Metal still a top target of thieves

| December 26, 2014 5:00 AM

EPHRATA – Metal theft continues to be a concern, and the Grant County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents how they can help stop these crimes.

According to Sheriff Tom Jones, metal thieves target copper wire, steel scrap and parts from vehicles and farm implements as a source of quick cash. The value of scrap metal has gone so high that it's worth stealing to thieves.

“These people have little regard for the community and are jeopardizing our citizen's safety,” Jones said.

Here's what you can do:

1. Be on the lookout for suspicious activity. If you see someone who appears to be out of place or acting nervously, call 9-1-1. Try to get a good description of the person. If they’re driving a vehicle try to get the license number and a description.

2. Report what you’ve seen. Local law enforcement agencies are already working with recycling businesses to report any suspicious materials dropped off for recycling.

“By working together and watching out for our neighbors, we can all help stop thieves from taking advantage of our communities,” Jones said.

If you have information on a crime, call 509-762-1160, or send information to crimetips@grantcountywa.gov. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
