BARE OUR SHELVES: Summer reading program draws record numbers

The Moses Lake Public Library wrapped up its annual Summer Library Program on Friday, Aug. 14. We had 604 participants, including 335 children (ages 0-11), 68 tweens and teens (ages 12-17), and 201 adults (ages 18 and up). We are happy to report that this was the largest number of adult participants we have ever had. With the help of NCW Libraries and the Friends of the Moses Lake Library, we provided 41 raffle prizes.
As the new school year approaches, reading at home year-round and maintaining those routines are crucial. Remember, we receive new books in our deliveries twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Also, don’t forget that our Winter Reading Program will begin in December, with more fun opportunities to enter raffles and win prizes as you meet your reading goals for the end of 2026 or the beginning of 2027.
One of the Moses Lake Public Library's two nonprofit organizations, the Moses Lake Public Library Foundation, recently volunteered at the Lioness Club of Moses Lake's Space Burger booth during the Grant County Fair. The Moses Lake Public Library Foundation meets on the last Wednesday of the month at 5 p.m. in the library staff room. Members can also frequently be found at the Moses Lake Farmers Market on Saturdays, giving away children’s books donated by the Friends of the Moses Lake Library and by the local nonprofit Care Moses Lake, which frequently purchases children’s books to donate. Please consider donating $30 or more to take home one of the Moses Lake Public Library Foundation’s heavy-duty canvas tote bags. All proceeds benefit your local library.

While our upcoming Sprayed Book Edges program on Saturday, Sept. 5 is full, interested patrons can join the waitlist on our website. Participants are invited to bring their own book to customize their own sprayed edges. All other supplies will be provided. We plan to offer another Sprayed Book Edges program on Saturday, Dec. 12.
Also, an upcoming idea our library staff has been exploring is to host a Bedazzled Books program where participants will be provided with supplies to bedazzle a book cover design of their choosing with rhinestones.
Bare Our Shelves will appear bi-weekly and features honest musings from your local library staff. Austin Foglesong is the Supervising Librarian II of the Moses Lake Public Library, a branch of NCW Libraries. He has a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Washington. Connie Baulne is the Operations Supervisor of the Moses Lake Public Library. She specializes in controlled chaos and creating a good schedule.
