Quincy wrestlers hold off Selah for a big CWAC win at home

QUINCY — The Quincy wrestling team had key pins from Devon Salcedo (145) and Nate Ramirez (152) to start things off and did just enough to defeat Selah 36-34 in Central Washington Athletic Conference action.
“It was another tight one tonight. The Jackrabbits scored big pins to start the dual and Selah finished strong,” Quincy coach Greg Martinez said. “Even though Oswaldo Perez didn’t get the win, as a sophomore in that position, he wrestled well enough to help get the team the victory.”
Victor Tafoya decisioned Jackson Yates 7-5 to give the Jacks a 15-3 lead early, winning three of the first four matches of the night.
Quincy benefited from a couple of Selah forfeits and Ruben Vargas gave the a 30-3 lead with a 8-1 victory over Amadeo Pimentel in the 220-pound match.
Selah closed out with four consecutive wins, but the Jacks held on for a big win in the CWAC.
Quincy wrestles at the Cashmere Invite on Saturday, then travels to East Valley on Dec. 21 before the holiday break.
Ephrata 40, Wapato 37
WAPATO – Ephrata got big wins from Will Anderson (170), Mac Laird (195) and Efrain Bedolla (285) to lead the Tigers to a big CWAC win Thursday night on the road.
Anderson pinned Mark Cerna at 3:48 to start a string of momentum turning matches for the Tigers. Laird caught Juan Alvarado at 3:03 in the 195-pound match and Bedfolla, who’s been just money at heavyweight, finally caught Eduardo Mendez in the third period with the pin at 4:50.
The Tigers are back on the mat on Saturday at the six-team Cadet Classic in Cheney. They are off until Dec. 27 when they wrestle at the Royal City Tournament.
Othello at Prosser was postponed.
Women’s basketball
Big Bend 64, Fairchild Air Force Base 28
Big Bend’s Emily Allen nearly scored more points by herself than the Fairchild Air Force Base team combined.
Allen was 10-of-16 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range, to lead the Vikings (7-1) to a 64-28 victory over the Air Force team. Sunny Martinez added 11 and Miranda Johnson popped for 10, but it was Allen’s night.
Big Bend outscored Fairchild 20-5 in the first quarter and extended their lead to 39-10 by the intermission to improve to 7-1 and remained tied with Walla Walla atop the NWAC East standings in one of their best starts.
The Vikings host Langara College on Friday, tipoff at 7 p.m., and Portland Community College on Saturday at 3 p.m. to head into the holiday break.
