MATAWA - Government Road, the main street through Mattawa, needs improvements, and city hall is asking citizens to help identify those before seeking the funding.

If you'd like a voice, you may email or stop by city hall to let City Clerk Robin Newcomb know. You may also contact her for additional information.

Mayor Scott Hyndman told the city council, at its Dec. 4 meeting, that the committee's goal will be to design a plan for Government Road. He'd like to see council members, school officials, business owners, city employees and citizens serve.

"In order to apply for funding, it is necessary to have a plan in place," Newcomb said.

In other business before the council, Police Chief John Turley presented outgoing officer Thomas Williams a plaque recognizing his time of service in the MPD.

Williams's last day with the MPD will be this month. He is joining a force elsewhere.

Turley announced that the MPD, Grant County Fire District No. 8 and the Catholic Church are sponsoring a project to donate 16-18 decorated Christmas Trees to shut-ins in and around the community.

About 16 Mattawa children, grades l-6, are volunteering to make the ornaments, place them on the trees and then help police officers and fire fighters make the deliveries.

The council approved an ordinance that will increase the property excise tax by one-fourth of a percent. It is collected when a property is sold.

Newcomb announced that a public comment period will be added to the city council's agenda. Five minutes will be set aside for any resident who has a complaint or compliment for the city.
