Strawberries are good for more than shortcake

Strawberries are good for more than shortcake

The cultivated strawberry originated from an accidental cross between a white-fruited type brought to France from Chile in 1714 and a red-fruited species brought from the Virginia Colony to Europe in the 1600s. By the early 1800s a number of plantsmen on both sides of the Atlantic realized that larger, sweeter strawberries could be made by breeding, growing out seedlings, and selecting the offspring for improved traits. Since that time strawberry breeders have worked together and developed the tasty fruit that graces our markets today. Too bad they are picked nearly green before shipping to locations up north, like us. They really have no flavor.

Fishing report from MarDon Resort

The 2017 Rod Meseberg Spring Walleye Classic on Potholes Reservoir was a tremendous success for both the anglers and the Central Washington Fish Advisory Committee (CWFAC) teams that participated in the event, as 56 out of 57 weighed fish on Day 1. The big fish of the tournament went to Todd Priddy and Jeb Race who weighed in an 8.48-pound walleye. Jordan and Jeff Reeder took first place overall with a two day weight total of 49.86 pounds for 12 walleye — earning a nice payout of $4,230. The 57-team field in the Classic caught 487 walleye with an average weight of 2.40-pounds per fish. This is very encouraging and an indication that the efforts put forth by the CWFAC and its supporters and volunteers are having a positive impact on the walleye and the walleye fishing on Potholes Reservoir.

Swiss chard with corn and tortellini

Swiss chard is a favorite in this house, being easy to grow and easy to prepare. While the ones we have growing here are only a few inches tall, more mature specimens were recently found at the local megamart and caught my eye. Swiss chard is closely related to beets and resembles them except that chard does not have an enlarged root. The greens of both are very edible and can be cooked in the exact same way.

Citywide cleanup makes a difference

Thank you to all of the volunteers who took time out of their busy weekend to help with this past Saturday’s Vision 2020 Citywide cleanup. Your highly visible work boosts the pride that we all have in our beautiful city, and is a sign of a community that cares. This year marks the 17th year of the cleanup and would not be possible without the help of many supporting businesses and agencies. Special thanks goes out to all of our garbage bag sponsors/providers, Skaug Brothers Ace Hardware, Norco, Walgreens, Monroe House, Home Depot, Penhallurick’s True Value, Frontier Title and Lowe’s. The Porterhouse Steakhouse in Moses Lake not only provided a location for all to gather and prepare route assignments prior to the cleanup, but also provided a huge feast for all of our volunteers. Walmart, Grocery Outlet, Fran’s Snyder’s Bakery and Rich Victor of Frito Lay helped with food and drink for the barbecue. Special thanks to the City of Moses Lake, Lakeside Disposal, the Moses Lake Chamber of Commerce, KBSN/KDRM, the Columbia Basin Herald and iFiber. Vision 2020 urges all citizens to continue to clean up your neighborhoods and then maintain a litter free environment. Finally, enjoy a clean community.

Watering tips, regimens for the urban gardener

As the weather improves with our warmer temperatures and nicer days, gardeners are planting and starting their watering regimens while yards and gardens are beginning to green up. The way plants are watered impacts our quality of life. Pesticides and fertilizers that can run off in soil and/or leach into the ground water are often the result of watering practices everyone uses. By applying sound water management principles gardeners can produce healthier higher yielding plants and crops, help minimize water contamination and runoff, and maximize water infiltration.

Fake news can quickly become real news

A story recycles itself on social media and reappears as what seems to be a brand-new story, four years later. Most recently, a story on a double murder in an Othello orchard recently recycled itself on social media four years later. There are a few ways that can happen: Facebook will recirculate stories a year or more later as part of its look back function. This isn’t an uncommon feature and can actually be quite helpful to journalists looking to revisit or update old stories. News junkies in general like to see what happened a few years ago.

April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time to listen to survivors and consider ways to prevent further harm. As a rape survivor myself, I was shocked to learn that our state’s HRC imposed a new statewide rule granting open access to women’s most intimate spaces without consulting those of us most deeply affected by it. I believe an important way to support women like me is to reverse this rule by supporting I-1552.

Ephrata man recounts Mexican mission trip

The rooster crowed right on schedule – in the morning. It wasn’t too specific as to what time. Already some of the men I was bunking with were up, getting their coffee. The teenage boys were still asleep. Sixteen of us were bunking in the same dorm room in Reynosa, Mexico. The common purpose was to build a home for a family. I had “tagged” onto a church from Raeford, N.C. I did not know any of the seven members when we met at the airport. I knew it would be another great week when they greeted me with a scrolling sign on one of their phones that said, “Welcome Dan.” Ken had made me feel welcome when I initially called him a few months ago. They would love to have another member. They were committed to build a cement block home for a family in one of the impoverished neighborhoods of Reynosa. It so happened that another church from a neighboring community in North Carolina was coming with a youth group to also build a home. We got along great. It was exciting to see the enthusiasm and energy of teenagers bonding for this worthy cause.
