Port of Quincy electrical project hoping to start generation in 2029

QUINCY — A project to bring a standalone energy source to the Quincy area could be in the testing phase by 2029. Port of Quincy Commissioner Brian Kuest said Wednesday that Colusa Indian Energy has completed a first draft of a proposal that eventually will be submitted to state and federal agencies.

MOSES LAKE — There was a whole lot going on at the Grant County Fairgrounds rodeo gate Tuesday, when the Moses Lake Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Business After Hours combined with the kickoff of the Moses Lake Roundup Rodeo. “It brings out some people who only go to one or two (chamber events) a year,” said Chamber Director Debbie Doran-Martinez. “The rodeo extends an invitation to all its major sponsors.” Doran-Martinez estimated that about 250 people came out to enjoy the warm sun, cold drinks and good food. Dinner was catered by Top Gun Concessions, and consisted of barbecued ribs with beans, salads and sides.

Sushik comes full circle ahead of first season at BBCC

MOSES LAKE — The next step in Liana Sushik’s athletic journey has led her to play for the Big Bend Community College Vikings volleyball team this fall after a successful career with the Soap Lake Eagles. Joining the Vikings is something she feels has deepened her love for the sport, she said. “I fell in love with the fact that there’s more than just high school volleyball; there’s another level,” said Sushik. “It’s like a whole new chapter and I’m so excited to see what I have next because there’s a lot that I’ve been through to get here.” Despite her success on the court, Sushik said she didn’t initially start out as an athlete.

"I probably got three calls in the first couple of weeks," Ortega said. "I was a little nervous." Those worries didn't last long. MOSES LAKE — When former Moses Lake Maverick Paige Richardson first arrived at Walla Walla Community College, she did not anticipate getting to play as much softball as she did in her freshman season, she said. “I didn't know what to expect just because it's a whole different world once you step into college softball compared to high school softball,” Richardson said. “I was used to playing, pitching a lot for the Mavericks. My coach pretty much depended on two of us pitchers, and it just worked out that way, and we worked really well as a pair, and we were able to back each other up in certain scenarios, so I wasn't expecting it, but I'm glad it worked out the way it did.”

MOSES LAKE — A Moses Lake man was booked on suspicion of possession of narcotics, possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of firearms after a search of his home turned up four guns he allegedly wasn’t allowed to possess.

The Nat Washington House has been approved for a William G. Pomeroy Foundation Hometown Heritage Marker, making it one of few sites in Washington state to receive the distinction. Masquers announce ‘Anastasia’ cast

SOAP LAKE — The Masquers Theater has announced its cast for “Anastasia: The Musical,” which will open in October. Emma-Jean Wydur will play Anya, a young woman with amnesia who may or may not be the youngest daughter of the Russian Tsar Nicholas Romanov II, who was executed with his family in the Russian Revolution of 1917. Ben McLain will appear as the con artist Dmitry, and Jeremy Hansen will play Vlad, an exiled Russian aristocrat. Alec Lobe will be the Bolshevik general Gleb. Christie McLain will be the Dowager Empress, the grandmother of the real Anastasia, and Auti Kirk will be her lady-in-waiting, the Countess Lily. Other members of the Romanov family round out the ensemble.

EPHRATA — The city of Ephrata welcomed its newest athletic club earlier this summer with Desert City Fitness setting up along Basin Street. Since their grand opening June 6, the club has worked to become a strong contributor to the community in Ephrata. “We just opened our doors and whoever comes in, that’s how we do it,” said Bryan Boney, owner of Desert City Fitness. Boney, who owns the club alongside his wife Tracy Fillion, decided to open Desert City Fitness to keep himself active after retiring six years ago. Lorraine P. Medrano was born Aug. 12, 1928, in Portland, Oregon, to Waverly and Helen Hedspeth. She entered the presence of her Savior on Aug. 4, 2026, at home, surrounded by her loving family, just eight days before her 98th birthday. Her love for animals began at a young age when her family moved from Oregon to Wapato to farm. She attended Wapato High School, graduating in 1946. On Aug. 26, 1950, she married the love of her life, Ralph B. Medrano, in Toppenish. Shortly afterward, they moved to Moses Lake, Washington, where they built their home and family on a foundation of love, hard work and faith.

Grid Kids expands opportunities this season

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Grid Kids football program is gearing up for the start of its 26th football season this fall. This year, alongside their tackle football program, the Grid Kids have expanded their flag football options. “It’s one of those things that you just don’t really know how well it’s going to go, but right now we’re looking pretty strong,” said Brian Gwinn, the Gird Kids administrator and communications contact. The tackle opportunities remain the same for third through sixth grade with third and fourth graders playing together and fifth and sixth graders separately from the younger players. The format for third and fourth grade will remain at a regular 11-man game, but for fifth and sixth grade there is consideration for moving down to an eight-on-eight format.

Grant County Fair coming next week

MOSES LAKE — Smoke or no smoke, the fair will go on. “We won’t cancel the fair,” said Grant County Fairgrounds Manager Jim McKiernan. “Ultimately, the decision comes from the county commissioners … The (Grant County) Health District is loaning us some air purifiers for the Commercial, 4-H and Ag buildings as well as the Huck Fuller (Building).” There will also be N95 masks available at the gate, McKiernan said, if anyone needs one. There are a few improvements that fairgoers might spot, including the return of mutton-bustin’, a petting zoo and a new permanent food booth offering smashburgers, McKiernan said. There are also some updates to the livestock barn to reduce temperatures, including porta-pools for the critters.

MLCA athletics enters new era under Todd Gregory

As he heads into his first year in the role, things are already expected to look different this school year. For instance, the Lions will not have a football team this season. “We did not renew our contract with Covenant (Christian School), so we lost some athletes this year,” Gregory said. “I think in the long run we'll end up getting some of those families that want to do athletics but stay in the Christian school atmosphere. I'm hoping that happens and we're able to get football going again.”

Carol Evelyn (Johanson) Strole, 93, passed into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Aug. 8, 2026. She was born at home in Lamesa, Texas on Nov. 8, 1932, to Sigurd C. Johanson, an immigrant from Norway, and Lorene G. (Ashby) Johanson. As a child, Carol was often asked to read the Bible aloud to her mother as she sewed to supplement a Depression-era income. She readily lent this skill in life, reading to family, friends, school children and her Sunday school classes. Her voice was memorable and her imagination so descriptive she could recount fantastical dreams at breakfast or tell mostly true childhood stories to captivate any age, teaching us, with a wink, to always cross our fingers behind our back to counteract any half-truth to be told.

Rita Kay Smith, 64, of Ephrata, Washington, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Aug. 8, 2026. Born on April 9, 1962, in Bellingham, Washington to Elmer and Beverly Hanson, she was adopted in 1966 with her sister Debra Rae by Keith and LaVeda Sherwood. Rita grew up in Moses Lake, Washington with a love for gardening. May 11, 1980, Rita met the love of her life, Allen Smith and graduated from Moses Lake High School a month later. Rita married Allen on Sept. 12, 1980, and went on to build a fulfilling life centered around her five children and a career in construction/remodeling, water/fire damage restoration, painting and long-haul truck driving. Her love for playing games, working and helping her children never stopped and continued up until she went to be with her Father in Heaven.

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake Christian Academy’s new administrator traveled a long way to answer the call. “I wanted to be a leader in a Christian school,” Laura Fulton said. “I never thought God would open the door all the way over here, but it was wide open and it was just the sign I needed.” Fulton, who arrived in Moses Lake the last week in July, had never heard of Moses Lake Christian Academy, or even of Moses Lake until a few months ago. In fact, until she flew out to her first interview this summer, she’d never been farther west than Missouri, she said. Fulton grew up first in Pennsylvania and then in Maryland, she said. Her last job was in New Castle, Delaware, which is within 15 miles of three other states. After that, eastern Washington looked very different.

Documentary will tell the story of Marlin music festival that never was

MOSES LAKE — Fifty-five years ago, Grant County almost had a rock music festival. “(The promoters) leased this land just outside of Marlin, started billing bands and everything,” said filmmaker Jacob Hoxie. “And then a few weeks before it all happened, the county took them to court and said, ‘You can’t do this.’” Hoxie is creating a documentary about Sunrise 71, the rock festival that almost put Marlin on the map. Many of the people who were involved have passed on, he said, but he’s still collecting memories from those who are still with us and would like to hear from local residents who remember it.

Brookdale Hearthstone’s Janet Gonzales retires after 39 years

MOSES LAKE — Janet Gonzales will leave a big hole when she retires at the end of the month at Brookdale Hearthstone after 39 years. “She knows everything about this building,” said Melinda De Santo, Brookdale Hearthstone’s business manager. “She knows it all. I don’t know how we’re going to manage without her, to be honest.” Emeritus at Hearthstone, as it was called then, was only a year old when Gonzales came to work there, she said. There was a total of five residents, and the building was split between a retirement home and an assisted living facility. The facility became all assisted living when Brookdale acquired the place in 2014.

Victory Village: Moses Lake’s wartime housing legacy

If you lived there, you called it The Housing. For nearly 19 years Victory Village was home to hundreds of new Moses Lake residents. The first inhabitants were drawn here when World War II thrust Moses Lake onto the national stage. The town, then a modest farm service community of a few hundred people, was transformed almost overnight. The establishment of the Moses Lake Army Air Base brought a surge of workers and military personnel, straining local housing and prompting a federal response that would shape the city for decades. In 1941, the First War Powers Act empowered President Roosevelt to direct funds toward wartime housing. Moses Lake, remote and under-resourced, was quickly identified as a prime candidate. One of the first housing efforts began in early 1943 when construction began on a regulated trailer camp, offering 200 units with amenities. The camp expanded to 300 units, accommodating 1,000 new residents.

OTHELLO — The city of Othello Parks and Recreation is holding registrations for the 2026 Fall Adult Co-Ed Softball League. Owner, alleged thief both arrested in vehicle theft incident

MOSES LAKE — An alleged car thief and the vehicle’s owner were both arrested Thursday morning, according to a statement from the Moses Lake Police Department. Sara Danielle Gallagher, 40, of Moses Lake and Daniel Daryl Littlejohn, 28, of Ephrata, were booked into Grant County Jail on separate charges, according to the Grant County Jail roster.

Mattawa man drowns in irrigation canal

MATTAWA — A Mattawa man drowned in an irrigation canal northeast of Mattawa early Sunday morning, according to a statement from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office. Johnny Sanchez Mendoza, 18, was driving a vehicle near the 7900 block of Wahluke Slope Road Southwest when the vehicle became stuck in a concrete canal chute, according to the statement. As Sanchez Mendoza and his passenger tried to push the vehicle free, Sanchez fell into the water and was swept away. His body was recovered about a half mile away. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Sanchez Mendoza’s body is in the care of Coroner Craig Morrison, whose staff will conduct an autopsy, according to the GCSO.

Betty J. Timlick passed away peacefully on July 28, 2026, in Grapeview, Washington, at the age of 91. Betty was born on June 29, 1935, in Shelby, Montana, to Archie and Cora Stratton. She was the third of four children. At the age of 14, she moved to Hot Springs, Montana, where she began working for Sylvia Timlick, – the older sister of her future husband, Don. Betty married Donald Timlick, and together they shared nearly 70 wonderful years of marriage. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in October 2022. Don passed away just two months later, and Betty missed him deeply.

Cowboy Breakfast to kick off fair week in new location

Jaeda Gonzalez continues multisport growth as Viking in sophomore season

MOSES LAKE — For Big Bend Community College sophomore and Ephrata native Jaeda Gonzalez, the work never ceased in the offseason as she prepares to return to volleyball and softball for the Vikings. With a strong athletic career behind her and a year of collegiate experience, the sophomore has her eyes set on improving alongside the BBCC programs. “As a team, we definitely want a winning season and also fun to watch,” said Gonzelez. “We want be fun to watch for everyone else and show that we can bring it.” Her athletic career began at home as she grew up in a family that has a strong passion for sports. Firefighters battle overnight blaze at Job Corps dormitory

No deaths have been reported, but officials say 36 people have been hospitalized.

Wahluke DiscoverWorks summer experiment proving successful

MATTAWA — The Wahluke School District experimented with a new summer learning opportunity, and it looks like a success. The district was one of the first group of schools in Washington to be selected for the DiscoverWorks summer program, the work of a Michigan-based foundation, the Ballmer Group. I remember Dachau. It is either late spring or early summer of 1956 – everything is in full bloom and green. We are taking a vacation through Germany, northern Italy, Switzerland, Monaco, France and Spain. One place we visited today is Dachau. I am 8, going on 9; Doll is about 7. Mom and Dad, I am sure, explain to Doll and me what a concentration camp is. They take no pictures with the Brownie, but I do have a few, vivid images of Dachau to this day. As we pull up to the camp outside of Munich, I see the greenest green meadows all around – so green, they hurt my eyes. The breeze flows through the grass, bending it softly to its will and sweeps across the meadows like moving ocean waves. It is so calming. I don’t understand why these fields are so green and others aren’t.

Last chance for fall 2026 youth soccer season signups

OTHELLO — The City of Othello Parks and Recreation is getting prepared to host another season of youth soccer in fall 2026. With the registration deadline set for Aug. 9 at 11:59 p.m., the league hopes to bring in as many young athletes as possible. “All of our sports do serve the elementary level kids, because anything after that they are already participating in school sports,” said Valerie Hernandez, Othello Park and Recreation Coordinator. “All of our sports they’re run by volunteer parents.” Fall soccer is set to begin play Sept. 22 and run through Oct. 15 with games being played Tuesdays and Thursdays. Othello splash pad progressing, pool options being considered

OTHELLO — The underground plumbing has been installed and the concrete has been poured at the new splash pad in Othello’s Kiwanis Park. Construction is scheduled to begin Aug. 17 to rebuild and extend the walking paths through the park.

Holy Cross Parish opens in Mattawa

MATTAWA — The Catholic population of Mattawa pulled off a remarkable feat, Yakima Bishop Joseph Tyson said. “For the first time in the history of the Diocese of Yakima, we have a church construction project that has come from predominantly Spanish-speaking parishioners,” Tyson said at the parish dedication Friday. “And most of the money has come from immigrant communities. This has never happened before.” Tyson officially dedicated the newly-named Holy Cross Parish in a ceremony attended by 20-25 priests, half a dozen deacons and enough parishioners to fill the 450-seat church building to overflowing. The previous building held only 150, said Fr. Lalo Barragan, pastor of the parish.

Proposed development prompts discussion of city street improvements in Othello

OTHELLO — The proposed redevelopment of a commercial site in the south section of Othello prompted discussion of what that development, and others, would mean for city streets along SR 24, and for the state highway itself.

Purple Party smaller but successful

MOSES LAKE — There were about 50 fewer people at the Purple Party July 16 than came last year, but those people accomplished a lot. “I don’t feel as though there was quite the participation we had last year,” said Karisti Cox, living sales specialist at Brookdale Hearthstone, which hosted the event. “However, the people who were there, were there with the intention to build their teams and do the fundraising. So while there weren’t as many people, we actually did better.” The Purple Party is sort of a pre-party for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The primary purpose is to prepare for the Walk, which raises money for dementia research, by organizing teams and making plans, but the event also raises funds in its own right. The Purple Party July 16 raised $770 in just two hours, Cox said.

Davis and Johnson reflect on Tillage League All Star team

EPHRATA — Ephrata’s Isaiah Davis and Mitchell Johnson both made the Tillage League All-Star team after having strong performances with the Tigers Baseball Club during the summer season. After competing in a few tournaments, the All-Star lineup finished the summer with a 4-7 record. “It was really fun,” said Johnson. “I enjoyed playing with new people and meeting all the new guys and it was a fun group of guys to play with.” The All-Star team got off to a slow start as they fell to the Central Washington Sixers 18U and then struggled to earn a win in the following End of Summer Classic tournament.

William Russell (Russ) Hall

October 18, 1932 – July 18, 2026

Russ was born in Blackfoot, Idaho to William and Florence (Hargraves) Hall. He was their fifth child. Russ graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1950. He joined the National Guard at the age of 17, serving three years before enlisting in the Air Force, where he spent four years serving his country. Russ married Elda B. Nielson on April 12, 1953, in Reno, Nevada. They had five children. During his service years, they lived in various states, including California and Texas. After his discharge from the military, he relocated his family to Firth, Idaho, where he worked as a welder for his brother. He later changed jobs and started to work for Sunspice. In 1965 he got the opportunity with Sunspice to relocate his family to Moses Lake, Washington. He remained with Sunspice until his retirement in 1997.

Smoke and unhealthy air quality to continue throughout the week

MOSES LAKE — The smoky skies and poor air quality are forecast to stick around the Columbia Basin, at least through most of this week. The National Weather Service issued an “extreme fire risk” warning for last weekend, and while no major fires were reported in Grant County, surrounding areas weren’t so lucky.

SPOKANE — State and local firefighting resources continue battling the Spokane Area Fires after Gov. Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency Aug. 1 amid what state officials describe as a record-setting wildfire season driven by drought, extreme heat and high winds.

Grant County Treasurer retires after 4 decades

EPHRATA — For Darryl Pheasant, it’s always been about the details. “He knew how everything worked,” said Grant Commissioner Rob Jones. “He knew all the accounts; he knew if the accounting was off, and he knew what the county accounts’ balances were all the time.” Pheasant retired at the end of June after almost 40 years as Grant County Treasurer, possibly the longest tenure of a county treasurer in Washington state history. Through his efforts, in 1995, Grant County became the first cash-basis county in Washington to open a county investment pool. The pool takes the money that the county collects from junior taxing districts like school or hospital districts and invests it so that rather than sitting in the county’s coffers, it generates interest, explained Grant County Commissioner Cindy Carter.

EPHRATA — Races for local, statewide and federal offices will be winnowed to two candidates in today’s primary election. Not all races attracted more than two candidates, so not all races are on the primary ballot. In Grant County, four people are running for Commission District 3, which opened when longtime commissioner Cindy Carter retired. In the primary, however, only voters who live within the commissioner district are eligible to cast ballots.

Jenkins, Perez earn preseason All-American, All-Big Sky from Phil Steele

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Make it three preseason All-American honors for Eastern Washington University’s Jaylon Jenkins (Safety) and Isaiah Perez (Defensive Tackle). Phil Steele, American sportswriter and analyst, released his preseason All-American teams, with Jenkins placing on the second team and Perez on the third. Steele also released his preseason All-Big Sky team, with eight players representing EWU.

Rage runs the table to win NAFA Summer Nationals

MOSES LAKE — The Washington Rage 16U (15-9-1) are the North American Fastpitch Association Summer Nationals champions after going on an undefeated tournament run over the weekend. In the aftermath of a successful finish to the summer season, the Rage are over the moon, Head Coach Bob Richardson said. “They had a great time,” Richardson said. “As we went through the second half of the season, we really gelled, and I think the girls became really tight this week because we spent a lot of time together, a lot of team bonding. I've gotten close with a runner-up (finish) here, but I've never won it. To win it, that's all the work that everyone has put in finally paying off.”

Moses Lake SGL plant waiting for buyer

MOSES LAKE — The SGL plant in Moses Lake is for sale, and proposals to buy it are due this week. Basin Ag Sales is handling the sale of the property in conjunction with Kidder Mathews, a real estate firm that specializes in industrial properties. SGL Carbon Fibers, based in Wiesbaden, Germany, built its plant in Moses Lake in 2010, to manufacture large-tow carbon fiber for BMW vehicle bodies. By 2015, it employed about 200 people and had doubled the plant’s production, according to the company’s website. But by 2020, SGL had begun laying off personnel, citing decreased demand for its product, according to Columbia Basin Herald archives, and operations ceased at the Moses Lake plant in the summer of 2025, according to SGL’s website.

Sharon Rae (Dafforn) Gossett, 75, of Ephrata, Wash., died July 26, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born March 4, 1951, in Bremerton, Wash., to William and Marguerite Dafforn, the oldest of four children. She grew up in Longview, Wash. and graduated from Mark Morris High School in 1969. As a young woman she attended an evangelistic meeting in Longview and gave her life to Christ. She understood everything that followed – her marriage, her family, her work, and her service – as a response to God’s grace and mercy. Sharon attended Lower Columbia College before transferring to Washington State University, where she earned a degree in education in 1973 and met David Gossett, from Ephrata. They were married Nov. 2, 1974, in Pullman.

Grant County voters urged to return primary election ballots before Aug. 4 deadline

EPHRATA — With just days remaining before Washington's Aug. 4 primary election deadline, Grant County election officials are encouraging voters to return their ballots as soon as possible to ensure they are counted. Ballots must be postmarked by Aug. 4 or deposited in an official ballot drop box by 8 p.m. on Election Day, according to Grant County Elections Deputy Rebecca Pettingill.

If not, from June to September 2024, we completed a shelving replacement project thanks to a generous local anonymous donor who contributed $100,000 through our Moses Lake Public Library Foundation. This allowed for increased mobility and visibility, along with a continued focus on providing more seating options. This shelving project also let us incorporate more space-efficient shelving and condense the number of materials across each collection, also allowing for more programming space and a dedicated Teen Area. While some areas may look like there are fewer books on the shelves, there are as many or more books than before the project began (we promise!).

Barrientoz duo find success a PNW Bagfest

MOSES LAKE — Father-son cornhole duo Camryn and Fabian Barrientoz found success in Spokane at the Pacific Northwest Bagfest. When they began competing six years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic, they never would have anticipated where they’d find themselves today. “Back in 2020 I didn't think that I was ever going to be this competitive into a backyard game that people drink, play and just get together,” Camryn said. “Now this is like a competitive sport. There are colleges actually giving out scholarships, and there's actually a high school and middle school in Grandview. It's pretty cool how Washington's picking up on that.”

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Mavericks girls soccer program recently returned from a three day soccer camp at Eastern Washington University. This experience provides players an opportunity to dip their toes into the water of college athletics and gauge their interest, Overland said. “This is our third year going, so we like to take a group of girls if we can get enough interest down there to get a little bit of the dorm experience,” she said. “It's a good bonding time for them and then get some drills in with the Eastern coaches and players, and kind of experience a little bit of what that's like.”
