Prep roundup: Moses Lake's Johnson wins third discus district championship

YAKIMA — Moses Lake thrower Elly Johnson punched her ticket to the state meet, won her third district championship and set a new personal record all in one throw.

Johnson tossed a mark of 135 feet, 3 inches to win by almost 20 feet. Johnson is ranked third in Class 4A behind Ginny Mehl of Tahoma (139'6”) and Abigail Brown of Mt. Vernon (135'10”).

Draven Nevarez continued his stellar season with a win in the javelin, throwing 190'3”. Nevarez is currently ranked second behind Battle Ground's Curtis Stradley, who is third in the nation.

Freshman Camille Carpenter also earned a berth to state, winning the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 20.73 seconds.

DeChenne leads locals at regional qualifier

CHENEY — McCall DeChenne will represent Ephrata in three events at the 2A state meet this weekend.

DeChenne took first in the 100 hurdles with a personal best 15.15 seconds and was the runner-up in the 300 hurdles (45.96) at the 2A District 5/6/7 Regional Qualifier in Cheney. The sophomore, along with teammates Nikola Brzezny, Mya Spencer and Hailey Miller, won the 4x200 relay in 1:46.55.

Spencer also qualified for state in the 400, finishing second in 58.43 seconds.

Quincy's Bryn Heikes took second place in the 800 (2:22.46).

In the boys' competition, Ephrata's Anthony Evans won the 400 in 50.07 seconds.


Softball

Warden second at districts

CONNELL — Warden was on its way to a district championship before undefeated Cle Elum/Roslyn rallied to win 11-5.

The Cougars scored two runs in the first inning behind RBI hits from Bailey Whitney and Amanda Contreras. Jizelle Pruneda's RBI double in the third inning extended the lead to 5-2. Ashlyn Yamane was 2-for-3.

However, the Warriors scored nine answered runs to deny Warden a fourth consecutive district championship.

Warden reached the title game after beating Zillah 6-2 in the semifinals.

Contreras and Aaliyah Escamilla were each 3-for-3. Freshman Jocelyn Chagoya hit a three-run home run.

Pruneda scattered five hits and struck out four from the circle.

Warden opens the Class 1A state tournament against Bellevue Christian at Columbia Playfield in Richland, noon, on Friday.

Bellevue Christian has a record of 17-2
