MOSES LAKE — For Liz Porter, arranging a fundraiser to help with cystic fibrosis research and treatment isn’t just part of her job, or a cause she has embraced.

It’s about family.

“I have a niece, and she was three weeks old when she was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF), so fund raising is a pretty big thing for our family,” Porter said.

Porter is the events coordinator with The Links at Moses Pointe, which is sponsoring the Blacktop Bash 2017 fundraiser for CF this year on Saturday, June 24.

According to Porter, the bash begins at 6:30 p.m. this year and will feature a slider buffet, local craft beer tasting, and live music from Seattle-based cover band Uncle Rico’s Revenge. Tickets are $40, with $10 from each ticket going straight to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and can be purchased online at www.mosespointe.com.

Porter said this is the fourth year Moses Pointe has hosted the fundraiser, and over the years, has collected $45,000 for people living with CF.

“We’ve had an average of 250 people each year and we’re hoping to get that many again,” she said. “We’re looking for a way to kick off the summer featuring local and regional craft breweries and raise money for a good cause.”

According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, CF is caused by “a defective gene that causes a thick, sticky buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas, and other organs,” causing infections and often shortening the lives of those with the disorder.

“Years ago, people with CF only lived into their teens,” Porter said. “But now, they are living into their 30s and 40s.”

Porter said her niece Lila Rose is six, and is doing very well.

Lila has a cycling team also riding for her, Team Lila Rose, part of the CF Foundation’s Cycle For Life. Porter added that Moses Pointe will use some of the proceeds to match cyclists riding in the Tri-Cities Cycle For Life event in August.
