There's no place like home in the Columbia Basin
It’s been said home is where the heart is. And there is a real truth to that. I’ve lived in several places throughout the Pacific Northwest in my 60 years on this earth — in big cities and small towns — and for me there’s no place like the rich agricultural region of the Columbia Basin.

No tax money for Planned Parenthood
While attending the listening session hosted by Dan Newhouse last week, it was apparent that the bulk of the crowd did not represent the constituency of our conservative county. One of the issues that concerned the group was the federal funding of Planned Parenthood. The point was made that the funding for Planned Parenthood is not appropriated for abortions in any way. Not true. I can assure you that the funding does facilitate abortions by freeing up other funds for abortion services. Actually it is estimated that funding abortions takes much of the annual Planned Parenthood budget. Planned Parenthood performs 1/3 of a million abortions each year; it’s the largest abortion provider in the nation, and has doubled its share of the abortion market since 2011. Pro-choice groups claim that abortions only make up about 3 percent of their services. That number is very misleading when you consider that a visit to obtain contraceptives would be equal to an abortion in the eyes in those running Planned Parenthood. You and I, directly or indirectly, fund abortions and I do not want to be responsible for facilitating the death of a baby. We have thousands of other federally funded services throughout our nation that can help women with their reproductive needs. Please, Dan Newhouse, do not appropriate one penny of federal money to Planned Parenthood. They already receive most of their funding from other sources, there is no question that the private sector would make up most, if not all, of the difference in lost revenue.

Laws should protect the vulnerable
I’ve always believed police are to protect and serve. As a mother who wishes to protect her disabled daughter who has been taken advantage of, it should be a crime. Laws need to be changed that protect the mentally disabled. Rape is rape, abuse even for an adult. I can’t fight alone. I’m asking people, please contact senators and those in Congress to change the laws to protect those who aren’t able to speak for themselves. We’re the voices that make America great. It’s time for a change. Help the homeless, veterans, education and programs that help the many people looking for a helping hand.

Many of you know about the lettuce shortage currently going on. Wet weather in California has affected the production cycle, causing stores to either be out of lettuce, or have it at a much higher price, even if the quality of what is available has dropped. Newhouse hosts listening session in Moses Lake
MOSES LAKE — Things got testy during a congressional listening session Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Yakima, held in the Moses Lake Civic Center auditorium Tuesday night.
Democracy or theocracy?
Do we live in a democracy or a theocracy? As I consider this question I realize some live in neither, some live in just one and others live in both. In some countries there is one leader all people are subject to. Other countries have a combination of sorts to govern the people. America has a democratic form of government that seems to have shifted from the people to the government in recent years. We still have the freedom of assembly but it seems only the loudest are being heard. The democratic form of government has three separate branches. Each branch should have checks and balances in order that no one branch has all the authority and should work in unity to preserve the integrity of all. It seems like in the past few years the judicial branch has gained authority over the other branches; however, the past two or three years the executive branch exerted its authority over the others.

Listening sessions a step in the right direction
Rep. Dan Newhouse’s three “listening sessions” with constituents this week in Moses Lake, Sunnyside and Yakima attracted many people who wanted to weigh in on the issues. Changes coming with the election of President Donald Trump are on voters’ minds. Some critics say Newhouse took too long to see the voters and attempt to answer their concerns. At any rate, we’re glad the sessions happened and there’s more to come in the Lower Yakima Valley today and in Okanogan County on April 20. It would be interesting to see if similar issues crop up.
