QUINCY - About 200 people attended Quincy's first Relay for Life raising $16,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Quincy Recreation Director Russ Harrington reported on the event during a recent city council meeting. The event is part of a national program to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, which funds research into developing treatments for the disease.

"Everybody was extremely pleased (with the amount of money raised)," he said. "There were about 14 teams there that walked pretty much all night long."

The top fundraiser for the event was Quincy Maintenance Director Dave Reynolds, Harrington said. Reynolds raised $400.

"It was a good event. We're already looking forward to next year," he said. "There was at least a dozen people that I know that walked 20 plus miles over the course of about 14, 16 hours ... There was big and small, everybody we could think of. It was a good time. It was a real good time."

Next year's event is scheduled for June 28 and 29. Harrington is hoping for more teams and a larger turnout.
