| August 25, 2012 6:00 AM

Janie Field, mother of Quincy and George residents Ed Field, Kelly Field and Robbie Field, and Durango Colorado resident Marsha Schuetz died on August 22, 2012. She was 90.

Janie was born to John Walter Ertel and Ida Matilda Hamilton Ertel on February 8th, 1922 in Mancos, Colorado. Her twin, John Walter was born a few minutes later. "Jane" was always the largest and very protective of "Jack".

Janie's parents owned a funeral home in Cortez, CO. Her mother Ida passed away in 1928 leaving him with 5 young children to raise. He met and married Edna Lindsay in July 1932. She was a widow with two small children. Together they had one child, making 8 children to love and raise together. Janie told her family many stories about her wonderful childhood and the loving step-mother who came into the lives of 5 motherless children.

After graduation from Cortez High School, Janie entered nurses training in Colorado Springs, Co., graduating in 1944 as a registered nurse. She worked at the Johnson Hospital in Cortez during WWII. She was the only R.N. with one doctor in a small hospital of only 10 beds.

Janie met Marshall Field in Dec. of 1944. He was visiting his parents in Lewis, Co. after being shot down over France and hidden by a French family before he was liberated. He was a 1st Lt. in the US Army Air Corps., where he was a pilot on a B-24. They were married in 1945 and moved to Lewis where Marshall worked in a bean warehouse and they rented a farm.

In 1957/58 they moved with their 3 children to a farm in George, Washington where they raised cattle and alfalfa, started a feed lot, and had another child.

Janie went back to nursing for 28 years in a 16 bed hospital in Quincy, in 1963. She loved her job, taking care of surgical, medical, CCU and obstetrical patients. She also was an incredible cook, winning first prize for her cherry pie and raves for her enchiladas, bread, cookies, and cinnamon roles. She raised a huge vegetable garden every year and filled the pantry with home canned goods.

Janie was preceded in death in 1999 by her husband Marshall of 54 years; her sisters Virginia Ertel Mosher, Helen Lindsay Ray; and her twin brother Jack.

Janie is survived by her daughter Marsha Ann Field Schuetz (Jon), of Durango, Co.; sons Roy Edward Field (Kit), Kelly Arthur Field (Vicky), and Robert Weir Field (Liesa) of George and Quincy; 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews; sister Betty Ertel Dillon and brothers Walter and Donald Ertel, and Richard Lindsay.
