Basin roundup: Othello wrestling wins Bob Mars Invitational
KENNEWICK — Othello crowned two champions and won the Bob Mars Invitational with 222 points.
Chiawana was a close second with 215 points and Moses Lake rounded out the top three with 210.
Moses Lake’s Jonathan Tanguma (106) placed first, winning by injury default over Wapato’s Uriel Garcia. Cruz Vasquez (152) was Moses Lake’s other champion. Vasquez pinned Othello’s Juan Martinez.
Maximus Zamora (113), Xzavier Villarreal (120) and Bryan Guzman (195) were runners-up. Zamora lost his championship match to Chris Melo of Othello 5-1 and Villarreal fell in a major decision to Quincy’s Tanner Bushman 19-7. Guzman lost to Alejandro Llerenas of Kiona-Benton 9-3.
Othello marched its way to the team title with champions Melo and Jeremy Mendez (132). Mendez pinned Joel Coronel of Zillah. The Huskies also had four runners-up: Roberto Ramirez (138), Martinez, DJ Guzman (220) and Isaiah Perez (285).
Led by Bushman and 220-pound champion Ruben Vargas, Quincy finished fourth as a team. Vargas defeated Othello’s DJ Guzman 5-1. Devon Salcedo (145) and Ray Robinson (182) both finished second.
Ephrata fourth at Davis Invite
YAKIMA — Clay Johns was the 120-pound champion and Ephrata finished fourth at the Davis Invite with 129 points.
West Valley totaled 179.5 points and finished first.
Johns pinned Josh Fernandez of Davis in the second round to finish first. Kelvin Sager (106) and Eli Guevara (285) placed second.
Girls wrestling
Othello third at Lady Jags Kickoff Invitational
PUYALLUP — Othello had one champion and one runner-up at the Lady Jags Kickoff Invitational to finish third.
The Huskies totaled 221 points, behind Federal Way (223) and Rogers (Puyallup) (228).
Elizabeth Giles pinned Monica Canales of Warden in the 145-pound championship match. Emily Mendez (110) finished second.
Boys basketball
Othello loses twice
Othello dropped games to Wapato, 84-41, and Ellensburg, 63-45.
Kyler Villarreal scored 17 points against the Wolves and 22 against the Bulldogs.
Warden starts season 2-0
Warden picked up lopsided wins over Mabton, 69-37, and Highland, 77-40.
Against Mabton, Martin Arriaga scored 14 points and Zach Richins added 11 points to go with five assists. Dreyton Martinez scored a team-high 21 points.
Warden hit 17 three-pointers against Highland. Richins led the Cougars with 20 points and Jesus Mercado scored 11.
“When we move the ball around and share it we’re pretty good,” head coach Wes Richins said.
Ephrata 83, Grandview 54
GRANDVIEW — Jake Oxos scored 36 points — 24 in the second half — and Ephrata ran away from Grandview 83-54.
“Any win on the road in the CWAC is important,” head coach Brandon Evenson said.
Ephrata dished out 26 assists as a team, led by Trenton Kleyn’s 11.
Selah 89, Quincy 40
QUINCY — Quincy could not contain Selah and lost 89-40.
Elijah Pepper and Zak Donato scored 33 points each for the 2017 state runners-up.
Max Molina led the Jacks with 17 points.
Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 59, Asotin 53
ASOTIN — Lind-Ritzville/Sprague held off host Asotin to win its season-opener 59-53.
Bryce Kelly led the Broncos with 22 points.

Girls basketball
Moses Lake 54, Walla Walla 14
WALLA WALLA — Moses Lake allowed seven points through three quarters and beat Walla Walla 54-14.
“Our defense just put the clamps on everything they were trying to do,” head coach Matt Strophy said.
The Chiefs led 26-5 at halftime.
Jamie Loera scored a game-high 17 points. Kiera McPartland and Madisyn Clark added nine and eight points, respectively.
Othello splits games
Othello split two games, losing to Wapato 72-27 and stunning Ellensburg 27-18.
Macy Hampton scored a team-high 14 points against the Wolves.
The Huskies led the Bulldogs 10-5 at halftime and created some breathing room with a 14-point third quarter.
Hampton and Lane Simpson scored seven points each.
Warden drops a pair
Warden fell to Mabton in its season-opener 63-49 and lost a close game on the road to Highland 47-45.
Despite 34 turnovers and poor shooting, Warden kept it close with Highland. However, the Cougars could not overcome shooting seven-of-44 from the field and nine-of-27 from the free throw line.
Bailey Whitney posted a monster double-double of 21 points and 22 rebounds.
Ephrata 62, Grandview 52
GRANDVIEW — Katelyn Ostrowski broke out for 22 points and Ephrata beat Grandview 62-52.
“I thought we played pretty good defense and we were able to wear them down a bit,” head coach Aaron Ross said.
Madison Martin added 19 points and Izzy Buchert scored 14.
Asotin 59, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 47
ASOTIN — Peyton Curtis and Lacey Miller scored 13 points apiece, but Lind-Ritzville/Sprague dropped its game to Asotin 59-47.
Adrienne Washington scored a game-high 23 points to lead Asotin.

Men’s college basketball
Big Bend finishes 1-2 at Bigfoot Classic
Big Bend finished 1-2 at the Bigfoot Classic.
Behind a big day from point guard Koby Huerta, the Runnin’ Vikes won their tournament opener over Kelwona Fire Club 103-86. Huerta scored 34 points and had eight assists.
Huerta also scored 34 points in Big Bend’s loss to Portland 95-90.
In the final game, Big Bend was outscored by 17 points in the second half and lost to Whatcom 106-100. Blake Dittman notched 28 points and eight rebounds.
Women’s college basketball
Big Bend wins big twice
Big Bend beat Olympic 86-44 and Shoreline 114-8.
Sunnie Martinez led the Vikings against Olympic with 22 points and four assists. Callie Gronning added 19 points, five assists and five rebounds.
Big Bend scored 62 bench points in its win over Shoreline. Leah Dougherty scored a game-high 19 points and Moses Lake grad Maggie Strom had 11.
