QVHS to step back in time this weekend

QUINCY — The Quincy Valley Historical Museum will be a time warp this weekend, taking folks back to the founding of the country. “Every other year we do a harvest festival, a celebration of harvest and culture,” said Harriet Weber, executive director of the Quincy Valley Historical Society. “This year we expanded it to three days for America 250.” On Friday evening the museum will host “An Evening with George and John,” with actors portraying George Washington and John Hancock.

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Mavericks (1-5) earned a much-needed win Tuesday as they defeated the Selah Vikings 2-0 at Lions Field. For Head Coach Alysha Overland, this moment wasn’t a matter of if, but when. “We definitely needed it; we were due for one,” Overland said. “We've been putting in a lot of hard work, even in the games we've been putting in hard work. Just haven't gotten the results. This one feels good. Feels like we're hopefully turning the corner now and putting the work that we're putting into practice into the game.” The Mavericks got on the board early, finding the back of the net within the first five minutes of the game. From there, they kept up the pressure in the attack, missing a couple shots on goal while preventing Selah from creating pressure of their own.

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Police Department waved a regretful goodbye to Cpl. Ray Lopez Wednesday. “He’s a great ambassador for this organization in the community,” said MLPD Chief David Sands. “He’s all in for Moses Lake.” “Ray is Moses Lake,” said MLPD Public Information Officer Capt. Mike Williams. “He grew up here, he knows everyone and he is absolutely passionate about the community.” Lopez retired Wednesday after a career that spanned 40 years, first in the U.S. Army and then at Connell Police Department and the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office before coming home to Moses Lake in 2001, according to an announcement from the MLPD.

Knights fall in five-set match against Naches Valley

ROYAL CITY — The Royal Knights volleyball team (0-6) had a tough battle at home against Naches Valley Tuesday night as they fell 3-2 in the five-set game. "The first two sets were definitely rough," said Knights senior Graycie Kast. "We didn't have a lot of energy starting off, but that third set, we got our energy back and just started having fun and the game just came to us." The Knights fell behind early in the first set as they struggled to score, giving Naches Valley an advantage. Royal began to find momentum as the set went on to cut into the deficit, but Naches Valley remained dominant on the court to win 25-12.

Knights win in overtime shootout against Naches

ROYAL CITY — The Royal Knights girls soccer team (6-0-1) had a tight game against Naches Valley (5-1-1) Tuesday evening that came down to a penalty kick shootout that the Knights won 6-5. Though the game was ruled as a tie in official standings, winning the PKs brought excitement for the team. "We played hard and we never gave up," said Knights junior Sarah Bergeson who shot the final PK. "We're proud of us." The game was a defensive battle from the beginning with Naches making an early shot on goal that was stopped by Knights freshman goalkeeper Areli Romero. Following this, Royal gained possession of the ball and proceeded to apply pressure on the opposing goal for a majority of the half.

While angry and frustrated, I am also deeply disappointed in the individual(s) who are violating my right to free speech. After obtaining a permit at City Hall, my husband and I have spent enthusiastic but tiring hot hours placing campaign signs. As of Aug. 25, 10 had been removed. One sign had the wood frame to which it was attached broken in two. The First Amendment of the Bill of Rights regards written text as an aspect of free speech. RCW 29A.84.040 states that anyone who removes or defaces lawfully placed political advertising (such as yard signs or billboards) without authorization is guilty of a misdemeanor. Candidates will attest that signs and advertising are not cheap. It would be nice to have the signs returned, but I don’t expect that to happen in today’s political climate.

LETTER: Why not rebuild the Hansen Road overpass better than before?

I have asked officials from the city of Moses Lake and the Washington State Department of Transportation a straightforward question about the Hansen Road overpass replacement: Why is the new overpass being built to the same dimensions as the bridge designed and constructed in the mid-1950s? Based on the drawings available online, the proposed overpass appears to be narrower than the city’s four other crossings. This matters because cyclists may have only about 18 inches of clearance when two semi-trucks pass each other on the overpass, creating an unsafe and intimidating situation.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since he was injured in the team's season opener. Coach Mike Macdonald said Darnold would not take every rep in practice but he’d be ramped up as the week goes on. Darnold suffered a glute injury on the first series against the New England Patriots. What Ephrata residents should know about the city’s new sign rules

EPHRATA — More than a month after the Ephrata City Council unanimously approved an updated sign ordinance, city officials are encouraging residents, businesses and political campaigns to familiarize themselves with the new rules governing temporary signs. The ordinance, approved Aug. 19, updates the city's sign code and is intended to improve safety, reduce clutter and provide clearer guidance on where temporary signs may be placed. “This just gives a better, a cleaner way of showing what and where you can put the temporary signs,” Community Development Director Ron Sell said. “It's kind of more of a cleanup of where the signs can go because we were starting to get a lot of signs just all over.”

John Burt Vrieling, 100, of Sequim, Washington, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sept. 3, 2026, just a little more than a month before his 101st birthday. John was born Oct. 11, 1925, in Everett, Washington, to Gerrit and Jennie Vrieling. He was one of eight children. Three of his siblings, Janet Lenssen, Lori Hunt, and Gerry Vrieling, survive him. At just 17 years old, John enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, serving his country for three years. It was an early example of the independence and determination that would characterize him throughout his long life.

Byron James Fitch passed from his mortal body at the age of 84 into Heaven on Oct. 20, 2025. Byron dedicated his life to caring for the earth, spending 35 years working for the USDA Soil Conservation Service. Following this, he served as a Chemigation Specialist for the Washington State Department of Agriculture for 15 years, retiring in 2011. His love of nature and stewardship of the land was evident not only in his career but also in his personal interests. Byron enjoyed camping throughout the Pacific Northwest and took great pride in maintaining his property on Moscow Mountain in Idaho.

EPHRATA— The Ephrata Tigers had a successful day at the Apple Ridge Run Invite Saturday as the boys took third overall, while the girls took first out of 20 schools that competed. Tigers Head Coach Lyndsy Roberts said he was very proud of the way his athletes performed in the early season meet. "Our girls showed up and competed," said Roberts. "They didn't back down from the competition and proved they are going to be a team to watch this year. Winning this meet was a big step for the program." The Apple Ridge meet had a unique scoring format with three different race courses with two athletes scoring on each course, Roberts said. This gives a total of six scoring athletes rather than the traditional five.

Chris W. Anderson, 77, of Quincy, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026, at the Quincy Valley Cemetery. Chris was born on April 20, 1949, in Alamosa, Colorado to Ray and Della (Martin) Anderson. The family moved to Quincy when Chris was 3 years old and has lived here ever since. Chris graduated from Quincy High School in 1967 and, two years later, started his service in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He completed basic training in 1969 and was stationed in Japan as a military police officer. He received his honorable discharge in February of 1971.

EPHRATA — Grant County voters will be asked for their opinions on a possible one-tenth of one percent increase in the sales and use tax to fund additional mental health services - but they're not being asked to approve an increase. The request, which is called an advisory vote, will be on the November general election ballot. Grant County Administrator Tom Gaines emphasized the vote is advisory only and won't actually impose the tax. Whether or not it's implemented will be up to the Grant County Commissioners.

Mid-century Moses Lake: A Decade of Transformation

Moses Lake has a certain look. A short trip through our downtown business district and older, established neighborhoods reveals a great deal about the history of this place; the history is in the landscape, and mid-century architecture helps to tell our story. Between 1950 and 1960, the population of Moses Lake grew 322 percent. To call those years a boom time is an understatement. The reason for such massive, explosive growth was the Columbia Basin Project, perhaps the most audacious public works project ever attempted. Water from the Project activated the rich soil in our region and changed Moses Lake forever. The Project, put on hold during World War II, resumed full speed after the Allied victory. Test farms, new neighborhoods, and opportunities sprouted alongside potatoes and sugar beets. A May 1947 ad in the Herald proudly announced the completion of the first of 25 new homes in Knolls Vista. The ad invited the public to an open house to inspect the “homey, two-bedroom residence with garage attached and a full basement,” and announced the imminent completion of 24 other houses and the sale of 82 lots. Knolls Vista developers could see the future on the horizon.

2026 Mudfest creates excitement at the dunes

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Sand Scorpions 2026 Extreme Mudfest brought by Experience Powersports brought locals and visitors alike to experience an afternoon of excitement at the Mud Flats and Sand Dunes over the weekend. "It was epic," said Brandon Douglass, President of the Sand Scorpions. "All the work was worth it." Grant County Fire District 3 releases updated strategic plan

QUINCY — As Grant County Fire District 3 grows, the need for services grows. That being the case, GCFD 3 officials prepared and released a new strategic plan to map out how they are going to meet those needs. Chief David Durfee said the district officials will be reviewing it every year to see if they're heading in the preferred direction, or if circumstances have changed and the direction needs to change. "We're going to work to those goals over time," said GCFD 3 Commission Chair Randy Zolman.

Diesel prices hit record high in Washington as gasoline remains relatively stable

MOSES LAKE — Diesel prices in Washington reached a record high over the weekend, even as gasoline prices remained largely unchanged, according to AAA data released Monday. The average price of diesel in Washington climbed to $7.43 per gallon Sept. 21, up 21 cents a week ago and more than $1.12 higher than a month ago. AAA reported diesel reached an all-time state record of $7.45 per gallon on Sept. 20. By comparison, the average price of regular gasoline in Washington was $5.57 per gallon Monday, just 1 cent higher than a week ago. However, regular gasoline prices remain 32 cents above a month ago and 95 cents higher than a year ago.

Virginia Mary Medrano Woolever passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family Sept. 1, 2026. She was a beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and aunt whom we will miss deeply. Virginia was born April 14, 1951, in Yakima, Washington to Robert and Mary Medrano. In 1959, Virginia and family moved to Moses Lake where she lived until her passing. She attended school in Moses Lake, graduating in 1970. Shortly thereafter she started working at Pronto, which eventually became Nestle, until retirement. Growing up, Virginia was a quiet child who preferred to stay close to home. As a teenager she liked to go to places like “the movies,” but lo and behold when the movie ended there was no Virginia to be found, even after her mom drove round and round the block. No one could look her mom straight in the eye and lie like Virginia; well, that was until Wendy came along.

Public's help sought in investigation of possible drive-by shooting near Othello

OTHELLO — Adams County Sheriff's deputies are looking for the public's help in identifying people involved in a suspected drive-by shooting west of Othello Saturday night. Adams County Sheriff Dale Wagner said in a separate interview that a shooting was reported at 11:08 p.m. in the 2100 block of West April Street, about a mile west of Othello. "Upon arrival, deputies located a parked vehicle that appeared to have been struck by gunfire," Wagner wrote in a media release. "No injuries have been reported or are known to have occurred as a result of the incident."

Wilson Creek prepares for Harvest Festival Oct. 3

WILSON CREEK — It’s a big festival for one of the smallest towns in Grant County. “The town was full,” said Shirley Billings, a member of the informal committee that puts the Wilson Creek Harvest Festival together. “There was no parking anywhere.” The 2025 festival brought 200-300 people out to downtown Wilson Creek, Billings said. Wilson Creek’s population is about 200, according to the U.S. Census. This year’s festival, which happens Oct. 3, is an all-day affair, according to the schedule put out by the committee. The day will begin with a biscuits-and-gravy breakfast at 7 a.m., followed by a fun run at 8 a.m. that starts and ends at Town Hall. The term “fun run” isn’t exactly accurate, Billings said.

Cougars volleyball bests Highland and prepares for league play

WARDEN — The Warden Cougars volleyball team (3-0) claimed a dominant 3-0 victory over the Highland Scotties Thursday evening. After another nonconference victory, the Cougars set their sights toward the start of league play. “It’s been a busy week for our girls because a lot of them are showing at the Othello Fair,” said Cougars head coach Katie Roylance. “I was proud of the way they were able to focus in mentally.” In the first set, the Cougars led 6-2 early on over Highland, but the Scotties caught up midway through the set to keep the score close. Soon after, Warden began capitalizing on offensive openings to stack up back-to-back points and claimed the first set 25-14.

Rotarians step up to clean highway

MOSES LAKE — The Rotary Club of Moses Lake spent some time Wednesday making the roadside look better. “We’re just trying to make the community look better, more attractive,” said club President Sean Jenks. “The city was asking for volunteers to come help around town, and we thought it would be a great opportunity to jump in and take part in that.” About 25 volunteers and a few workers from the city of Moses Lake were on the south side of SR 17 at the Stratford Road interchange Wednesday morning, picking up trash in the tall grass. The group planned to spend about two hours on the project, Jenks said.

Huskies fall short at home to the Vikings

OTHELLO — The Othello Huskies (1-2) lost a hard-fought battle to the Selah Vikings 33-18 Thursday. Though the effort was there, the Huskies might've beat themselves, head coach Jerome Learman said. A few months ago, my colleague's mom was invited to invest in a crypto exchange by members of her church family. Surrounded by friends who said they were watching their own money grow, she said yes. A few months later, she had lost everything. Since January, the Better Business Bureau’s Scam Tracker has logged more than $1.1 million in reported losses from a crypto scheme operating as BG Wealth and DSJEX. The danger in that scheme lies in who delivers the pitch. The invitation comes from a sister, a son, a fellow church member, or a community leader. And they all seem to be getting rich. The offer sounds simple. Open an account, deposit money into a crypto-linked wallet, and then enter trading codes shared by a “professor” and their assistant twice a day. MOSES LAKE — The weather is a little cooler than a month ago, but that didn’t stop a good-sized crowd from coming downtown for National Night Out Tuesday. “(The people who came out) got to see the weather just like we did, and I’m sure they were like, really?” said Moses Lake Police Chief David Sands. “But they came out, so we’re very appreciative.” National Night Out is held nationwide on or around the first Tuesday of August, but this year the smoke from wildfires across eastern Washington made it less than fun to be outside, so the Moses Lake, Quincy and Ephrata police departments all postponed their events. The turnout was a little thinner than in previous years, Sands said; in addition to the fall weather, school had started, and many families had after-school activities.

QUINCY — A public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 6 for the Quincy City Council to ask the public's opinion on a proposal to regulate kratom sales in Quincy. The vote was 5-0; it was approved without discussion. Council members Andrew Royer and Dylan Kling did not attend the meeting.

MOSES LAKE — Washington home buyers had more to choose from this year, according to data released by the Northwest Multiple Listing Service, which tracks real estate trends in 27 of Washington’s 39 counties. Active listings in Washington increased 22% between August 2025 and August 2026, according to the NWMLS data. The growth during that time was much less in the Basin; Grant County active listings rose 10.98% and only 7.1% in Adams County. Compared to July 2026, August active listings held fairly steady in Grant County, rising 2.44%. Adams County active listings rose from 49 in July to 58 in August.

MOSES LAKE — As pickleball continues to grow in popularity across the country, a group of Moses Lake residents are working to increase the sport's presence locally. Most recently, Moses Lake Pickleball Club board members spearheaded a project that brought new nets to McCosh Park. "Our goal and our direction is, grow the club, get to where we have insurance, have club times, and then actually start hosting some tournaments here locally," Morris said.

Horizon employees give back to community

MOSES LAKE — The team at Horizon Credit Union took some time away from the office Tuesday to tackle a different line of work. “We’ve been doing this for about 10 years,” said Branch Manager Anthony Morris. “We close our branch down at noon and then we spend about four or five hours donating our time to the community.” The effort was part of Horizon’s “Go. Give. Grow.” event, in which all branches closed for half a day so employees could volunteer at a local nonprofit. Eight Moses Lake branch employees spent their afternoon at the Moses Lake Food Bank, sorting and packaging fresh produce. “We just got done bagging plums, cherries, peaches, tomatoes,” said Pieper Hansen, who was sealing bananas in plastic with coworkers Mary Garza and Rachel Buckle.

Eagles fall at home to Odessa

SOAP LAKE — The Soap Lake Eagles volleyball team (1-4) fell to Odessa (3-1) Wednesday evening. Though the Eagles lost in three sets, the closeness of each set showed the young squad a lot about where they need to improve moving further into their season, head coach Erin Fletcher said. “I felt like we beat ourselves,” said Fletcher. “We have come so far, I think it was a really good matchup against us and Odessa, but it wasn’t a game where I feel like we truly got beat, but instead kind of beat ourselves.” Mental errors down the stretch were ultimately what ended up costing the Eagles deep into their sets. While this can be frustrating for the team, Fletcher said as the girls gain more varsity experience, they will learn how to navigate through that.

MOSES LAKE — An exhibit opening Friday at the Moses Lake Museum & Art Center is a team effort. “'Lost and Found’ brings together the work of Robin and Scott Mayberry in an exploration of loss, renewal, and rediscovery,” the museum wrote in an announcement of the exhibit. “Through layered abstract and representational works, many of which are created in encaustic, the artists consider what is obscured, what is revealed, and what remains as we find our way back to ourselves.” The husband-and-wife artist duo have noticeably different styles to their painting, but the pieces in “Lost and Found” fit together, Scott Mayberry said.

Mavericks swim hosts first meet of the season

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Mavericks girls swim team got their season started Thursday as they hosted a nonleague meet. Mavs Head Coach Tony Preston said this meet was a great start to the season for the team of 30 new and returning girls. “We’ve got a couple first year swimmers that are really going to contribute for us, and we have a good core from last year coming back,” said Preston. “We have a lot of depth, and as we train throughout the year, we’re going to see a lot of that top end speed come out in these girls.” The day started off with the diving event, and while the event wasn’t ranked, the coach said he still saw great performances from his returning divers Lexi Gruber and Mia Thompson.

Broncos survive ACH comeback bids in four-set win

COULEE CITY — The Lind-Ritzville Broncos (3-0) volleyball team was victorious over the Almira/Coulee-Hartline Warriors (1-3) in four sets, securing a 3-1 win on the road against a fellow state semifinalist squad. “They wore us down defensively, and they play at a different pace than we're used to playing sometimes, and we struggle with that,” Broncos head coach Cari Galbreath said. “We shouldn't, but it-I think it's also a new season, (we’re) trying to figure some things out and working together.” The Broncos looked strong, taking the first set by double digits. However, the Warriors settled into the game in the second and eventually earned the win narrowly. From there, the two teams continued to battle in a tightly contested game, forcing the Broncos to earn each point. LRS ultimately secured the win in two straight sets, but not before needing extra play time in the fourth set to win 28-26 and the game 3-1. Though a loss doesn’t feel great, Warriors head coach Katie Walsh was proud of the fight her team showed.

GRANDMA GREEN SAYS: Exercise your right to vote

Regarding voting, or the lack thereof in Grant County, I read the Columbia Basin Herald’s edition of Aug. 20 to learn that only 34% of voters took the effort to vote in the primary election. Fifty-nine percent of those 65 and older were the highest number of voters. Those 25-34 were the lowest number at 14%. Why is the voter turnout so dismal? Maybe people should educate themselves as to what their forefathers (women too!) did to ensure our right to vote, to govern ourselves and to live in a democracy – not in a kingdom with a king or queen ruling over us. The Pilgrims fled to our shores seeking freedom to worship as they chose and to govern and live as they wanted. So many things have been accomplished by working together via the judicial way.

QUINCY — The Quincy Jackrabbits girls soccer team (5-0) claimed a 4-1 victory at home against the Ephrata Tigers (0-5) Tuesday evening. This early-season preview for the Battle of the Basin showed highlights for both teams as they head deeper into their seasons. “We knew Ephrata was going to come in,” said Jacks Head Coach Javier Diaz. “Rival games are always rival games for a reason.” Tuesday’s game was a tight matchup in the beginning as both teams strived to be the first on the board. QUINCY — The Ephrata Tigers volleyball team (2-4) won in three sets on the road against the Quincy Jackrabbits (0-4) Tuesday evening in an early season matchup. Rachel L. Carrera, 83, passed away peacefully on Sept. 13, 2026, in Moses Lake, Washington. Born on April 4, 1943, in Montana, she was the daughter of Pedro Ledesma and Rosa Mesa Vasquez, who lived there at the time. Soon afterward, the family moved to Washington, where Rachel grew up surrounded by family, faith, and hard work. She attended school in Outlook through eighth grade and graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1961. She will be remembered for her generous heart, hard work and love of God and family. For many years she worked as a recruiter for the National Migrant Program, making friends with the children and families she so faithfully served.

South Dakota pulls away despite late push from Eagles offense

CHENEY — The Eastern Washington Eagles (1-2) came up short on the road against the University of South Dakota Coyotes 41-23 Saturday. Despite the loss, Head Coach Aaron Best thought his team played well, just struggled to capitalize on opportunities. "I think the overarching thought coming out of this is (that) we did not capitalize on the success we had," Best said in a statement by EWU Athletics. "We got them in third-down momentum again in the second quarter. A return went against us and then they earned the opportunity to score from deep. MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Sand Scorpions are hosting the Experience Power Sports Extreme Mudfest, which will include a $5,000 bounty hole and a $5,000 freestyle mud truck event at the sand dunes this Saturday. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the event starts at noon. “Honestly, I look forward to just seeing the evolution of some of these vehicles who’ve been coming for 10 years or more,” said Brandon Douglass, President of the Sand Scorpions ORV Group. “There are guys who’ve been coming several years in a row and every year they’re a little bigger or they’re a little faster, they’re a little badder.” The bounty hole will be a 700-foot-long mud pit with the winner being whoever goes through it the furthest or the fastest. Those participating in freestyle will have three minutes and will be judged on how much time they use, how much of the arena they used and overall “wow factor”.

Albert John Treiber, 97, passed away peacefully at his home on Sheep Canyon Road on July 23, 2026. Albert was born Jan. 20, 1929, in Yakima, Washington, to Albert and Mary Treiber. He spent his early childhood in Yakima before moving with his family to the Ephrata area in the late 1930s, where he joined his father on the family's Sheep Canyon ranch. Albert graduated from Ephrata High School in 1947 as valedictorian and a four-sport athlete. He enrolled at Washington State University for a year before being called home to work on the Sheep Canyon ranch.

Small increase in solid waste costs for Moses Lake residents

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake residents will be paying a little more in utility costs; the Moses Lake City Council approved a 3% increase in solid waste rates Sept. 8. The increase will go into effect Nov. 1. The increases will be minor – 68 cents per month for 48-gallon residential garbage can, and $1.11 per month for a 96-gallon garbage can. A commercial 96-gallon garbage can dumped two times per week will increase by $1.54 per month. But city officials warned that price increases may be coming that are outside the city's control.

Grant and Adams counties gas prices dip slightly as state, national averages rise

MOSES LAKE — Gas prices in Grant and Adams counties slipped slightly over the last week, even as Washington and national fuel averages continued climbing amid international supply concerns and rising crude oil prices. According to AAA data for Sept. 14, the average price of regular gasoline was $5.46 per gallon in Grant County and $5.48 per gallon in Adams County. That was down slightly from Sept. 8, when prices averaged $5.47 in Grant County and $5.55 in Adams County. Meanwhile, the statewide average increased from $5.51 to $5.56 per gallon over the week, while the national average jumped from $4.15 to $4.32 per gallon.

SEATTLE — The University of Washington Huskies hosted the Washington State University in a season-opening Boeing Apple Cup Sunday. After an intense battle, the Huskies claimed victory 24-10. Desmond Williams Jr. from the Huskies threw for 268 yards and a touchdown and scored on a 5-yard keeper in the 118th meeting of the two teams, according to a press release from UW Athletics. A statement from WSU Athletics said Caden Pinnick from the Cougars completed 16 of 25 passes for 142 yards with two interceptions and added 61 rushing yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Mavericks volleyball team (1-0) kicked off the 2026 season with a 3-0 win over the Hanford Falcons on Thursday. “They came out mentally strong, fundamentally strong and excited to play,” Head Coach Krystal Trammell said. The Mavs won all three sets, but each round was a unique battle of its own. In the first set, they held the lead the entire time, but Hanford kept it close, at times cutting their deficit to within one point before Moses Lake ultimately pulled away 25-18.

Mavericks dominate second half, defeat Richland 34-14 in season opener

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Mavericks earned a statement win on Friday, defeating the Richland Bombers 34-14 in the first game of the football season. The Mavericks started strong, claiming a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Bombers responded in the second quarter with 14 unanswered points of their own to tie the game before halftime. From there, Moses Lake turned on the afterburners in the second half, outscoring Richland 20-0 as they stormed to a win at Lions Field. “We shot ourselves in the foot a couple times with some penalties, and we know our offense is better than that,” Haneberg said. “Setback-comeback is what we talk about. It helps getting that missed field goal at the very end (of the first half). Gives us an opportunity to get some momentum, and then we just rode with it from there.”

EPHRATA — The Ephrata Tigers Cross Country team is already hard at work to be in top shape for the 2026 season. With a strong group of returning runners alongside a solid group of new faces, the Tigers are eager to hit the ground running this year. “I’m feeling energized,” said Tigers Head Coach Lyndsy Roberts. “We’ve got a good group, one of the largest groups we’ve had in a long time.” The Tigers roster has over 50 athletes that have been participating in early season practices between the boys and girls, who Roberts said have all been mixing together well.

MOSES LAKE — Despite seeing a smaller roster this year, the Moses Lake Christian Academy Lions volleyball team is looking to build off their success from last season. With strong returners, the Lions are on track to stay competitive. “We lost some people, but we’ll be able to fill in, so that’ll be nice. Not quite at the numbers that we normally have, but we’ll make it work,” said Lions Head Coach Dean Spurbeck. The Lions concluded their 2025 season with a 10-8 record after battling through a tough Central Washington B League. MLCA entered into the postseason district tournament where they entered as the fourth seed and fell to the fifth seeded Pateros in the second round.

OTHELLO — The Othello Huskies girls soccer team is preparing for another tough season in the Central Washington Athletic Conference. This year the Huskies are returning with an advantage as they bring back their full roster from last season. “We’re looking good; we’re trending in the right direction,” said Huskies Head Coach Victor Quiroz. “We’re bringing everybody back that we had last year on our varsity team, so we’re super excited. That makes it a lot easier going into the season.” Last season, the Huskies completed the regular season 6-9-1, which earned them a spot for the district tournament. Othello was eliminated in the first round of districts after a tight game against Prosser that ended in a shootout with a final score of 2-1.

Cougars look to return stronger for 2026

WARDEN — The Warden Cougars Cross Country team is preparing to get back onto the trails this season. While the group is small as of the early season, Warden is gaining traction for their combined middle/high school team. “So far so good,” said Cougars Head Coach Karla Banks. “A lot of these kids conditioned over the summer so that was really wonderful.” Banks said the Cougars did very well with earning new personal records last season, and everyone remained consistent in each oncoming meet. This year they’re looking to repeat that with goals to take a few athletes to state.

New faces, same goals for the Eagles

SOAP LAKE — The Soap Lake Eagles volleyball team might look a little different this season with a new head coach and varsity lineup, but the structure of what was built in previous years will remain the same. This season, the Eagles are gearing up to remain competitive in the Central Washington B League. “The amount of growth that we’ve had already in such a short period of time has been huge,” said Erin Fletcher, the Eagles’ new head coach. “A lot of it carries over from the summer and the work the kids put in during summer ball.” Last year, the Eagles concluded the regular season 12-5 and took second place in the District 5 tournament before heading out to state. Despite making a strong effort, the Eagles fell in the first round of the state tournament to Wahkiakum to end their season.

MATTAWA — After a season which exceeded expectations, the Wahluke Warriors (10-6) bring an experienced roster ready to return to the 1A state tournament. Only having to replace the center back spot, Head Coach Cele Lopez has a lot of confidence in this year’s team – and he’s not the only one. “Everybody feels more confident,” Lopez said. “Especially as a group, as a coach, I feel more confident. We have a lot of freshmen again. We rebuilt on every position last year, so we're going to be ready for whatever comes this year, it's going to be a challenge, but we're going to be ready.”

WILSON CREEK — The Wilson Creek Devils are ready for another season of volleyball as they return a little younger, but still experienced. This year, the Devils are striving to become more unified and play together as one. “I’m looking forward to watching this team come together and do something great,” said Devils Head Coach Shawn Shahan. “See them combine and work together and become one team. That’s our motto this year is ‘One team, one goal.’” Wilson Creek finished the season 6-14 last year and qualified for the district tournament after battling through the highly competitive Central Washington B League. The Devils made it into the first round of districts before ending their season against Easton.

MOSES LAKE — A Grant County Sheriff's Office investigation into a death at a residence near Travis Drive and Craw Lane on the former Larson Air Force Base Tuesday has resulted in the arrest of a 52-year-old man on suspicion of second-degree murder.

MOSES LAKE — Community organizations gathered at McCosh Park on Saturday to mark National Overdose Awareness Day, connecting residents with education, prevention tools and recovery resources during an event hosted by the Grant County Health District in partnership with the Moses Lake Farmers Market.

Quincy Intermodal Terminal to expand

QUINCY — The Port of Quincy will be expanding its intermodal rail yard. Commission chair Curt Morris said the port has an apparent low bidder for the project, but the contract award is delayed until federal rail officials give final approval for the funding. “We should have that (approval) this week, for sure,” Morris said.

Like other local districts, Quincy’s school enrollments declining

QUINCY — The trend is gradual, but it’s the same in the Quincy School District as other Columbia Basin school districts, and districts statewide – student enrollment is declining. For the 2026-27 school year, QSD officials are projecting enrollment at the equivalent of about 3,120 students, plus 48 children in the district’s transitional kindergarten class. The 2025-26 school year ended with the equivalent of 3,181 students, but the graduating senior class was considerably bigger than the incoming kindergarten class.

Quincy National Night Out scales down

QUINCY — Quincy’s National Night Out was more compact this year, which worked out well, said QPD Sgt. Joe Westby, who’s in charge of event planning for the Quincy Police Department. “National Night Out is a big event, and the fact that we’re able to shrink it up is like a breath of fresh air,” Westby said. “If you're always doing the same thing, it's kind of nice to switch things up and see how it works.” National Night Out took place Thursday on the block of C Street next to the police station, a shift from previous years when it was held at Lauzier Park. The smaller space meant fewer emergency vehicles for children to explore, but it also meant less walking for attendees. Grant County Fire District 5 brought a fire truck, and the Grant County Sheriff’s Office had a patrol boat. Renew, the Grant County behavioral health agency, had a booth and so did Quincy Partnership for Youth. Veterans Operation Creation sang the national anthem, and the Quincy Animal Shelter brought kittens that piled over each other making friends with passersby. As before, the QPD served grilled hot dogs.

Mavericks cross country team ready to take the next step

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Mavericks cross country team are gearing up for another successful season, as they look to build off a strong 2025 season. From Head Coach Larry Dagnons perspective, this year’s squad looks ready to take the next step. “They're better than last year,” Dagnon said. “We lost three scorers, so two from the boys team (and) one from the girls team, but they're mostly intact. Our girls are going to be very strong, (and) the boys are going to be very strong.”

Eagles suffer close loss in season opener

CHENEY — The Eastern Washington Eagles (0-1) suffered their first loss of the season and in conference play after a comeback by the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks 34-27, according to a statement by EWU Athletics. The Eagles scored first and built a sizable lead in the first half. After leading 7-3, the Eagles scored 17 unanswered points to go up 24-3 in the second quarter. Momentum then swung back to the Lumberjacks following a 100-yard kickoff return. They followed with 17 points to take the lead into the fourth quarter, part of 24 straight points from the NAU. Eastern managed to tie the game late in the fourth, but the 'Jacks managed to score a game-winning touchdown with under five minutes to play.

Quincy Police retirements leave big shoes to fill

QUINCY — There are some big shoes to fill at the Quincy Police Department. “We’re losing 48 years of experience between them,” Quincy Police Chief Ryan Green said at the retirement party for Capt. Jorge Trujillo and Det. Damon Powell Thursday. Trujillo, who grew up in Sunnyside, has been with QPD for 19 years, he said, coming on as a patrol officer fresh out of the military. From there he served as a field training officer, a detective and finally captain. “I consider him my left-hand man,” Green said. “He runs the operations side of the house … He knows the agency very well, and he knows the community.” Trujillo has some projects around the house to tackle now that he’s retired, he said.
