Grant PUD commissioner provides clarification about rate increases
Recently there was a letter to the editor that indicated all PUD commissioners supported the recent increased power rates. My voting record does not support that. In 2012, the commission worked on a new rate resolution which would protect Grant County core power users (residential, commercial, irrigation and small industry) from the impacts of large industrial power users. This would be done by taking Priest Rapids and Wanapum power away from the large industrial users as the core Grant County power users needs grow. This would result in the large industrials getting less of Priest Rapids and Wanapum power. They would need to pay for the extra power they use independently from the core users.

Darwin's curse
I believe that people are genetically programmed to quickly judge and discriminate based on a person's clothes, perceived race or ethnicity, and speech. Over the past perhaps 50,000 years, only those people who made quick judgements were the most likely to survive, and procreate. "Civilization" as we know it today did not exist. Indeed, it might be questioned as to whether mankind is civil today.

After reading this week's article on the rate increase I was inclined to respond.
Immigration
Congress have slacked off and have ignored the situation concerning immigration for many years. They change the rules for immigrants all over the world. To save Moses Lake
Joe Gavinski has stirred up this mess. Move him to Montana and let him "lose" some millions. The City Council built their "castle" and need to be moved out and all of it rented. That should get a large part of the money owed REC coming back in. Explain to REC, Moses Lake needs decent pay back rates "with decent" interest. This is REC's town also and we (the town) need their help. No money or benefits for any council member.
Fishin' Magician: Dave Graybill
I have been keeping a close eye on the Wenatchee River. There are a couple of holes that I like to fish with a bobber and jig, and the river has just been too high the past few weeks. It is settling down, though, and I am going to give it a try very soon. I may even get a chance to float it pulling plugs, which can be deadly this time of year. Either way I will be sure to let you know how it's fishing. I know there are a lot fish in the Wenatchee this year. I have also noticed that the Columbia River below Rock Island Dam has come up a long ways. Grant County PUD is raising the level of the river behind Wanapum Dam as their repairs are being completed. They have it up to minimum levels now and many anglers are eager to get out on the river and try some of the walleye spots that can be productive in the winter. There will be some announcements about the opening of some of the accesses to the river toward the end of the month. I am getting close to getting my next E-Letter done, and if you want to get a copy of my winter forecasts and features go to my web site at FishingMagician.com and click on the E-Letter button. You can sign up for free.

Will Grant County's growth spurt continue?
For the past quarter century, Grant County's population numbers have been on a tear. This pace might be obvious to those who have lived here over these years but will probably surprise newcomers and other Washingtonians. The most recent headcount, taken in April of this year, estimated that nearly 93,000 residents live within the borders of the state's fourth largest county by land mass. As this very first indicator on the Grant County Trends Website illustrates (found at www.grantcountytrends.ewu.edu/graph.cfm?id=1), that count stood at slightly over 52,500 in 1989. (Click on People category to find it.)

Gardener shares poinsettia history and care tips
In the 1820s, President John Quincy Adams appointed Joel Roberts Poinsett the first United States Ambassador to Mexico. During his stay in Mexico he wandered the countryside looking for new plant species. In 1828, he found a beautiful shrub with large red flowers growing next to a road. He took cuttings from the plant and brought them back to his greenhouse in South Carolina. Even though Poinsett had an outstanding career as a United States congressman and as an ambassador, he will always be remembered for introducing the poinsettia, which was later named for him, into the United States. The poinsettia did not start to become popular in the United States until the early 1900s.

Shift focus from Mexican immigrants
Congress focus so much on our borders about immigrants that come to work and have a better future for their families. How about those immigrants that are a threat to our country those that did the nine eleven, isis that been killing American citizens. How about the school teacher killed who screened their background. Where's homeland security know only come in after the facts like the maratahon bombing how did they get through our states. Grain, soy futures easily outperformed livestock & cotton Friday
The grain markets followed soybeans higher Friday. Little fresh news concerning corn emerged Friday, although strong export demand was rumored. Still, grain market bulls were clearly encouraged by the big soybean sale announced this morning. The strong U.S. Employment report was also encouraging, but the fact that it sent the dollar to fresh five-year highs may have limited gains. March corn futures closed up 5.25 cents at $3.95/bushel Friday afternoon, while July gained 5.25 to $4.10.

Minimum wage debate
We are at the 10 dollar minimum wage rate now and more and more states are joining in. I think that if all the 48 states go to a higher minimum wage by an act of government this means that we can all afford a higher grocery bill. I believe the more money I make the more I spend. To be forced to spend more because of act of government raising the minimum wage is not a smart way to go about getting higher wages.

EDITORIAL
What is the Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District, otherwise known as MLIRD?
Fishin' Magician: Dave Graybill
Steelhead fishing on the main stem upper Columbia has taken a turn for the better as water temperatures continue to drop. On a recent outing in Pateros we found the estuary ice-free and just had to run up to the top end to see if we could find a fish. We drifted bobbers along the shore off the points up here and were dodging ice floes. The water temperature here was just 38 degrees, and when it freezes up again it will push the steelhead that have entered the Methow River back out into the Columbia. Fishing will be good below the bridges, where ice doesn't form and bait is allowed. The last three times I have fished the Rocks and the point across from here I have caught fish, and the water temperature was still in the mid-50s. I have had incredible days here in December and January, and am looking forward to what the winter season brings. I am also learning that this is a year for big fish, with many in the 12-pound class being landed and even one that was confirmed at 15 pounds. These are very nice fish for our area.
