Tennis

The Othello tennis team came away from an impressive fifth-place finish at the 72nd Inland Empire Tennis Championships on April 28-29 in Spokane, placing in seven of 10 singles and doubles divisions.

“I’ve been doing this for 10 years and I’ve never had a team do this well with four doubles teams playing for a championship,” Huskies girls coach Robert Pruneda said. “This is the best outing I’ve ever had. I’m extremely pleased. We’re riding a high right now going into our big (CWAC) showdown with East Valley and Selah. So this is a big confidence booster for us.”

The Huskies put four in the championship matches of the two-day tournament at various locations all over Spokane. They lost all four title matches, but to play for a championship in a 32-team doubles bracket means they played exceptional tennis.

Collin Freeman and Zoee Roylance lost to a Mead team at No. 1 mixed doubles. The No. 2 mixed doubles team of Kyler Villarreal and Macy Hampton dropped a decision in the finals.

In No. 2 boys doubles, Palani Barragan and Levi Garza went three sets with a Chelan team, 6-1, 4-6, 4-6. Sterling Roylance and Miguel Lopez also played for a title.

“This is a big boy tournament with a lot of 4A schools, so to do well here says something,” Pruneda said.

The top five included Wenatchee, followed by Lewis and Clark, Mead, University and Othello.

Softball

Othello 21-26, Prosser 0-0

The defending 2A state champion Othello Huskies improved to 9-5 in the CWAC standing and to 9-6 overall with a sweep over Prosser on April 26.

Ellensburg (16-0, 14-0) remains the team to beat with four games remaining in the regular season. Both Ellensburg and Selah (13-1, 12-0) seem out of reach, but the Huskies, who have doubleheaders with Quincy (Saturday) and Grandview (May 11), can roll into the District 5-6 postseason as the No. 3 seed and host a playoff game on May 16.

Soccer

Othello (10-6) finished the CWAC regular season with a 5-1 loss to Prosser on April 25, and entered the District 5-6 postseason against Ephrata (9-6-1) Tuesday. The results were not available at presstime. The winner plays at East Valley on Friday.

Golf

The Othello boys’ team dropped a 349-362 decision to Quincy at the CWAC match at the Othello Golf Club on April 24. The Huskies defeated Wapato 362-431. No other information was available. They were scheduled to finish up the regular season at the Suncadia Invitational on Tuesday.
