School construction bond sure to come up at meeting

ROYAL CITY - There is still a space need in the Royal School District, and discussion of a construction bond is still on the table.

There will be a meeting of the Royal School District Board of Directors and interested patrons at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17, at the Royal High School library.

"Please join us," Superintendent Rose Search said.

The district is installing the first portable classrooms in district history as the meeting approaches. They will be located at the Red Rock Elementary School and the Royal Middle School.

The two buildings will have space for about 100 students. School officials say that's still not enough to meet space needs.

Search has said she hopes these two portable buildings will be the only ones in the district. She'd rather see all brick-and-mortar buildings.

"Long-term solutions are urgently needed," she said. "We're going to decide (after this meeting) whether we'll run a bond."

The district has been unsuccessful with bond elections in recent years. Voters turned away two efforts last year.

According to Red Rock Assistant Principal Rich Gregoire, the district will have two informational booths staffed by volunteers at SummerFest this weekend. He said there will be plenty to share about building options.

Search announced that the district will have evening student registration again this year. Parents will be able to complete all registration needs (fees, lockers, schedules) before the start of school on August 29.

Royal High School registration will take place from noon to 7 p.m. on August 8-9 at the commons. Royal Middle School registration will occur between noon and 6:30 on the same dates.
