Wahluke students compete in inaugural Olympics June 13

MATTAWA — Kids from Saddle Mountain, Morris Schott and Mattawa Elementary School will be competing in the first ever Wahluke Olympics June 13. The event will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Wahluke High School track.

“We’re really excited to stage this competition,” said Joel Dugan, track coach at and Wahluke Jr. and Senior High School. “Each elementary competes against the other. There are two events, the 100m dash and the soccer ball kick. The male and female students have been selected by our awesome PE teachers to represent each grade and gender.”

Dugan said the kids competing are from grades K-5, and adds the field has been narrowed down to the Top 3 students with the fastest times and who can kick the ball the farthest.

The top finisher of each gender, Dugan said, will receive a championship trophy.

“The winning student in each race will get a trophy they get to keep. The winning school will get a giant trophy that they get to keep for the year and have their name engraved on it for the trophy’s life time.”

The Wahluke Enrichment Organization sponsors the event.
