Grant County Prosecutor

Reader supports Robert Schiffner

I worked as a Public Defender in Grant County for three years, and currently handle appeals from the District Court. I worked with Robert Schiffner on the defense side; I’ve probably contested 100 cases against Albert Lin as a Prosecutor; I’ve had a couple of cases with Angus Lee. I like all three and work well them. But it is clear that Robert Schiffner would make the best Prosecutor. Schiffner is the only home grown candidate, and committed to the area. He has no ambition to seek higher office or leave for a better job. Schiffner is probably the smartest attorney in the county. He’s worked as a prosecutor, public defender, private attorney, and an appellate attorney. Schiffner is a very thorough attorney. He leaves no stone unturned when he prepares a case. He understands the Grant County legal system from being on both sides, and thus, is best qualified in knowing when to charge a crime, and when to take a case to trial instead of a plea agreement. Because he has experience working in the private sector as an engineer, and costing out projects, Schiffner will find a way to substantially lessen the costs associated with the legal system in Grant County. Mr. Lin has always been fair when I’ve dealt with him as a prosecutor, and is certainly qualified for the job. Schiffner has better and more all around experience. Lee is the young go-getter of the bunch, and I believe 7 years from now, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with. But with only three years experience, and being only 30 years old, I believe he’s not quite there. Not only in legal experience, but in other ways, that only maturity and life experience can teach. For those reasons, I support Schiffner for prosecutor.

Grant County Prosecutor

Reader supports Angus Lee

I just finished reading the letter to the editor regarding the prosecutor’s office.  It would appear the “good old boys” are weighing in just like the Republican Party is trying to block our President’s movements to change the system.  A system that has become too top heavy and unresponsive to the needs of our people.

July 31, 2009 9 p.m.

GRANT COUNTY PROSECUTOR

Reader supports Albert Lin

While serving for eight years as a Grant County commissioner, I had the privilege of getting to know Albert Lin, who is running for Grant County Prosecuting Attorney.  Albert is a sincere, honest professional, who is well respected by people who know him.

TEA PARTY

Reader wants people to attend

If you are concerned about the direction our country is headed, the time to stand up and be heard is now! Our Congress and President have decided we should be a socialist country and every day our government spends money they don’t have in addition to taking over more private businesses. The speed at which this country is changing is unprecedented! In order to stop this tyranny and restore our republic and liberty, the citizens must speak up now. There are plans in the making that will destroy our health care system at a cost of trillions of additional dollars. If you would like to do your part to stop this madness, come join us at the Grant County Independence Day Tea Party, Wednesday, July 1, 4:30-7:00 at the corner of 5th and Pioneer. R-71

Reader wants to sign petition

Where is the petition for R-71? I want to sign it, please! I think everyone else should sign it proudly too. This goes way beyond the issue of gay rights now with me. This is nothing more than a bully tactic to intimidate voters from expressing their feelings through signing a petition. Enough!

July 31, 2009 9 p.m.

HEALTH CARE

Reader believes in a single-payer system

A single-payer system for health care is the only way we can all have care because it will cut out profits going to insurance companies and drug corporations, it will cut out repetitious record keeping, and this will provide the money to pay for the system.

GRANT COUNTY PROSECUTOR

Reader excited for change in Grant County

Yea! Finally, we in Grant County have several people in the race for county prosecutor. I feel a need to finally tell what I learned when our daughter was in law school. She was raised in the Moses Lake school system and received her AA from Big Bend. I thought it would be right and good if she returned to Grant County when she got her law degree. She had other thoughts. She repeatedly told us that she would work anywhere but Grant County. The reason being is that the law professors used Grant County as a lesson for what not to do. The legal system in Grant County was used as a joke. She was also warned about the “good old boy club” that was in the county. No, she did not want to have anything to do with having Grant County on her resume.

TEA PARTY

Reader gives reason to take part

My father, Sydney W. Bennett was killed in World War II on April, 19, 1945, in Italy. I was able to travel and see his grave. I stood where he encountered a German sniper’s bullet. He fell far away from home and his three children, in a place of great beauty where no birds sang. I stood where he died and watched birds fly over the valley and sing again. He died so that place could be as it was the day I found it 50 years later.

Our Grant County prosecuting attorney needs to be one who has experience in superior, district and juvenile courts, as an attorney carrying out justice for all of us. Albert Lin became a deputy prosecutor 10 years ago this September, is in the felony division, and has successfully prosecuted violent offenders. Albert has also handled many other crimes, including fraudulent document cases; he is a zealot for victims’ rights.

MOSES LAKE SIGN ORDINANCE

Reader opposes city council's efforts

After reading the paper and what appears to be a blatant disregard for what the people are saying they want (no ordinance) and what the City Council seems to intend to do (pass the ordinance regardless of what the people say they want) I hope that everyone writes to the Council and tells them exactly how they feel about the Council doing the opposite of what those who elected them want.  After reviewing this article with my children even my 7 year old daughter pointed out that what appears to be  transpiring is not right and summed it up with “that’s not fair, the people elected them.” The fact that someone represents that 144 people would sign a petition in favor of the sign ordinance does not outweigh a petition that is actually signed by individuals who do not want the sign ordinance.

July 31, 2009 9 p.m.

Grant County Prosecutor

Reader supports Angus Lee

I’m writing to support our present Prosecuting Attorney, D. Angus Lee. He has been in office since January, when he was unanimously appointed by the Grant County Commissioners. With his great knowledge of law and technology, he has started the process of implementing a new case management system that will save the county thousands of dollars and increase efficiency in the Prosecutor’s Office. He has cut wasteful spending and reorganized the office, resulting in a 30 percent increase in the number of deputy prosecutors fighting crime, while at the same time being $130,000 under budget after only the first trimester. During this recession, everyone’s budget has been cut but Angus has actually made things better at the same time.

EDUCATION FUNDING

Reader seeks advocates

The 2009 Legislature dealt with our state’s fiscal crisis in a way that sought to avoid lasting harm to public higher education.  However, deep budget cuts and steep tuition increases have led some to speculate we have crossed an important divide.

WASHINGTON

Reader thinks state deteriorating

After being born and raised in a conservative-postured Washington State; I returned in 2005 to find liberal progressive San Francisco/ Sierra Club politics and morals running rampant. I have since corrected a big mistake through action, and moved back to Tennessee. What a relief: no more ridiculously high property taxes and increases just to cover a never-ending illegal alien influx or services that no one really wants. Christmas is still celebrated as a Christian Holiday period. Naked bicycling is never permitted, and homosexuality is still immoral period. The worst thing I found was that nobody, and I mean nobody really gave a damn; just went along with the overthrow of a once respected State which is now a laughing stock that is storied in the national news almost daily. Good luck to the very few conservative (and I don’t mean Republican or Democrat, just Conservative) minded. Hopefully common sense will return, but I fear the State is going, going … yup, gone.

MOSES LAKE CITY COUNCIL

Reader ponders candidates with same name

An interesting development has come about in the race for city council positions in Moses Lake.  In reading the names, there are two Liebrecht’s listed; one male and one female candidate.  Since I do not know either of these people, a little research was necessary.  Well, guess what? We have a husband and wife both running for a seat on the council.  Has a precedence been set regarding this situation?  There are at least two ways of looking at this … one being that this is very commendable for a husband and wife both wishing to “give back” to our fair city.  The other thought is one that came to my mind, especially since this is so rare, that there might be an “agenda.” I would greatly appreciate being enlightened on this.

Clinton Carlton Baesman

July 17, 1933 to July 2, 2009

Your short time on this planet lasted just 76 years. In that time spent, you were born to Lena and Arthur Baesman in the Land O Lakes, Dayton, Minnesota. (Love those Vikes!) Together with your siblings, Russell, Arthur, Gale, Morris, (Morris still hangin’ with us) Delores and Myrtle, you all moved to the west side of Washington. Growing up, and then finally growing out, you decided to join the military, proud to serve you country as a paratrooper in the Army airborne. As a staff sergeant, you were honorably discharged after your tour in the Korean War. Fresh off the boat with a $100 bucks in your pocket, your life changed forever, you met Mom!
