COEUR d’ALENE, Idaho — Moses Lake moved through the first day of the 36th Tri-State wrestling tournament, the longest continually running invitational tournament in the Northwest, in great shape.

The Chiefs, who were second at one point, finished the day in third place with 109 points, just 31 points behind tournament leader Post Falls, Idaho (140) and seven behind second place Mead (116). Havre, Mont. is fourth at 104 and Flathead, Mont. (95.5) is fifth to round off the top five of the 28-team tournament. Othello is sitting in 13th place with 73 points.

Moses Lake senior Hunter Cruz is making a strong bid to repeat as Tri-State champion, pushing through to the semifinals with four strong matches. The Chiefs captain and defending Washington state champion pinned Julian Fryberg of Lake Stevens at 1:49, then pinned Brotton Needham of Moscow, Idaho, at 1:02 to advance to the semifinals. He opened his final tournament in Coeur d’Alene with a major decision over Gunner Starren of Tahoma (11-2) to the tone.

Beau Mauseth had a sound first day at 182, advancing to the quarterfinals where he pinned Cam Doty of Sentinel (Mont.). Tayven King of Mount Spokane pinned Mauseth in the quarterfinals, but he still has wrestle-back options and a chance to place in the quality field.

Chiefs 106-pounder Maximus Zamora advanced with a tech fall and a 13-7 decision over Chris Melo from Othello. He advanced to the semifinals with his second tech fall of the tournament with a 19-2 win over Buddy Doolin of Libby, Mont.

Moses Lake 195-pounder Damian Vasquez made a nice run right through the middle of the bracket, beating DJ Guzman of Othello 9-1 in the second round. His bid to advance to the semifinals came up a point short in a 4-3 loss to Abe Turpen in the quarterfinals.

Payton Castro pushed his way into the quarters with two pins and a major decision at 220 and kept his championship hopes alive with a major decision over Malachi Areta of Ferris, 12-1.

The Tri-State features the top varsity wrestlers from Idaho, Washington, Montana and Oregon.

Othello heavyweight Isaiah Perez is coming off a tournament championship at the Schutte Invitational and won his first three matches of the day at 285 for the Huskies. Perez advanced to the quarterfinals in the wake of three straight pins, then pinned John Nascimento to advance to the semifinals.

Bernie Garza Jr. had an exceptional first day, advancing to the quarterfinals with three big wins at 170 before dropping a major decision to Coleton Kazmierczak (8-0) of Post Falls, Idaho.

Jonathan Gomez went 2-1 in the championship bracket on Day 1 at 120 pounds for the Huskies, as did Jovani Espindola (126), and Juan Martinez (152).
