SUNNYSIDE — Othello freshman Patrick Azevedo and teammate Ben Garza qualified for the 2A state golf championships with top 13 finishes on May 10 at the CWAC District 5-6 at Black Rock Creek Golf Course in Sunnyside.

Azevedo shot 79 to finish third in his first district tournament. Garza will return to the state championships, shooting 87 to finish 12th in the elite field.

The Huskies freshman showed extreme concentration when the wheels could have come off after a double-bogey on the par-4 eighth hole. Despite the double, Azevedo made the turn at 39, three strokes behind eventual district medalist Ryker Torres of East Valley, who played the front in even par.

The par-4 11th hole played havoc with the leaderboard all day long and Azevedo made his second double-bogey in four holes. But he was in good company. Ephrata’s Sean Couture and John Rawley both made double-bogey on the same hole. Hunter Jacob of Wapato scored a 7 on the treacherous hole. All six players are teeing it up at the 2A golf championships at The Creek at Qualchan in Spokane.

Team scores: 1. East Valley, 330. 2. Ephrata, 351. 3. Othello, 357. 4. Quincy, 367. 5. Prosser, 381. 6. Grandview, 395. 7. Ellensburg, 396. 8. Wapato, 440. 9. Selah, Toppenish, no score.

The state golf tournament took place Tuesday and Wednesday but the results were not available by presstime.
