Othello School Board discusses capital levy
OTHELLO — Participants on a community committee recommended the Othello School District go ahead with a study of a possible capital levy. A capital levy would be offered to voters at a date to be determined if the Othello School Board decides to proceed. The committee presented its report at Monday’s school board meeting. Its members mostly considered sports facilities, but “we looked beyond just (an) athletic complex,” said Craig Simpson, who delivered the committee’s report. The committee was asked to rank possible projects in order of priority, but “we did not rank them in any one way. We believe that they’re all needs that need to be addressed,” Simpson said. Committee members suggested board members and district officials should think about other options for any development, such as an auditorium for performing arts space and a gym. Possible projects considered by the committee included site preparation for athletic fields and a school building, one or two football fields, one or two soccer fields, two baseball fields, four softball fields, a track and an indoor pool. The board established a limit of $5 million to $7.5 million over two to three years, but Simpson said the committee thought board members and district officials might want to ask for more than that, considering all the possible projects. “There needs to be a vision for how we’re going to develop all the facilities that are associated with a new school,” Simpson said. “A master plan, if you will.” The plan should include potential for expansion, he said. In answer to a question from board member Tony Ashton, Simpson said the committee talked briefly about whether or not district patrons would approve it. That was one reason the committee suggested projects beyond athletics, he said. In addition, a school is going to be expensive, irrespective of when and where it’s built, Simpson said. “Try to get as much done with the capital levy as possible to be able to maximize your bond,” he said. Board member Stewart Hilmes said the district does need to develop a master plan, not just for an activities complex but for possible school expansion. Board members had discussed offering a capital levy sometime in the spring, but board member Rob Simmons said he would prefer to wait until the board has a clearer picture of the district’s needs, and where a capital levy would fit in with a possible construction bond. District officials sponsored a meeting Jan. 30 to talk about the possibility of expansion, possibly a new high school, possibly some other combination of buildings or programs. District superintendent Chris Hurst said about 50 percent of the people attending the meeting indicated a preference for a new high school. Committees are being set up to research the options for a new high school and possible designs. Meetings are scheduled for March 7, 23 and 28, April 11 and 25, and May 9 and 25. The goal is to make a recommendation to the school board on a construction bond by June.

Are you dealing with claustrophobic spiritual distress?
Yes, there are things I enjoy about winter. For example, I love Christmas. It is not just a day but a season that lasts for twelve days. This gives me an excuse to leave our Christmas tree up a while longer, and I can avoid being called lazy for not taking it down at the end of December. Why not take more time to enjoy all those lights and decorations, right?

MLSD numbers don't add up
Moses Lake School District wants to you believe that a bigger high school will equal smarter students.
School facilities are a smart investment
We support the Moses Lake School District construction bond and hope others will join us in supporting education and economic growth in our community. We are proud to live in Moses Lake and appreciate the great education our three children received here, which allowed them to fulfill their dreams. We want that same educational success for our grandchildren and for all children in our community. Our daughter was a teacher in MLSD for many years, and we saw how overcrowding and portable classrooms made teaching and learning even harder. We believe new facilities are a smart investment to create quality learning environments that will prepare students for future challenges. Passing this bond will also help us attract and retain top-notch teachers as well as businesses that seek to expand in a community that invests in its future workforce.
Moses Lake students serve as pages in state House
OLYMPIA - Two Moses Lake homeschoolers recently got the chance to witness the legislative process up close as pages in the state House of Representatives.
The future of our schools is inn the hands of our community
Our high school is the second largest in the state and over its intended capacity. We have had to implement a staggered schedule to meet students’ needs now. In elementary, my child’s classroom has over 30 students. Lakeview Elementary and Garden Heights Elementary will have to house their fifth-grade classes in portables at Chief Moses Middle School because they have no more room. Other elementary schools are adding portables to make enough room to house their students next year at a cost to our school district. There is no more room to spare.

School bond ballot – vote 'no'
Don’t throw your ballot away if you want the bond defeated. That is effectively a vote for passing the bond. Vote “no” if you can’t afford more taxes or recognize that the project is at least 27 million dollars too expensive. Percentage of votes cast determines who wins.
Hay conference set for Feb. 15
MOSES LAKE — The annual meeting of the Mid-Columbia Basin Hay Growers Association is scheduled for Feb. 15 at Big Bend Community College. Registration opens at 8 a.m. in the college’s ATEC building.
School bond pros and cons
We just had our properties reassessed so that is tough. I get it and I know that a lot of people are on fixed incomes and can’t afford the increase. Some of you may be able to apply for a senior exemption. I don’t have children here and never will so I don’t have a personal gain when it comes to my family. But I do care for the children in our community and I care about our community as a whole. This tax would be a burden on property owners in the MLSD area. We have classes that go till 5 p.m. and lunches that start at 9:30 for the kids that start school at 7 or 7:30. MLHS serves a population of over 40,000. We have businesses coming. There are apartments being built. More and more kids are doing online learning which isn’t fair because they don’t get the social aspects of high school. People considering a job here look at our high school and make their moving decisions based on what we currently offer. If we get a new high school we can offer more sports and learning options for students and they may be able to go between the two schools to take specialized classes. This will offer healthy competition between the schools and can keep the kids from traveling to play sports with other schools outside our area. We would have a better chance of attracting more professional people and more shopping. Our property values can increase. This will allow healthy growth for our town; it will create more jobs, construction for the next few years, teaching/administrative jobs. As we grow the additional income can “dilute” the tax down because once the set amount is accumulated, the collection stops. Please vote yes.
School growth can't wait
I, like most, take no pleasure any time property taxes increase. I need to be convinced of the necessity. The 2017 Moses Lake School District’s construction bond proposal is a challenge we’re forced to confront as the result of a growing community. 0ur student enrollment has outgrown its school facilities. Currently our high school’s enrollment is the second-largest in the state with over 2,400 students, in a facility intended to accommodate 1,600. Projections from elementary enrollments indicate continued growth of class sizes. This is not a new dilemma.

The crystal ball
If this community accepts a substandard academic environment for our own children, then we have not learned the lessons from our forefathers, and we should all be ashamed. Our forefathers had the ability to look into and decipher the crystal ball. Without their forward visionary thinking and planning, we would not be here, enjoying the fruits of their wisdom and decision-making.

Portables aren't a solution to school crowding
Students in Moses Lake need a positive learning environment. Conditions at the high school are overcrowded. The current building was designed for 1,600 students is serving about 2,200. To accommodate all these young people, the staggered schedule was introduced. This is not an ideal situation and comes with its own set of problems, including transportation costs and scheduling nightmares. The number of students currently enrolled in our elementary schools will increase high school enrollment by 400 in just five years.
A vote 'no' is not a vote against education
There have been many “voices of reason and common sense” written as letters to the editor giving facts as to why the third school bond is too expensive and makes no sense. One such letter written by Scott Hudson pointed out why high schools are so expensive to build, operate and maintain. Another by Gary Ash cited dollar amounts for an alternative solution. To these and others, we say thank you.
School bond is a worthwhile investment
School ballot: I vote “yes.” Why? The greatest investment you and I can make in our community is in our children.
Make room for student growth
On Feb. 14, the Moses Lake School District is asking voters to approve a $135.3 million construction bond to build a new high school and a new elementary school and upgrade the existing Moses Lake High School. Voters already started receiving their ballots in the mail this week and have a lot to think about.
Public schools are the backbone of America's success
As military brats, my sister and I attended government (U.S. Army) schools in Germany and at Fort Ord, Calif. We also went to public schools in Fayetteville, N.C. Tacoma, Wash., Lakewood, Wash., Monterey, Calif. and Albany, Ga. At each school we gained knowledge. My sister fulfilled her dream by going to business school; I achieved mine by going to university. We both worked and contributed to society.

Trump is America's downfall
So sad to say the land of opportunity is no more since the election of our new president Donald Trump and Republicans that value his racist views. He wants a wall between Mexico and the United States. Why not a wall between Russia and the United States? Wanting Muslims to register: how is this any different from what Hitler did with the Jews? Will we start labeling people by their ethnic race?

Using buildings year round might be an option
For the third time, the school administration and the school board are extensively (and expensively) advertising a bond. Last time, they said that if we did not approve the bond that the school buildings would be used year round to accommodate increased enrollment. Instead, the administration just extended the day at the high school and began immediately to propose another bond.
Bomb threat at Soap Lake High School unfounded
SOAP LAKE — A phoned-in bomb threat at Soap Lake High School Wednesday morning was determined to be unfounded after a thorough search of the building was done.
MLSD bond proposal facts
Recent letters to the Columbia Basin Herald (CBH) present mostly positive feelings toward the proposed Moses Lake School District (MLSD) bond. Growth and overcrowding are key issues. What seems to be missing in the letters and the recent op-ed by Kevin Donovan, board president, are facts and related numbers. When considering Moses Lake High School (MLHS) and the proposed new high school, we are looking at adding 1,600-student capacity and updating MLHS which has a capacity of 1,800. People like to use the original MLHS design capacity of 1,600, but it was expanded to 1,800 in the last remodel (OSPI lists it at 1800). Using the 2020/2021 year as a start and assuming enrollment in grades five through eight stays the same, the district will need space for 2,557 high school students. If the bond passes, MLSD will have a high school capacity of 3,400. This is over 800 more than needed. If two equal high schools are the preferred configuration then each would be at 1,300 with room for 500 growth at MLHS.
It's for the children
My wife and I have lived in Moses Lake for nearly 50 years and have seen our children graduate from MLHS. Most of that time we watched our school’s athletic teams finish near the bottom of the Big Nine. That is except the wrestling team, of course. The last few years our teams have been much more competitive in the conference and at the state level. I would like to see that trend continue. But once again the school district is pushing for a second high school. They want two schools with a capacity for 1,600 students each. Based on current numbers that would make two schools with classification numbers of approximately 957 students, meaning two schools in the 2A classification. At the current fast rate of population growth in Moses Lake it will be approximately 20 years to get each school up to 1,600 students each. The last bond to expand MLHS was passed in 1999 and already needs a $13.8 million upgrade. Guess we will need to upgrade two high schools in another 20 years. Oh well, it’s for the children. Or is it for the school employees? An additional school will need a second set of coaches in all the athletic programs, more cooks, janitors, secretaries, nurses, principals and other highly-paid administrators. Sorry, but I will be voting “no” for the third time for a second high school. I would however vote to make the current MLHS one of the biggest most powerful schools in the state. If this bond fails, give me a chance to vote “yes.”
Cannabis businesses a plus for the community
It is very disappointing and frustrating to see Grant County have such an extreme proposed pull-back on a new economic driver like legal cannabis has had on new jobs and investment in the local area community.
Federal employees must not be silenced
I am outraged at the communications lock-down the President of the United States has placed on the EPA, and the departments of Agriculture and Interior. This is of no benefit and is, in fact, harmful to the American people. Americans have a right to scientific facts that heighten awareness and educate us. Knowledge is the first step to protect human health and the environment. We pay taxes to run these agencies to carry out the mission/services that benefit us all. Public information is a fundamental right.
Reasons to support the school bond
Five reasons why I am supporting the new high school project:
School bond is short-sighted
Regarding the upcoming bond proposal, I am concerned that the needs of our most valuable assets, our children, are not best being served.
Women's march was an important event
During the early part of mid-January, my 20-year-old granddaughter Jessie called me. “G-ma, what are you doing Saturday, Jan. 21?” “Why”?” was my response. “There’s a women’s march in Ephrata and I want you and Joelee to go with me.” (Joelee is her 12-year-old sister.) Of course I said yes and I’m sure glad I did. What a learning experience for me as well as Jessie and Joelee.
