MATTAWA - Early visitors this Saturday, Aug. 25, to the annual Comm "Unity" Day for Mattawa. Beverly, Schawana and Desert Aire should have plenty of energy for the day-long event.

They will be treated to a free breakfast at Hund Memorial Park at 7:30 a.m. The traditional country breakfast will be sponsored by Milbrandt Vineyards, Leland & Sons, Evans Fruit, Sabin Farms, Wahluke Enhancement Organization, Mattawa-Desert Aire Lions Club and Sandbar Marine.

Some folks are likely to run off that energy within an hour of breakfast. The 5K fun run will depart the park at 8 a.m. The 1-mile run will start at 8:30.

There will be a parade at 11 a.m. The grand marshal will be Roxie Phillips, long-time resident and teacher. She retired this spring after 35 years of service.

Then all eyes will turn to Hund Park for the rest of the day. It will have food venders, game booths, informational booths and stage entertainment.

One of the stage acts will be Groove Principal. It is a rockin' band that plays music from the 70s, 80s and 90s as well as contemporary tunes.

Sure to be a hit at the stage will be the belly busting burrito competition. There will also be salsa making and pie baking contests. To learn more about these, you may contact event chairman Maggie Celaya at 509-830-7117.

The day will close with a dance on the basketball court at Hund Park from 6-11 p.m. It will be sponsored by the Wahluke High School class of 2013.

Persons who would like to participate in the parade or set up a booth in the park should contact Celaya.
