Columbia Basin roundup: Moses Lake boys swim meets goals at state

FEDERAL WAY — Entering the state swim meet, Moses Lake had two goals: to break 100 points and finish in the top 10 as a team.
Both were achieved as the Chiefs totaled 107 points and finished in eighth place.
“We were about 90 percent best times in everything and that's all we can ask for,” head coach Tony St. Onge said.
The 200 freestyle relay was the premier event as Moses Lake and Camas exchanged the best time in Class 4A going in.
However, the Papermakers shaved their time in both prelims and finals to win the event in 1 minute, 26.82 seconds. The Chiefs were about a half a length behind and settled for third place in 1:28.37.
“We just weren't quite there with them and third place is a respectable finish,” St. Onge said.
Kyle Jorgensen, who began swimming as a high school junior, reached the championship finals in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Jorgensen finished sixth in the 100 (48.10) and seventh in the 50 (21.90).
Sophomore Noah Heaps made the consolation final in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle. Freshman Eric Kemper qualified for the consolation final in the 100 butterfly.
Camas won the 4A team title handily with 302 points. Skyline, at 206 points, was a distant second.
Boys basketball
Moses Lake splits district games, reaches state tournament
YAKIMA — Moses Lake blew out West Valley 76-51 in the district semifinals to reach the final 16 of the state tournament for the third time in four seasons.
After suffering a blowout loss the last time in Yakima, the Chiefs clamped down defensively and allowed only one Ram to reach double figures scoring.
“The kids just played super well and they showed up,” head coach John Hohman said. “I believe they frustrated West Valley and it was nice to see.”
The Rams scored just four points in the first quarter and trailed 30-19 at halftime. Moses Lake outscored West Valley in every quarter.
Zach Phillips led the offensive punch with 30 points. Evan McLean and Gio Walker both recorded double-doubles of 20 points-10 rebounds and 11 points-15 rebounds, respectively.
Against Davis, Moses Lake was one quarter away from completing the district championship upset. The Chiefs led 46-42 after three quarters before the Pirates used a late 8-0 run to win 65-58.
“Davis is such a well-coached team and they are tough and they are physical,” Hohman said.
Phillips scored a team-high 16 points; Ryan Karstetter added 14 points and seven rebounds.
Moses Lake is set to play Richland in a loser-out regional game.
Granger 65, Wahluke 41
WAPATO — Wahluke was outscored 32-18 in the second half and lost its loser-out district playoff game to Granger 65-41.
Abraham Olivares led the Warriors with 12 points.
Almira/Coulee-Hartline 58, Odessa-Harrington 44
DEER PARK — Almira/Coulee-Hartline withstood a 30-point game from Odessa-Harrington's Ryan Moffet and won the District 7 1B championship 58-44.
The Warriors led 40-22 at halftime.
Payton Nielsen posted a double-double of 18 points and 25 rebounds for ACH. No. 8 ACH is set to play No. 1 Neah Bay in the regional round of the state tournament.
Girls basketball
Moses Lake 59, Sunnyside 46
SUNNYSIDE — Behind a career-high 28 points from Jamie Loera, Moses Lake beat Sunnyside 59-46 to four-peat as district champions.
Despite the game not affecting state tournament seeding, both teams did not hold back.
“The game doesn't matter, but we've got that league pride,” head coach Matt Strophy said.
The Chiefs were efficient offensively and only committed three turnovers in the first half.
“This was a really solid win for us offensively and defensively,” Strophy said.
Sunnyside's sister duo of Emilee and Ashlee Maldonado was held to 11 combined points.
Alexya Sandmann was the second-leading scorer for the Chiefs with nine points.
“Alexya Sandmann has played really, really well for us down the stretch,” Strophy said.
Abby Rathbun added eight points. and Jessica Olson had six.
Moses Lake received some postseason help as Eastlake stunned top-ranked Bothell 83-65. The loss slid Moses Lake into the No. 2 seed and into a first-round game with Kentridge.
Almira/Coulee-Hartline 51, Republic 38
DEER PARK — Gabi Isaak scored 21 points and Almira/Coulee-Hartline won the District 7 1B championship against Republic 51-38.
The Warriors trailed 28-16 at halftime but rallied for a 35-10 second half.
Both teams will play again in the regional round. Republic is the higher seed.
Men's college basketball
Big Bend 108, Columbia Basin 83
PASCO — Big Bend led by 31 at halftime and routed Columbia Basin 108-83.
The Runnin' Vikes (9-4, 17-9) had five players score in double figures, led by Jacob McCord's 19 points.
Big Bend shot over 50 percent for the game and 50 percent from long range.
Women's college basketball
Big Bend 86, Columbia Basin 74
PASCO — Hailey Garrity, Emily Allan and Madison Wilcox helped Big Bend control the glass and beat Columbia Basin 86-74.
The Vikings (4-9, 12-14) out-rebounded the Hawks 64-41. Garrity, Allan and Wilcox all had 12 rebounds each and all three finished with a double-double.
Wilcox scored a team-high 20 points and Sunnie Martinez added 18.
