Reflections on praying for peace during World War I
In 1917 the First World War, a war with no real reason and no clear goals, raged across Europe for a fourth miserable year. Russia was not only at war with outside forces but also within as the struggle for power in the country caused Nicholas II to abdicate, bringing to an end the monarchy after more than 1,000 years of rule. Lenin and the Bolsheviks seized the opportunity provided by the chaos to start a revolution and by Nov. 8 he was Chairman, the ruler of Russia. Communism was rising.

Congress and senators make the laws so why don’t the laws apply to them? Why should they be any different from the American people? Even Trump and his son and cabinet members being questioned about the Russsia investigation should be held accountable. These are serious allegations and charges. For shame Republicans. We typically think of “peace” as the absence of hatred, war, strife, prejudice and hostility in all of society. That’s a great goal and one we should endeavor to employ in our ever-day lives. Peace is a both an internal condition and an external condition. I can have peace with others but not have peace with myself.

When we attended the Friday night Christmas Parade, we were appalled at the danger to both the float drivers and the crowd. We were presidents of Spring Festival from 1983 through 1988, drove the float and were in charge of the food booths for years. In all of our experience, we have never attended a parade without any crowd control, which allowed the spectators to within 5 feet on both sides of a float under power. There were no police ever visible or any control of any kind.

The true meaning of Christmas
My mom, my wife and my daughter all like Hallmark Channel movies. I wonder about the girls in my life because although these movies are enjoyable, there is nothing new about any of them — you can see every plot development coming a mile away. Especially the Christmas ones — a guy and girl meet, they dislike each other first, then they fall for each other, they have some crisis/argument, they reconcile in time for Christmas. Pretty much every Hallmark movie in a nutshell.
