Blacktop bash raises money for cystic fibrosis

MOSES LAKE — Who could have guessed that craft beer and raising money for a good cause went together? Well Saturday night at Moses Pointe they did just that, as the Blacktop Bash for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation raised thousands of dollars for a good cause.
Saturday night’s event was the fourth cystic fibrosis (CF) fundraiser held at Moses Pointe, but this year’s gala was slightly different. Organizer Liz Porter, who coordinated the event with The Links at Moses Pointe, focused on crafts beers and invited regional breweries to compete for the favor of the attendees.
“So the objective is people buy tastings and they go sample, they vote for their favorite brewery and we have a custom made trophy for the winner,” Porter explained. “What is kind of fun about this event is that we can take funds from what we raised here in Moses Lake and then we can sponsor riders to participate in another CF event in the Tri-Cities in August called Cycle for Life.”
For Porter the cause is personal, as her niece, Lila Rose, was diagnosed with CF at only 3 weeks old. CF is a “progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time,” according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s website.
“Right from birth they knew something was wrong and so she went to Children’s Hospital in Seattle and at about 3 weeks she was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. Which if that is going to happen it’s great to have that early diagnosis so you have that information right away. Health wise, she has had some bumps in the road but overall she is doing very well.”
Funds raised through Saturday night’s event will be used to sponsor riders who want to join Team Lila Rose in the Cycle For Life event. The funds raised will also be used to match the money that the riders raise for the race. That cause brought hundreds of enthusiastic people out to Moses Pointe Saturday night to sip beer, enjoy a slider buffet and listen to the musical styling’s of Uncle Rico’s Revenge, a Seattle-based cover band. The amount raised at the event was not immediately available.
