Ring In Spring-Celebrate With The Year's Best Bubble Toys And Games

Around 1940, smart and savvy cleaning supplies company Chemtoy decided to bottle bubble solution, thus creating a revolution in the toy business. At number 15 on Time magazine’s “ALL TIME-100 Greatest Toys” list, bubble solution is the top-selling toy in the world year after year, with bubble solution sales estimated at over $200 million per year. Who knew a simple mixture of soap and water could be so lucrative?

Elida Padilla
Elida Padilla passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016, surrounded by her loving family just a month before her 85th birthday. She had lived in Moses Lake over 50 years. Elida was born in Mercedes, Texas on March 20, 1931 to Enrique and Angelita Longoria (both deceased). She had four siblings; Delia Pena (deceased) of Leander, Texas, Oscar Longoria of Kennewick, Henry Longoria of Moses Lake and Herminia Hernandez of Pasco. Elida moved to Sunnyside in the early 1940s with two of her siblings. There she met and married Jesse Padilla. She later moved to Moses Lake with her 13 children where she attained her GED and took nursing classes while holding down two jobs at the same time and raising her family. She later went to work in the bakery at Buttrey’s Foods where she became known to many as the lady who gave cookies to the children. After working more than 20 years at Buttrey’s Foods, she was able to retire. Elida was an excellent cook and was popular with many neighborhood youth who congregated around her home at dinner time. Elida also enjoyed crocheting, embroidery and visiting with her extended family.

George Washington Bush has a special place in our history
I wish that Washington state history would include George Washington Bush as part of Oregon Trails or early settlers. Our children need to know about pioneer of different races. Most students do not know that there were many people of color involved in the early westward journeys in the mid- and late 1840s. George Washington Bush was African-Irish-American. He had inherited money from a wealthy white Quaker. Mr. Bush was painted by Jacob Lawrence, famous African-American artist. Information can easily be found in encyclopedias and on line. Moses Lake has many races living here and the more we know about each other, we will appreciate our unique differences and sameness as human beings. Information can easily be found online or in any encyclopedia. He and his family contributed so much to Washington state. Some of his children served in our state legislature.
Grassroots campaign emerges to repeal bathroom rule
Editorial
A new bathroom rule, created in December by the Washington State Human Rights Commission, has received plenty of attention in the past month or so. According to the rule, people can enter whatever gender restroom they choose, as long as it corresponds to the gender they identify with. For example, a transgender man can enter and use a women’s restroom. It doesn’t matter if the women or children using the restroom feel squeamish, uncomfortable or scared. That’s the rule and it carries the same weight as a law.
Hillary would make a good president
So much talk about Hillary Clinton, about truth and how Trump would love to see her taken to court. Everybody makes mistakes. We’re only human. Hillary has the knowledge and authority to become the first woman president. The only threat she is to Republican candidates is that she’s a woman. For people to lose trust, what about knowledge about what our government needs? She has great views about change in the system, in how to help people, in reform and bettering our laws for all to be equal, no matter about race.
Extended thanks
On Feb. 17, 2016, “Valentines for Veterans: Students spread the love,” an article by Ryan Minnerly, was published in the Columbia Basin Herald. Ryan, I just want to say that you are a very talented writer and did an awesome job depicting the colorful personality and love-infused whirlwind of events that transpired from an early-morning God calling. I am so glad that after numerous requests, and your kind patience, I was able to mix you into my schedule because I have received so many compliments regarding the story, and, well, I can’t help but emphasize the focus on how captivating and well-written your article was.
Lifetime appointment?
The death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia at age 79 should give us concern regarding the life expectancy of people accepting “lifetime” appointments. Life expectancy in general has been increasing over the past 200 years. My father (a pharmacist) once remarked “people are living longer because many diseases are no longer killing people at younger ages.” Bacterial and virus infections, as well as heart attacks, are not the same medical problems today compared to even 50 years ago. Organ and joint replacements are becoming even more common.

Education is the key to a bright future
Education, wisdom and knowledge is the key to success. Love is also the key to success. With love and education you can move mountains. With love and education you can do anything. It breaks my heart every day how Congress continues to cut funds out of education. Bless the poor teachers just doing all and everything they can to make it work. These teachers do it because they love the kids and they want to see the kids live a bright future.

It began 25 years ago, but who's counting
Feb. 13, 1991 was a special day for me. The first weekly outdoors column began on this day with my name on it. Forgive me, as I puff my chest a bit, but 52 columns a year for 25 years comes out to an even 1,300.
The rich are not the problem
As a nation, let us all stop being envious and angry at the rich and wealthy. We can all be rich if we spend a dollar and save a dollar. As a country, that’s our biggest failure: spending without thinking about tomorrow nor our future. The rich people who live in Moses Lake, they bless this city and keep it strong. And when I, James Earl Jones, become the future mayor of Moses Lake, we will cut spending and save this city much money. My advice to everyone is to start saving today for tomorrow and the future. The world is changing every day, and prices are getting higher and higher. People, today stop spending and start saving your money. As the saying goes “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” In closing, people, stop spending.

Government picks and chooses which laws to enforce
Where to start? A while back, law enforcement agencies were attending a conference in Chelan. Many agencies traveling there were speeding through a Washington State Patrol speed trap and none were ticketed. In Baltimore and Ferguson, whether the police are guilty or not guilty does not allow large groups of protesters to destroy public and private property, and then have some public officials tell the police officers to give them space. I am fairly confident that the cities did not help private businesses rebuild. Marijuana in Washington and Colorado, the states legalized it. And, just so you know, I am not against “pot.” If you want to be stoners, go for it. But the federal government has a law against this. Congress should change the law, but until they do, pot should be illegal.

The role of government
There is a great difference between speaking and acting due to ignorance, versus speaking and acting with evil intent. Ignorance means a person has not studied history to learn successes and failures. That applies not only to Nature’s Law (engineering, physics, and chemistry), but basic human psychology and prior governments.

Register, vote and make a difference
For years I’ve written letters about politics, our courts, veterans, police brutality, rights of the disabled and mental disabilities. So many topics, concerns that our presidential candidates should be aware of. Poverty has hit all over. The cost of living results in more and more homeless people. Here you allow and shelter Syrians. What about many Americans?

Sustaining stamina in the fight against cancer
Credit should be given to those who made the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation’s Country Sweetheart Ball possible. The event was a big success last weekend, raising more than $90,000 to help local cancer patients in their battle against the disease that affects so many people. The toll – physical, mental, financial and spiritual – is heavy on patients and their families. Much of the money – typically about $50,000 – goes toward gas cards for patients who are traveling back and forth between the Columbia Basin to treatment facilities in Wenatchee, Seattle, Spokane and the Tri-Cities.

The rule prohibits the requirement to use a facility that is inconsistent with the individual’s gender identity. The rule covers all public accommodations, including schools, according to Laura Lindstrand, a policy analyst for the HRC. MOSES LAKE — Unemployment dropped more that a full percentage point between December 2014 and December 2015. But unemployment traditionally drops in the summer and increases in the fall, and it followed that trend in 2015 with unemployment in December 2015 higher than in November 2015.

Dave Graybill: The Fishin' Magician
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced the expansion of steelhead fishing on the Wenatchee and Icicle rivers. On the Wenatchee River anglers may now fish from the Icicle Road Bridge to 400 feet below Tumwater Dam. This stretch of the Wenatchee is a favorite of many anglers, who have fond memories of fishing here in the past. I expect good participation in this part of the river.

Help show appreciation for the 1161st
The purpose of this letter to the editor is to request everybody’s help in displaying our appreciation to the members of the U.S. Army National Guard 1161st Transportation Company. In case you hadn’t heard, our government has made the decision there is no longer a need for the 1161st so it is being disbanded. The soldiers and equipment will either be transferred to another unit or surplused out. March 4-6, 2016 marks the last time for the 1161st Transportation Company to have a weekend drill in Ephrata, or anywhere.
Natalie Cole's death is the world's loss
The death of Natalie Cole caught me off guard, even though I knew that she been ill. She was painfully thin but still had the velvety voice. I was a freshman at Alcorn A&M College in Lorman, Miss., when her famous dad died. My roommates and I were glued to the radio. Nat King Cole and his family were like royalty. We would envy him in the best of situations. He had a fancy house with a swimming pool. We heard that Mr. Cole had a national TV show. We didn’t get to see the show in Lorman, Miss. Nat King Cole was loved by my grandmother, mother and myself. I remembering saying there will never be another velvet voice. We listen to RANDY, a radio station in Tennessee, play all of his hits.

Politics starts at the local caucus
We will elect the new president of the United States this year and you have the opportunity to be a factor in who the nominee will be for the party of your choice. Every political party will have caucuses throughout the atate of Washington in the next two months and unfortunately many people voting do not understand the power of attending a local precinct caucus. In our state we will eventually elect delegates to represent your party at a national convention to nominate the candidate of your choice to be the nominee for president of the United States. This starts at the local caucus in your neighborhood.
House Bill 2573: A good approach to attracting teachers
Editorial
With Baby Boomers retiring, public schools and the state need to ramp up their efforts to attract and retain quality teachers. We think House Bill 2573 is a common sense approach to doing so because it targets key problem areas, including low beginning teacher pay, help for rural and underserved areas, and boosting recruiting efforts.

Good words for AAU girls basketball
I am writing this in response to Carla Steffens’ letter regarding AAU girls basketball. First I would like to clarify that there are only two female fourth-grade girls coaches this year from Moses Lake and neither one of us have ever forfeited a game to Lake Roosevelt, or any other team for that matter. I am familiar with Lake Roosevelt’s fourth-grade girls team; they are very talented and clearly their coaches are doing a great job. The beauty of the AAU program is that it allows players to build skills, while gaining a love for the game, it also encourages players to compete at levels that will challenge them to get better. Lake Roosevelt is much better than any other fourth-grade girls team and while we all get better playing their team, we don’t pose much of a challenge to them. It is my understanding that the team was moved up because they were really good, which I see as a compliment. As far as self-esteem is concerned my girls have endured many losses as a team, but they continue to laugh, smile and cheer each other on. In fact their positive attitudes are an inspiration to me. I hope the lesson my kids are learning is that while winning is fun, what’s more important is learning to develop a love for the game and pushing yourself to get better. I also want to say thank you to the Moses Lake AAU association for all the time they volunteer to coordinate the league and for bringing better basketball to the Columbia Basin.
