The future of our schools is inn the hands of our community

| February 9, 2017 2:00 AM

Our high school is the second largest in the state and over its intended capacity. We have had to implement a staggered schedule to meet students’ needs now. In elementary, my child’s classroom has over 30 students. Lakeview Elementary and Garden Heights Elementary will have to house their fifth-grade classes in portables at Chief Moses Middle School because they have no more room. Other elementary schools are adding portables to make enough room to house their students next year at a cost to our school district. There is no more room to spare.

As a community, we have not made adequate room for our children to learn because we can’t come together and approve a bond by a super majority of support to build schools. This is our district’s third attempt to solve a mounting overcrowding problem and I am hopeful that our community has taken the time to listen. Our district has done their due diligence to come to the best resolution for space. They have looked at a variety of solutions and evaluated community input. This bond package reaches the majority of voters. Last election, over 50 percent of our community voted yes. Realize our district with input from the community has contemplated a mega-school, ninth grade campus, moving various grade levels and more options. By passing this bond our children will have more success educationally and our teachers will have greater opportunity to meet all the needs of our children in this diverse community.

For our children and community, I am hopeful this passes. My family chooses to vote “yes.” This time I want our children to know their education is worth it. Let’s not let them down. Please vote “yes.”
