Fresh News From MarDon

As we approach the last weekend in July 2012 the water level on Potholes Reservoir remains amazingly high!! This ensures our future fishing with tons of baitfish and fry swimming around in the sand dunes and the massive vegetation growth on Potholes Reservoir. Anglers and water sports enthusiasts are finding 75-80F degree water temperatures and a 1,038.8 water elevation, roughly 8 feet low. Many primary channels in the dunes still have 4-10 ft. of water in them. Remember to always use extreme caution when boating in the sand dunes on Potholes Reservoir. Many more sand dunes are completely out of the water and ready for a day in the sand and sun enjoying the water.

Colorado shooting: Cinema's policy hurt customers

There are laws against prostitution, illicit drugs, felons in possession of firearms, illegal aliens in possession of firearms and on and on. All the laws don't stop any of these activities, they only force the persons involved to go to more desperate and dangerous lengths to do as they choose and to ignore the law. The recent tragedy visited by the community of Aurora, Colo. would never have been stopped by the most oppressive and draconian of firearm laws. The immense black market underground will always exist to fill the needs of even the most depraved individuals. Only law abiding citizens obey the law anyway.

Reader asks citizens to focus on real issues

There is so much talk about our candidates. First they wanted proof of Obama's birth certificate, everybody trying to put down our president. He's not a miracle worker to try and fix other presidents before him and their mistakes. Also, if Romney has nothing to hide, why not show your back taxes? All this talk about jobs and money, or who's being taxed. Nobody is satisfied. This is politics: blaming each other and scraping out each candidate's dirty past, making this like Nixon in Watergate. There's be jobs if factories were made here instead of having exported goods. So much needs to be done. All this money wasted on politics could've been used in other ways.

Fresh News From MarDon
July 21, 2012 6:05 a.m.

Fresh News From MarDon

Hot Mid-July weather has warmed up surface water temperatures at Potholes Reservoir to 80F and the water elevation currently sits at 1,040 Ft., roughly 7 feet below full pool. To me this means two things; enjoyable summer swimming on the sand dunes or the Mardon Resort Beach, and especially topwater bass fishing in the evening after work. Even with the gully washing rain from the recent string of thunderstorms, and the sustained damage to farmers from the harsh weather, Potholes Reservoir continues to drop at a rapid pace seeing a 1-2 foot drop per week now. This rapidly creates more beach area here at the resort, exposes more sand dunes, and ramps up the action for bass fishing!

Please vote for Rob McKenna for Governor. The ability to own, and lawfully carry a concealed weapon, is well understood if someone has tried to carjack you, or you called for immediate police help because you witnessed a woman being physically carried toward a waiting car, screaming for help, and the police never came!  A cell phone will not save your life! Any candidate who would have a person being assaulted telephone for police help (and suffer while hoping that it would appear in time to save life and property) does not understand our God given right to protect ourselves, our families, and our country. The next Governor should have demonstrated an understanding and commitment to Section 24 of the Washington State Constitution.  A person who would undermine the State

Reader upset with quality of city water

I believe I wrote you last year about our city water smelling like rotten eggs. This year, it's much worse. I mean it is completely gross smelling. Imagine trying to take a shower, brush your teeth - yuck - or actually trying to drink it. You try to hold your breath but it doesn't do any good. Our animals won't drink the water that is put out for them unless they really have to. We have resorted to bottled water, but that doesn't solve the bathing issue. And our water rates have gone up so much, in fact our water bill alone is twice the amount it was last year.  We actually have to pay for stinky water! And we aren't the only people on the block that have this problem.

If you are a bass fisherman that loves the "topwater" bite, now is the time to fish the Potholes Reservoir. If the term "toilet-flush" means the noise when a jumbo bass explodes on a topwater bait then this summer at Potholes is for you. Now is the time to steal a day from work and get out here on the reservoir and fish the sand dunes for bass or hit the rock-piles on the south end of the lake for smallmouth! Anglers along the face of the dam, and down the Lind Coulee arm are reporting 50 fish days. The Sand Dunes give an angler all the opportunity to catch a 7 lb. Largemouth. The sun has been a blazing this past week so remember to hydrate! Temperatures are planning to stay around the 90's all week.

The Fishin' Magician: Sockeye on the Columbia

Have you been checking the fish counts?  Sockeye numbers are taking off on the Columbia.  The total for one day over Priest Rapids was 24,000!  There are way 460,000 over Bonneville, so the run is going to be even bigger than the forecast.  It could be a half-million, who knows?  I got some below Wanapum Dam last week and I was very impressed with the size of most of the fish.

Jeffrey Lee Essex
July 10, 2012 6 a.m.

Jeffrey Lee Essex

Jeffrey Lee Essex of Moses Lake passed away June 30, 2012 due to a tragic motorcycle accident. Jeffrey was born the youngest of 5 in Sidney, NE on November 12, 1973 to Earle and Judy Essex. The family moved to Moses Lake in 1976. Being the youngest, Jeffrey wasn't about to be left behind and followed his siblings in all they did. He learned to ride a bicycle before he could even pedal by riding on the front of his brother Mark's bike. Mark would pedal and Jeffrey would steer. When he learned how to ride a motorcycle there was no stopping him. As soon as he was old enough, Jeffrey began working at his parents' business (Wesco Overhead Doors) where he was known for being able to install a garage door faster than two men put together. Every morning he came to work he would look at his moms "sonny do" list posted on the refrigerator for him, smile at her and say, "looks like you added a few things". He enjoyed spending time with his daughters, riding motorcycles, spending time in his shop fixing motorcycles, vehicles and numerous projects. Jeff spent a lot of shop time with his brother David and his nephews. His nephews idolized him for the way he rode dirt bikes. He rode motorcycles at the sand dunes and in the Black Rock area every chance he got, paving the way for his followers. He was quick witted, playing jokes and pranks on people. His favorite saying was "oh nice", when things didn't go right, in which his two year old daughter quickly picked up. Jeffrey lived a free spirited life with fast cars and fast motorcycles. He always had a grin from ear to ear and quirky whole hearted laugh. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Ivan C. Reinke

Ivan C. Reinke of Wenatchee, WA passed away at his home on June 21, 2012. Ivan was born June 7, 1946 in Twin Falls, ID to Sigmund and Henrietta Reinke and graduated from Twin Falls Senior High School in 1964. He attended Idaho State University and in 1966 he left college and the family farm to join the U.S. Navy where he worked as an Avionics Tech on A6 Prowlers with the VA196th Squadron aboard the U.S. Ranger. He received an Honorable Discharge and returned home in 1970 where he excelled in all forms of welding, mechanical, electrical, and fabrication. In 1975, he and his family moved to Moses Lake, WA. Ivan became a Ford Certified Technician and earned himself a reputation for being an excellent mechanic. His specialized in diesel and anything that ran on it. Ivan achieved his dream of owning his own business with the opening of Ivan's Repair Shop in 1986.  Later in life, he discovered and greatly enjoyed the hobby of carving and spent a great deal of time learning and perfecting new skills and techniques and more recently taught himself to pan for gold. It was not uncommon to see him covered in mud, wood shavings, or both. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, and enjoyed spending a great deal of time at Bob's Café giving the wait staff a hard time and honoring  them with his vast collection of bad jokes. Ivan was a man of his word as well as a loving father, brother, and son. With his death, he took with him a large piece of our hearts. Ivan is survived by his four children, his brother, sisters, grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Ivan's life will be held July 14 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Twin Falls, ID at 11:00 a.m., graveside services at Sunset Memorial Cemetery immediately after, followed by a light lunch at the church.

Reader asks for justice

For years I have been fighting the system, speaking the truth first for my son, Gabriel Toscano, who since the age of 11 has always been incarcerated. I know my daughter faces criminal charges. When my daughter was raped, the system didn't do much. Others should have been charged. Yes, I too have been charged in Grant County. A police officer hurt me. That's okay because he's an officer who pays doctors by seeing me all the time. I really feel my family has been targeted by Adams and Grant County. Prosecutors make us seem like we're a threat to the community and a danger to officers. Please, is this the only way you have to get rid of my family - by sending us to prison? Juries are used to do the dirty work of our courts. One thinks by using an officer charge, he's telling the truth. I know of others that have struggled with officers and were never charged.

Reader weighs in on immigration issue

I clearly understand our government has a lot of issues concerning our health care and immigration. In our news about the ruling of the Supreme Court and Arizona, I am upset about the president's decision on the immigration issue. They talk about our borders and people coming into our country, concerned about checking people's status. Is this really fair? We have all kinds of immigrants in this country from all over the world. Why are we trying to single out certain immigrants? Is our country trying to go back like Hitler singled out the Jews? A lot of these Mexican immigrants come to work and to get a better opportunity in life for themselves and for their children. There are so many killings in Mexico because of the issues in the Fast and the Furious. Many that are being sent are in danger, as those crossing over. I truly understand the families of those border patrol members that were killed on duty, but what about the Mexicans that were killed? They have rights too. Everyone deserves a chance. I believe if our government and Congress works together and stops pointing fingers blaming our president, a lot could be done. As for the economy, maybe there'd be jobs if we put factories for American products other countries jobs because cheap labor.
