Columbia Basin roundup: Moses Lake completes season sweep of Eastmont

MOSES LAKE — Quintz Whitaker likes to break the regular season down into segments.

So Moses Lake’s even-keeled skipper was not too concerned after the team’s 0-5 start. Moses Lake completed the season sweep of Eastmont on Friday and rose from last to third in the Columbia Basin Big Nine standings.

Starter Cain Valdez went the distance in Game 1 and the Chiefs (3-3, 3-5) beat the Wildcats 3-0. Cody Goodwin, Cameron Duke and Caleb Juarez drove in one run each.

Carter Stout led off the third inning with a double and was moved over to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Williams. Duke laced a RBI single into right field. Kameron Huberdeau later scored on a fielder’s choice.

Valdez was able to work out of jams in the final three innings; Eastmont stranded six total runners over that span.

In the late game, Moses Lake rallied from a 6-4 deficit to win 7-6. Dominic Signorelli swung the big bat with three hits and three RBI.

Jordan Rios logged five innings and was relieved by Austin Valdez. Rios finished with three strikeouts.

Eastmont struck for three runs in the fifth inning before Moses Lake answered with a run in the home half and two more in the sixth.

Moses Lake hosts Davis, 4 p.m., on Tuesday.

East Valley 1-10, Quincy 0-4

YAKIMA — Quincy could not solve East Valley starter Lucas Juarez in the opener and struggled defensively in the late game. The Jacks were swept 1-0 and 10-4.

Chase Oldham batted in the winning run in Game 1. Doug Tobin had eight strikeouts in his duel with Juarez.

The Red Devils broke a 4-4 tie with three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings of the second game.

Quincy (1-9, 1-10) hosts Prosser for a single game, 4:30 p.m., on Tuesday.

Ephrata 11-30, Wapato 0-0

EPHRATA — Ephrata (6-3, 8-3) ran its win streak to three games after a massive sweep of Wapato 11-0 and 30-0.

Steven Louie had a one-hitter with five strikeouts in Game 1.

Ethan Etter had three RBI, Zac Berryman had three, Cole Spencer had four and Parker Ball had five.

Ephrata travels to Selah on Tuesday.

Brewster 3-6, Soap Lake 1-2

BREWSTER — Soap Lake was handed its first two losses of the season at Brewster, 3-1 and 6-2.

Brewster stayed unbeaten in the Central Washington 2B league; Soap Lake (6-2, 6-2) fell to second place.

Soap Lake travels to Manson on Tuesday.

Softball

Ephrata 23-25, Grandview 4-2

GRANDVIEW — Mikayla Wood homered with four RBI in the late game and Ephrata swept Grandview 23-4 and 25-2.

Ephrata (5-3, 5-4) took advantage of 16 errors by Grandview in the first game. Becca Helsley and Wood had three RBI each; Maddie Williams added two RBI.

Kami Shannon drove in five runs in the second game. The Tigers totaled 13 runs in the fourth inning.

Ephrata hosts West Valley (Spokane) in a non-league game, 4:30 p.m., on Thursday.

Ellensburg 18-14, Quincy 0-2

QUINCY — Quincy was swept by first-place Ellensburg 18-0 and 14-2.

The Bulldogs improved to 6-0 and are tied with Selah for first place in the CWAC.

The Jacks (0-4, 0-4) play Prosser at home on April 14.

Boys soccer

East Valley 5, Ephrata 2

YAKIMA — East Valley led 5-0 at halftime and blasted Ephrata 5-2.

Striker Paul Cuevas scored four goals. Arbey Guerrero helped Ephrata (1-2, 4-4-1) avoid a shutout with two second-half goals.

East Valley scored its five goals in about a 20-minute period in the first half.

Ephrata hosts first-place Grandview, 6 p.m., on Tuesday.

Grandview 4, Othello 0

GRANDVIEW — Grandview scored three second-half goals and beat Othello 4-0.

Alex Martinez led the Greyhounds with a pair of goals.

Othello (1-2, 6-3) hosts Selah, 6 p.m., on Tuesday.

Quincy 3, Ellensburg 0

QUINCY — Ignacio Castillo and Kevin Rios hooked up on a pair of scoring chances in Quincy’s 3-0 win over Ellensburg.

Rios assisted on Castillo’s two first-half goals. Miguel Lopez scored in the 29th minute to extend the lead.

Quincy (2-1, 2-7-1) travels to Prosser on Tuesday.

Track and field

Draven Nevarez breaks school, meet record

YAKIMA — Draven Nevarez had a record-setting day at the Davis Invitational.

The senior thrower recorded a mark of 195 feet, 6 inches to win the javelin. The throw shattered the Moses Lake school record of 182 feet, 3 inches and beat the meet record of 191 feet, 7 inches.

The mark also propelled Nevarez to sixth in the nation.

Elly Johnson won the discus with a throw of 122 feet, 9 inches.

Spokane 5-9, Big Bend 2-5

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend dropped a twin bill to Spokane 5-2 and 9-5.

Auggie Francis and Daniel Fornito had one RBI each in the first game. Spokane’s Mitchell Cox homered and drove in two runs.

The Vikings attempted a rally with four runs in the ninth inning of the second game. Lawney Staggs and Nate Ball both went deep. Justin DeHoog of Ephrata also had a RBI.

Big Bend (1-7, 13-9) host a doubleheader against Wenatchee Valley, 1 p.m., on Wednesday.

College softball

Big Bend loses three out of four

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend split a doubleheader with Blue Mountain, winning the first game 2-0 before losing the second 11-3.

Big Bend (5-9, 6-12) was swept by Treasure Valley 6-1 and 13-9.

In the Vikings’ Game 1 victory over the Timberwolves Shayla Baker pitched a complete game shutout. Ember Armstrong plated two runs after her hit to right field was misplayed.

Armstrong and Morgan Goslin homered for Big Bend in the second game against Treasure Valley.
