Crisp, Dickerson pace Washington past Omaha, 86-73
SEATTLE (AP) — David Crisp scored 24 points and Noah Dickerson added 16 as Washington used a late 18-2 run to pull away from Omaha 86-73 on Sunday.
Omaha (1-8) took a 63-62 lead on Mitch Hahn’s deep 3-pointer from the top with 8:21 left, but Matisse Thybulle answered with three free throws and a layin to trigger the Huskies deciding spurt.
Zach Jackson had 28 points and Mitch Hahn added 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Omaha (1-8).
Jaylen Nowell added 16 points and Thybulle 12 for Washington (6-2), which shot 58 percent in the second half.
After Hahn’s 3-pointer gave Omaha the lead, the Huskies answered with an 8-0 spurt as the Mavericks missed a pair of three-point attempts and then turned it over twice.
Thybulle triggered the run when he was fouled on a three-point attempt and hit all three free throws. On the ensuing possession, Thybulle converted his own block into a layup at the other end. Crisp capped the run with two free throws to make it 70-63 with 6:09 remaining.
After KJ Robinson scored on a floater from the lane, the Huskies ran off 10 more consecutive points, extending the lead to 80-65 on a rebound basket by Sam Timmins with 2:49 left.
Washington extended its 42-39 halftime lead with an 8-2 run, going in front 50-41 on Crisp’s layin, but the Mavericks rallied within 52-49 on a jumper by Lamar Wofford-Humphrey.
Hahn’s 3-pointer gave Omaha its first lead of the second half at 58-57 with 10:11 remaining.
The Mavericks stayed close in the first half behind Jackson’s 17 points, which included three 3-pointers. Omaha also held a 25-16 rebound advantage over the Huskies, who had outrebounded their last two opponents by 17 per game.
Washington opened a 39-34 lead on Hameir Wright’s 3-pointer with 2:12 left in the half, but Jackson brought the Mavericks even with a 3-pointer and layin. Nahziah Carter’s 3-pointer put the Huskies up at the break.
Moneke’s 19 points lead UC Davis past Washington State 81-67
PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — TJ Shorts II scored 20 points, Chima Moneke had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and UC Davis defeated Washington State 81-67 Saturday.
UC Davis (5-2) finished the first half on a 12-2 run for a 17-point lead. Moneke set the tone when he slid the baseline and slammed down a monster dunk. Moneke had another dunk with 9:28 remaining in the second half extending the lead back to 17.
Shorts II sealed the game with a steal and an easy fast-break layup with one minute remaining in the game.
Siler Schneider added 12 points for UC Davis.
Washington State (6-1), which returned home after winning the Wooden Legacy Tournament, went 1-for-7 from 3-point range in the first half, shooting only 35 percent from the field. The Cougars made several runs throughout the second half, trying to make one of their famous early-season comebacks, but fell short.
Robert Franks had 32 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars. Franks went 12 of 18 from the field with five 3-pointers. Flynn, who was the MVP in the California tournament, was cold early, but finished with 19 points and five assists. Flynn entered the game with only four turnovers and 28 assists on the season. Against the Aggies, Flynn committed five.
Freshman Milan Acquaah, who has been a spark at times during the season for the Cougars, had six assists and five turnovers.
Tillie, Norvell lift No. 15 Zags over No. 25 Creighton 91-74
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Killian Tillie scored 22 points and Zach Norvell Jr. added 21 points, all in the second half, as No. 15 Gonzaga came back to beat No. 25 Creighton 91-74 on Friday night.
Silas Melson also scored 21 points and Johnathan Williams added 15 for Gonzaga (7-1).
Marcus Foster had 21 points for Creighton (5-2), which has already beaten No. 20 Northwestern and No. 23 UCLA and lost to No. 22 Baylor this season.
Gonzaga shot better than 62 percent in the second half to erase a 7-point halftime deficit.
Gonzaga went on a 20-4 run to open the second half and built a 57-48 lead. Creighton had five turnovers during the run.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Norvell put Gonzaga up 63-53.
Norvell hit two more 3s to push Gonzaga’s lead to 81-71 with less than 5 minutes left. Gonzaga gradually extended the lead. The Zags outscored the Bluejays 54-30 in the second.
The first half was nip and tuck for most of the 20 minutes. Creighton hit four consecutive 3-pointers late in the first to take a 34-29 lead.
Gonzaga made a run, but the Bluejays scored the last five points to take a 44-37 lead. They shot 58 percent in the first half, including 7 of 14 on 3-pointers, before cooling off in the second. Foster had 15 first-half points for Creighton.
The teams, both from Jesuit universities, have not played since 1977 and this is their first meeting in Spokane.
Gonzaga is 183-17 in the McCarthey Athletic Center since it opened in 2004.
