OTHELLO — The Columbia Basin Health Association held its third Women’s Health Expo at the Nazarene Church of Othello last Thursday.

In honor of Heart Health Month, attendees were encouraged to come wearing red.

Booths were set up offering information on the many services the CBHA provides, some offering demonstrations, such as checking blood pressure, a nutrition questionnaire game and 5-minute massages by Body Kneads Massage Therapy.

The speaker series was kicked off with seven heart health tips which were presented by Othello’s Distinguished Young Women, and Dulcye Field, Chief Operating Officer for the CBHA. Some tips included eating fruits and vegetables, whole grain foods, eating fish twice a week, and cutting back on added sugars.

Next up were tips on how to recognize the signs of a stroke, including noticing a droop to one side of the face with limited mobility, as well as a lack of mobility and control in the arms. Another indication of a stroke is the inability to repeat simple phrases or sentences when asked.

Nutritionist Karlee Kerr was also on hand to give a smoothie demonstration, emphasizing how smoothies can be a terrific way to get your needed daily intake of fruits and vegetables.

Appetizers and giveaways were also a highlight of the evening, as attendees were able to walk around to each booth learning about each of the services offered, putting them in the running to win.
