Columbia Basin roundup: Warden runs win streak to six games

WARDEN — Ashlyn Yamane was a combined 6-for-6 in Warden's doubleheader sweep of Royal 25-2 and 8-1.

Warden put up 16 runs in the second inning of Game 1. Yamane scored four runs, Bailey Whitney was 3-for-5 with four RBI and Amanda Contreras hit two doubles.

The Cougars (6-0, 6-2) led 4-1 after the first inning of the late game before tacking on four more runs over the final three innings. Leanne Martinez was 2-for-4.

The Cougars have won six games in a row and are in first place in the South Central Athletic Conference East.


Ephrata 5-0, East Valley 4-19

EPHRATA — Ephrata came from four runs down to beat East Valley in the bottom of the seventh 5-4. East Valley took the second game 19-0.

The Tigers (3-3, 3-3) scored four runs in the sixth inning to tie Game 1 before winning in the seventh. Mikayla Wood pitched a complete game with six strikeouts. Wood, Aliyah Derr and Morgan Williams all scored one run.

The Tigers committed nine errors in Game 2 and fell behind 5-0 after one inning. Wood was 2-for-3. Rebecca Helsley and Brooke Bazaldua had one hit each.


Othello 15-11, Wapato 0-0

WAPATO — Mariah Deleon hit a grand slam in the opener and Othello (4-2, 4-2) cruised to a sweep of Wapato 15-0 and 11-0.

Deleon's grand slam was one of her two home runs in Game 1. Cayleen Garza also went deep. Janissa Garza, Malayah Sauceda and Rilee Heist had two hits each.

Paulina Nunez threw a no-hitter in the second game with eight strikeouts and Ebony Guzman hit a home run. Janissa Garza was 3-for-4.


Baseball

Ellensburg 11-10, Ephrata 1-0

ELLENSBURG — Ephrata struggled on the road and lost to Ellensburg in six innings twice 11-1 and 10-0.

The Tigers (4-3, 5-3) pulled to within two runs during the first game, 3-1, before the Bulldogs' bats took over. Major Moffat homered and Blake Gibson drove in three runs.

Ellensburg scored four runs in the fifth inning of Game 2 to pull away.


Selah 11-29, Quincy 1-2

QUINCY — Quincy had a rough time with 2A state champion Selah and lost 11-1 and 29-2.

Dac Archer had four RBI in Game 1 and Carter Young had five RBI in Game 2.

Quincy (1-4, 1-5) trailed 2-0 after one inning in the late game before Selah plated eight runs in the second, seven in the third and nine in the third.


Warden 2-3, Royal 3-2

WARDEN — Warden split a home doubleheader with Royal, losing the first game 3-2 and winning the second game 3-2.

In the seventh inning of Game 1, the game-tying run was thrown out at home after a single by Kaden Skone. Carlos Reyes had a double and Wade Visker had a triple.

Warden (2-4, 4-5) starter J.R. Delgado pitched 6 1/3 innings in Game 2 before Rodrigo Ozuna came in for the save.

“I thought our pitchers did a great job keeping us in the game,” head coach Dan Caballero said.


Soap Lake 10-34, Bridgeport 0-0

SOAP LAKE — Soap Lake threw a pair of no-hitters, sweeping Bridgeport 10-0 and 34-0.

Isaiah Ewing was 6-for-6 and Brayden Winters had a pair of triples. Winters threw the second game's no-hitter in five innings.


Boys soccer

Wenatchee 7, Moses Lake 1

WENATCHEE — Reigning 4A state champion Wenatchee scored five goals in the second half and beat Moses Lake 7-1.

Moses Lake (0-4, 1-5-1) got a goal on a free kick by Anthony Cortez and missed a penalty kick in the first half to trail 2-1 at intermission. Cortez wrapped a shot around Wenatchee's wall of defenders from 20 yards out.


Selah 2, Quincy 1 (S0)

SELAH — Quincy fell to Selah 2-1 in a shootout.

The Jacks (1-1, 1-7-1) fell behind 1-0 in the 12th minute before a goal by Juan Borja tied the game six minutes later.

“We played good enough to win easily,” head coach Arturo Guerrero said. “We just couldn't score at the end.”


Wahluke 2, Warden 1

MATTAWA — Warden was edged by Wahluke 2-1.

“It was a good game, well fought,” head coach Cameron Black said.

Jaimisen Harris scored the Cougars' (1-2, 2-4) lone goal.


Toppenish 3, Ephrata 2 (S0)

EPHRATA — Ephrata narrowly pulled the upset, but lost to Toppenish 3-2 in a shootout.

Both teams ended regulation and overtime in a 2-2 tie. With the win, Toppenish is the only team in the CWAC with two league wins.

Ephrata (1-1, 3-3-1) is tied with six other times at one win.


Track and field

Moses Lake's Draven Nevarez wins javelin at Clay Lewis

RICHLAND — Draven Nevarez finished first in javelin and Moses Lake boys track and field was sixth a the Clay Lewis Invitational.

Morgan Yamane and Kellie Hellewell was second in high jump and shot put, respectively, to lead the girls' team to third place.

Host Hanford won the boys' and girls' competition.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline's Berlyn Hunt won the javelin with a personal record of 130-05 and won the long jump.

College baseball

Big Bend 1-10, Yakima Valley 4-9

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend earned its first NWAC East win in a split with Yakima Valley.

The visiting Yaks won the first game 4-1 before the Vikings won a Game 2 slugfest 10-9.

Tyson Yamane of Warden got the start in the opener and went seven innings, allowing three runs and striking out two. Seth Reisbeck drove in Big Bend's (1-3, 13-5) only run.

In the late game, Big Bend rallied from a 9-6 deficit with four runs in the ninth inning. Josh Kallstrom of Ephrata homered and had three RBI.


College softball

Big Bend splits against Walla Walla, Columbia Basin

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend settled for splits with Walla Walla and Columbia Basin

Big Bend won the first game against Walla Walla 3-2 before an 8-4 loss in the nightcap. Against Columbia Basin, strong pitching by Shayla Baker led to a 3-0 win in Game 1. The Hawks won the second game 13-8.
