Why pay for internet we can't have?
I reside outside the city limits of Ephrata. As of right now I am just a few roads from the High Speed Network (HSN). The internet we have in this area is sub-par to the other 70 percent of Grant County. I have found out from a person working there that all residents who have Grant County PUD pay for the maintenance of the system, even the 30 percent who don’t have access to the HSN. I do understand that if it is offered and not wanted, they should pay for the upkeep but not the ones that can’t have HSN. I have read the Outreach Update from the PUD, but seems to always need more data. I know there was a survey out there, I did take it. But I am sure not all 30 percent of the non-HSN customers knew about it. I only found out when I wrote the PUD complaining about HSN not available in my area and after what internet I have took 45 minutes to watch a 15-minute video.

Moses Lake business loses 3 RVs in late-night fire
MOSES LAKE — A Moses Lake recreational vehicle business lost three RVs in a late night fire Thursday night. It was the second fire that day in the same location. Michelle Perdue, vice president of I-90 RV, said the company did not have an estimate of damage as of Friday afternoon. All three RVs lost were used vehicles, she said. The fire at I-90 RV was reported about 11:16 p.m., said Derek Beach, fire marshal for the city of Moses Lake. The first fire was reported about 1:35 p.m., in a grass field just off the shoulder of SR 17. “It’s under investigation,” Beach said of the cause of the late-night fire. Fire investigators are still looking at the cause of the afternoon fire as well, he said. The afternoon fire apparently started at SR 17, burning across a field of dry cheatgrass and damaging a building, Beach said. Firefighters were battling wind as well as the dry conditions. “We probably dumped close to 30,000 to 40,000 gallons of water on it.” Firefighters were on the scene about two hours. The fire moved fast, Perdue said. She first spotted it when it was close to the road, went inside to call 911, she said, and by the time the call was complete the fire had almost reached the building. Perdue credited Alan Mathier, owner of Moses Lake Towing, with help at a critical moment in the firefight. “He came over with a big tractor and pretty much saved our building,” she said. Mathier plowed a fire line around the building, which helped keep the fire from spreading. Mathier said small business owners need to help each other. “Just a neighbor thing,” he said. The late-night fire originally was reported as a structure fire, but turned out to be the three RVs, Beach said. The Moses Lake Fire Department was assisted by Grant County Fire District No. 5 when responding to both fires. August arrived with an extended dry and hot spell, and while temperatures have cooled it’s still dry. “We’re in a tinderbox,” Beach said. There are, of course, rules for extremely dry conditions, starting with a countywide ban on open fires. Smokers should dispose of cigarettes with caution. But it’s not just the obvious possibilities for starting a fire. In very dry conditions an overheated exhaust system on a car or a spark from a lawn mower blade hitting a rock can start a fire. “People just need to be aware,” Beach said.

Blethen's letter right on the money
I had to laugh when I read Harold Hochstatter’s letter to the editor criticizing Vaughn Blethen. In the process of attacking Blethen for trying to be a “censor,” Hochstatter makes it clear that he doesn’t think Blethen’s opinions have any place in the CBH. So is censorship only bad when it comes from liberals? And were Blethen’s first two suggestions – that the column be moved out of “news” and placed with other advice columns or other religious columns – really censorship? I think she has a valid point.
Don't get rid of Russian olive trees
For decades, the Soil Conservation Service sold Russian olive trees for windbreaks and wildlife habitat in the Columbia Basin. They will grow in alkaline soil and are drought-tolerant and therefore well adapted to our area. The Washington Ornithological Society has identified 92 species of birds that utilize Russian olives in the Columbia Basin. While some of those are merely using them to roost and any tree would do, many of those species are dependent on their fruit for a food source. Besides birds using them for a habitat, many animals depend on these trees: deer browse and seek shade and shelter in the Russian olive thickets, beavers cut material for dams and pygmy rabbits eat the fruits. The thorny thickets are a favorite hiding spot for Bre’r Rabbit.

Also, if you and I measured out a cup of flour, we'd likely have two different amounts, even if our measuring cup was precisely full.
