MOSES LAKE — Another Columbia Basin business is offering the community a way to help the wife of a Grant County Sheriff’s Office deputy who was accidentally shot by her husband earlier this month.

Both Pizza Hut locations in Moses Lake, 715 S. Pioneer Way and 1035 N. Stratford Rd., are offering 10 percent off meal purchases tonight from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to help cover some of the medical costs for Sydney Rivera, who was shot by her husband, Jose Rivera, in early August. The couple told investigators the shooting was accidental. People wanting to donate are encouraged to tell Pizza Hut staff they want to help the Rivera family, print the flyer found at s3.amazonaws.com/nixle/uploads/pub_media/user25425-1503878513-media1 and give it to staff.

“This is a very generous offer by our friends at the Moses Lake Pizza Huts,” Sheriff Tom Jones said. “It’s also another example of the strong support from the community and great path for giving for those who want to help the Rivera family.”

Sydney Rivera was struck by a bullet at her Moses Lake home Aug. 9. Police officials previously stated Jose was handling a gun when it discharged and a bullet struck Sydney in the arm and chest. Sydney was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment and surgeries.

An update on Sydney’s progress posted on a GoFundMe page for the Rivera family shows she underwent a successful open heart surgery to remove the bullet from her heart and surgeries to repair her arm and lung. Jose, who has been a patrol deputy since January 2016, has been on paid administrative leave as the Columbia Basin Investigative Team investigates the shooting, which both Jose and Sydney have stated was accidental.

Marina Romary, who used to serve gyros and Greek salads at the Grant County Fair, teamed up with Ephrata Pita Pit franchisee Pam Leseman on Sunday in Ephrata for a fundraiser to benefit the Rivera family.
