrict our government to only those powers given it by our Constitution. You know, that old document they all swore to preserve, protect and uphold. It's the supreme law of the land!

Fresh News From MarDon!
The MarDon Resort fishing dock has finally come alive with fish catching action. Crappie, Bluegill, Perch and catfish are showing up daily. Some very nice Trout and Bass are also being reported. The Walleye fishing continues to be tough for most boat anglers. I believe this is due to the vast amount of forage in the system this year. Levi & Mike Meseberg went bass fishing last night for only two hours, yet landed 12 Largemouth with some in the 4lb. catergory. The fish are especially fat and healthy this time of year. The summer keeps the water temperatures along the 80F mark and the reservoir water level slowly dropping, with a current water level of 1,031.7 ft. I can't wait for our winter walleye at the MarDon Dock. Medicare Beach has been showing some quality bank fishing for Rainbow Trout.

Representative Akins' views reflect Republican/Tea Party values of today
Rep. Akins', a House Science committeeman, totally misrepresented the truth about pregnancy occurring from a rape attack, but actually did speak the truth about his real perspective on women. Rep. Akins AND Rep. Paul Ryan cosponsored a House bill that would give fetuses full personhood rights from the moment of fertilization. This bill was rejected by voters in several conservative states, including Mississippi and Colorado. They have voted to defund federal family planning programs, including contraceptive pills, IUD's and other contraceptive methods and preventive cancer screening for women; supported the "Let Women Die Act", allowing hospitals to refuse to provide a woman emergency abortion care, even if her life is on the line; and authored a budget that dismantles Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare. They voted No on the Violence Against Women Act, that protects ALL women from abuse. They voted No on a bill to increase the minimum wage to a living wage, and NO to protect water, air, and the land.

The Fishin' Magician: Year of the Salmon
This has been a banner year for salmon fishing here in Central Washington. Sockeye salmon returns have been the big story this season, with a record return to the upper Columbia River. Over 300,000 have passed over Wells Dam and there are still fish trickling up the system. The return of sockeye to Lake Wenatchee has been astonishing, too. Early estimates were for 30,000 fish and now it appears that over 60,000 are going to make their way over Tumwater Dam and into the lake.

Reader urges reduced speed on Hwy. 2
Once again there has been a fatal car crash on Highway 2 between Ephrata and Soap Lake. I lived at a mobile home park in that location for over ten years and have seen countless crashes on that highway. Several have resulted in deaths. I myself have nearly been hit on more than one occasion. Lefthand turns on that road are more than hazardous. they are life-threatening. With so many homes on that stretch of highway, why on earth is the speed limit 60 mph?? And why is there no turn center turn lane for the left hand turns the residents must make?? How many more people will die in car crashes that could easily be prevented by lowering the speed limit to 45 mph and creating a center turn lane?? I just don't understand why the speed limit is 60 mph in what is essentially a residential area. I think changes need to be addressed. And not in the future, now before someone else dies needlessly.
Kudos to fair organizers

Past PUD commissioner praises Allred
There have been very few Commissioners in Grant PUD's history like Randy Allred. If there were more like him on the Board our PUD wouldn't be facing many of its problems and recent embarrassing disclosures. Randy has steadfastly represented all the ratepayers of this county faithfully. He is not a "special interest Commissioner" or one to avoid unpopular issues. He has been honest and made consistently wise decisions on PUD issues. In my book he will share the company of past Commissioners like Roy Mundy, Harold Beckemeier, Dean Hagerty, Bill Judge and others. Lets hope Randy's replacement will have the same high level of integrity and good judgment that Randy has.

Unfortunately, someone is taking, damaging and/or knocking down Republican candidate signs. There are several of us that have been maintaining these signs. Also, at another location all signs were knocked down. I put them all back even the democrat signs. I want to play fair and expect the same courtesy. These signs are expensive to candidates and those supporting them. There is a law regarding removing or defacing lawfully placed political advertising, including yard signs or billboards, without authorization. Defacing or removing each item is a separate violation. (Rev. Code Wash. 29A.84.040) This crime is punishable up to 90 days in prison, up to $1,000 fine, or both. Let's all play fair during these upcoming political races.

Olympic athletes taxed
The U.S. Womens Gymnastics Team won the Olympic gold medal in London recently. After the team's last member performed and joined her team mates to await the judges decision, did anyone else notice what I did? The faces of those young girls all reflected what has made America the super-power it is and the country people will risk death trying to reach. I saw white, black, oriental, and other blends of ethnic origins in the smiles of those American faces. With all the problems within our country and government, it's nice to see individuals allowed to sacrifice and struggle as hard as they choose to reach goals, with a minimum of governmental interference. Except of course the Internal Revenue Service demand for as much as 35% of any cash bonus that comes with winning a medal. Geeze, really? Fifty percent of Americans don't pay income tax. But we need to whack our Olympic athletes for money earned on foreign soil, while trying to represent us! Rats, just when I was feeling so proud to be a American.

Reader weighs in on Colorado shooting
As a retired public school and university administrator, a life member of the NRA, and a firm believer in our country's freedom guaranteed by the second amendment I've noticed that almost all of the horrific attacks such as the one most recently in Aurora, Colorado have happened in so-called "weapons free zones". They are not about the attacker's weapons or ammunition, they are about a crazed mind and opportunity. Only one law abiding citizen in the audience with a small caliber gun who knew how to use it, could have neutralized the whole event.
Teacher appreciates free newspapers as instructional tool
I wanted to say thank you for providing free newspapers to our classroom this year. We received newspapers weekly and the students really seemed to enjoy them. I focused on having students recognize and read the main text features in a newspaper, such as the title, cost, heading, text, captions, photographs, maps, diagrams, advertisements and table of contents sections, as well as many others. They really seem to hae a handle on this important skill. It was one area our third and fourth grade students struggled with in the MSP in previous years, and although I teach it within our reading series, the newpaper is a great real-life example they will see throughout their lives.

Willadene (Willie) Livingston
Willadene (Willie) Livingston, a long time resident of Othello, WA, passed away peacefully at her home in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 15th. Born on April 6th, 1925 near Fairbury Nebraska, she was the youngest of five siblings. After moving to Powell, Wyoming with her family, she met E.J. (Mike) Livingston who was serving in the area for the CCC. They married in Tacoma in 1945 where Willie finished nursing school and earned her degree as a Registered Nurse while Mike served in the Marines during the War. Their first child, Sally Ann, was born in Tacoma. They soon moved to Huntsville, TX, where Mike completed college while Willie worked at the local hospital. Their second child, Michael Elwyn, was born in Huntsville before the family returned to Washington State in the mid fifties. Willie enjoyed being a mother and homemaker, and they had their third child, Lisa Marie here. She also enjoyed playing a lot of bridge and hosting parties at the family home. After Mike passed away in 1968, Willie worked at Othello Community Hospital and also volunteered with many Red Cross blood drives. Her passion for reading led her to serve on the local library board. Family was the center of her world. Her daughter, Sally Elmore (Dan), preceded her in death in 2009. She is survived by her son, Michael Livingston (Jana) and daughter Lisa Livingston. Her grandchildren, who were the light of her life, include Danielle Duty, Erin Meyer, Brandon Livingston, Brianne Cardenas, Brittney Livingston and Alexandra Livingston and eight great-grandchildren.
