Underhanded and unethical? Sneaky and shady also? Sad, but true. Todd Voth and Bill Ecret were council members who proved their lack of ethics by ambushing our city manager during a council meeting. They fired him, then had to undo the firing because it was underhanded, unethical, sneaky, shady and possibly illegal. All this was done at huge expense to the city. Remember that? They were not up for election at the time, so they remained on the council. Now is a chance to remedy that, as they have not changed their practices as shown by this filing fiasco.

Bait and switch, Chicago politics
In the next several weeks four past mayors of Moses Lake will write letters to the editor. The subjects will be about the current city council and what direction it appears to be going the last two years. The recent letter by Dean Hankins sums up the bait and switch of two of the current council members. Two years ago Doug Sly called four members of the current and past council, part of the “Shadow Council,” referring to secret meetings, outside legal counsel, and vote rigging to obtain their agenda. One of that council was defeated soundly in the 2016 election but has filled again for 2018. Two other members are seeking to be elected instead of re-elected for 2018. This is an example of “Bait and Switch.” Those four were responsible for the debacle that resulted in the firing and re-hiring of the city manager. I know that one of the other mayors will address the costs of this decision to the citizens of Moses Lake.

Warden summer food program starts this week
WARDEN — The summer lunch program in Warden for children 18 years of age and younger begins today. Breakfast and lunch are served at the Warden School lunchroom, 101 West Beck Way. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to children free of charge; only children are eligible. Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 8 a.m., and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The summer food program starts Tuesday and runs through Aug. 3. Meals will not be served July 4.

Maria Antonia “Toña” Talbot, longtime resident of Warden, passed away on June 22, 2017 at home surrounded by her family and loved ones. Toña is survived by her two sons Alan and Gregory Talbot, her daughter-in-law Veronica Talbot and her three granddaughters Nastacia, Ahlivia and Elena Talbot. She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years Lynn Talbot and her parents. Her family could not have asked for a better mother and/or grandmother. She meant everything to them and was a great teacher in life. Her mission in life was to serve the Lord and to spread His good word. Antonia, who is still wanted and will be missed here on earth, will never be forgotten for her good works and our memories. Her family will not be mourning her passing but will be celebrating the life that they shared with her.

What is wrong with people?
Yesterday morning, a gunman opened fire on a group of congressmen who were practicing for a baseball game, wounding six people. As of this writing, Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La. and lobbyist Mike Mika are in critical condition. Early accounts indicate that the shooter, identified as James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., approached another congressman who was watching and asked whether the players were Republicans or Democrats. (Ironically, the game the congressmen were preparing for is a traditionally friendly rivalry between the two parties.) At times like this, myriad questions arise. Who was the shooter? What was his motive? Why those particular victims? Could it have been predicted? But one question overshadows them all:

The weather this past week has improved the fishing for several species. The crappie and trout fishing have been impressive in both size and numbers of fish.
