Hunter Cruz, a junior from Moses Lake, and J.R. Deglado, a senior from Warden, were recognized as Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) athletes of the week.

Cruz pinned his way to a regional championship at Curtis High School in University Place. Cruz followed that performance by winning a state championship in the 152-pound weight class at Mat Classic XXIX at the Tacoma Dome. Cruz defeated Battle Ground’s Izaiah Duran 2-1 in double overtime for the title.

Delgado kicked off Warden’s district tournament run with 32 points against Granger and 33 points against top-ranked Zillah. Delgado also helped Warden defeat rival Connell, earning the program’s first ever berth in the Class 1A state tournament.

Warden travels to face Lynden Christian at Mount Vernon High School in the regional round on Saturday at noon.
