Prep roundup: Moses Lake's Washburn, Molitor qualify for state

MOSES LAKE — Zack Washburn, Ander Molitor and Moses Lake’s 200 freestyle relay didn’t waste any time qualifying for the state meet in February.

In his first high school meet, Washburn won the 50 freestyle in 22.16 seconds to finish first and qualify for state in that event. Molitor clocked in at 22.26 seconds in the 50 freestyle to finish third and also punch his ticket to state.

The 200 freestyle relay team made up of Molitor, Dylan Bond, Noah Heaps and Washburn finished in 1 minute, 28.88 seconds to place first and qualify for state.

Washburn also won the 50 backstroke and breaststroke.

Moses Lake hosts Walla Walla on Dec. 7.

Girls basketball

Wilson Creek 48, Moses Lake Christian 42

WILSON CREEK — Moses Lake Christian was unable to complete a wild comeback and lost to Wilson Creek 48-42.

The Lions trailed 30-9 at halftime and 46-17 at the end of three quarters.

“It was a totally different team in the second half,” head coach Josh Kast said.

The Devils were limited to two fourth-quarter points as the Lions forced turnovers to whittle down the deficit.

Aspen Merkle, an eight-grader, led Moses Lake Christian with 15 points. Rylee Homesley and Jocelyn Lloyd scored nine and six points, respectively.

Ephrata 52, Cascade 30

LEAVENWORTH — Ephrata built an early double-digit lead and beat Cascade 52-30.

It was the second game in a row Ephrata started quickly.

“It’s a really good sign,” head coach Aaron Ross said. “It’s something we’re focused on.”

Mya Buchert led the Tigers with 14 points.

Boys basketball

Ephrata 69, Cascade 34

LEAVENWORTH — Ephrata led by 25 points at halftime in a 69-34 win at Cascade.

“We did a nice job of deflecting the ball, pushing it and scoring,” head coach Brandon Evenson said.

The Tigers received balanced scoring from Caden Blankenship (14), Josh Benthem (13) and Jake Oxos (12).

Trenton Kleyn added a nice floor game of six points, four assists and no turnovers.

Ephrata travels to Grandview on Saturday.

Girls bowling

Moses Lake 3, West Valley 1

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake recorded its highest pin count of the season en route to a 3-1 victory over West Valley.

Haley Rogers posted consecutive games of 183 pins to lead the Chiefs. Cassidy Nelson added 169 points in Game 1, which Moses Lake won 760-687.

Rogers (183) and Kerisa Sansilo (188) paced Moses Lake in a Game 2 win, 809-772. Jasmine Steele was inserted into the lineup for the second game and scored 160.

The Chiefs won the first Baker game 159-144 and lost the second 156-146.

Moses Lake hosts Eisenhower on Dec. 5.
