MATTAWA - Wahluke's girls started their high school basketball season last Friday on a low note, falling to Warden, 55-37, on Wahluke's home floor.

But coach Brock Anderson took a positive view.

"We lost 55-37, but the score was much closer throughout the game," he said. "Warden had a 9-0 run in the game's last 1:30."

It wasn't as if the Warrior girls didn't play. In her first varsity game ever, Abby Yorgesen led Warriors with seven rebounds

Freshman Jackie Hidalgo had 14 points and four steals. Maripaz Olivarez had 11 points and five steals despite playing only about half the game due to foul trouble.

"It's certainly something we can build on," Anderson said. "It was probably a better team performance than anything from last year. It was fun, and the kids competed."

Anderson said his club had some mental breakdowns at the end of the second quarter that hurt, and a couple key kids were saddled with foul trouble throughout the game.

"We outrebounded Warden and never once outrebounded anyone last year," Anderson said.
