Intern to cover capitol for CBH

MOSES LAKE - Washington State University senior Jacob Rummel will provide Columbia Basin Herald readers legislative updates from the state capitol through a partnership with the school's Murrow News Service.

Rummel will be covering the upcoming legislative session with an ear for issues that affect Columbia Basin residents. He completed all necessary courses to earn a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and media production.

He said issues about education and water rights seem to be especially important for this legislative session.

Rummel previously covered WSU's budget and school administration and I-502 implementation (marijuana legalization) at the college's newspaper, The Daily Evergreen.

He said he enjoys covering a beat, like the legislature, because it allows for reporters and sources to get to know each other and fosters positive trusting relationships.

He said one of the reasons he enjoys working as a reporter is to get great quotes from sources that really sum up the news.

In his free time, Rummel, originally from Tacoma, said he enjoys listening to news and comedy podcasts and moonlighting as an aspiring stand-up comic at open mic nights.

He said after college he wants to pursue a career in journalism and is interested in finding out what that will look like in the future.

This is the second year the Herald participated in the internship program with WSU. Former intern Leilani Leach, of Seattle, is an editorial fellow for Student Reporter. She is completing a research project on the use of drones for surveillance or journalistic purposes.
