OLYMPIA — Benjamin and Nicholas Clinesmith spent a week working as pages for the Washiington State Senate at the Capital in Olympia. The brothers were two of 17 students who served as Senate pages for the 11th week of the 2017 legislative session.

The Clinesmith’s were sponsored by 9th Legislative District Sen. Mark Scheosler, R-Ritzville.

“It was great that Benjamin and Nicholas could help with the work we do here in Olympia,” said Schoesler, who is also Senate Majority leader. “I was glad to see Chet and Heather’s boys make the trip.”

The Senate Page Program is an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working in the Legislature. Students are responsible for transporting documents between offices and delivering messages and mail as well. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a mock session.

“It was really fun,” Benjamin said. “You get paid, you get to write a bill and you get to meet a senator.”

“I was really excited to the floor of the Senate chamber,” Nicholas said. “It was really interesting to see what happens there.”

Benjamin enjoys woodworking, ranching, speech and debate and video editing. Nicholas enjoys participating in 4-H, ranching and debate.

Benjamin and Nichols, ages 14 and 16, are the sons of Chet and Heather Clinesmith of Benge, Wash.
