School bond pros and cons

| February 9, 2017 2:00 AM

We just had our properties reassessed so that is tough. I get it and I know that a lot of people are on fixed incomes and can’t afford the increase. Some of you may be able to apply for a senior exemption. I don’t have children here and never will so I don’t have a personal gain when it comes to my family. But I do care for the children in our community and I care about our community as a whole. This tax would be a burden on property owners in the MLSD area. We have classes that go till 5 p.m. and lunches that start at 9:30 for the kids that start school at 7 or 7:30. MLHS serves a population of over 40,000. We have businesses coming. There are apartments being built. More and more kids are doing online learning which isn’t fair because they don’t get the social aspects of high school. People considering a job here look at our high school and make their moving decisions based on what we currently offer. If we get a new high school we can offer more sports and learning options for students and they may be able to go between the two schools to take specialized classes. This will offer healthy competition between the schools and can keep the kids from traveling to play sports with other schools outside our area. We would have a better chance of attracting more professional people and more shopping. Our property values can increase. This will allow healthy growth for our town; it will create more jobs, construction for the next few years, teaching/administrative jobs. As we grow the additional income can “dilute” the tax down because once the set amount is accumulated, the collection stops. Please vote yes.
