Contract awarded for new laser show

GRAND COULEE - A new laser light show will be coming to Grand Coulee Dam, possibly as early as May 2013.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $1.6 million contract recently to LumaLaser, of Eugene, Ore., to update both the content and equipment of the show, first presented in 1989. Work will begin this fall, and officials hope to have the new presentation ready by May 2013, said Lynne Brougher, communications officer at the dam.

"The goal is to present a more comprehensive story about Grand Coulee Dam, including its influence on people, local communities and the nation's energy needs," said a press release issued by the bureau.

The company will consult with "stakeholders," including Bureau of Reclamation management partners and local chambers of commerce. Brougher said. Input from the chambers will be considered public comment, she said.

The lasers used in the new show will be much more energy-efficient, Brougher said, using up to 75 percent less energy.
