Know your PUD
There are a lot of great things about living in Grant County, and one of them is our Grant PUD. Yet we frequently don’t think about it except to grumble at having to pay one more bill every month. Sure, the Grant PUD keeps the lights and the heat on, but it also maintains recreational areas, supports fish and wildlife conservation and connects Grant County to the rest of the world through its high-speed fiber network. The abundance of inexpensive electricity attracts industries that would otherwise locate elsewhere, while at the same time making possible the large-scale irrigation of our farms. In short, the Grant PUD keeps this county humming along.

Alcohol responsible for many evils in society
I have been a medical doctor for the past 37 years in the state of Washington, who has been in practice in Ephrata and at one time had satellite clinics in different cities including Moses Lake, Sunnyside and Yakima. As a Muslim who never drinks or smokes I am very disturbed at the speed with which they are getting rid of fruit orchards such as apples to make room for vineyards. Alcohol, according to the teaching of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), “is the mother of all evils.” Many of the accidents on the highway and medical problems related to the liver, brain, et cetera are related to the abuse of alcohol. In my judgment there is no social drinking. It has became purely business which might be subsidized by the government. I am against that.

Scalloped, mashed or fried, spuds make an easy meal
Potatoes are an easy meal to make up. Good quality ones can be found cheaply at every megamart. I prefer the yellow ones, but russets are good for most any home preparation. The easiest is to preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Wash up the desired number of potatoes for baking. I figure a single medium one per person if part of a larger meal, or a single large one if it is going to be the whole meal. Place in the hot oven. Bake about 60 minutes, or until a fork stuck into it meets no resistance in the middle. The time needed until they are done will depend on how large the potato it. When done, carefully remove from oven and serve. Suggestions include topping with butter, sour cream, shredded cheese, sliced green onions, chili, gravy, cheese sauce, et cetera.

Democrat supports Dent and Warnick, but not Manweller
I’m a Democrat but don’t assume you’ve got my vote. Yes, I’m a Democrat but I’m not a stupid Democrat. This year I’m voting for Tom Dent. I believe Tom Dent has done a great job and yes I know he’s running against a Democrat but that candidate has not shown me anything that makes me feel that Tom doesn’t deserve another two years. Judy Warnick is running unopposed but she has my vote. Both she and Tom are tirelessly working for our 13th District and they both deserve our votes regardless of party affiliation. That brings us to Manweller. I will not vote for Manweller. His reputation at CWU, in Olympia and his alleged barroom behaviors are an embarrassment. He would not get my vote even if he was a Democrat. The Republicans need to cut him loose and come up with a better candidate next time around. Send a message, vote him out and cast your ballot for Sylvia Hammond. Sylvia is a great candidate, moderate, and local and she doesn’t hang out in fancy restaurants or lounges trying to sweet talk young men. Remember Republican friends, it’s a two-year term; if you don’t like Sylvia come up with a real challenger in 2020, but in the meantime get the Manweller phony out. Don’t play politics just because Manweller sings to his choir. By the way, I voted for Hinkle too.

Manweller allegations disturbing but not plausible
I have read the disturbing allegations against Matt Manweller, and I too have been disturbed by them. I met Matt when I exited the Army at 33 and went back to school at CWU; he was the advisor of the College Republicans and I was a member.

Royal's Rudy Flores places 23 at invitational meet
MOSES LAKE — Rudy Flores took a deep breath, then looked down at his shoes for a moment. When he looked back up again the Royal senior just nodded. “We’re going to dedicate this season to Silver. I talked with Connell and they went in on it,” said Flores of his running mate Royal Hall of Fame runner Silver Beltran, who passed away last spring. “It’s kind of cool that Connell is dedicating their season too. I mean, we want to beat them in everything and they want to beat us, but Silver earned his respect and we’re going to go out and compete as hard as we can in his memory.” A year ago, Flores and Beltran proved that distance running isn’t about where you come from or how big your school is, it’s about training hard and racing well and they finished 10th and 11th, respectively, in the predominantly 4A field.

When I began as a commissioner, rates were set rather haphazardly with no consideration given to the cost involved in serving the various rate categories. The commission decided to hire an outside consultant to look at our rates and do a “cost-of-service analysis” (COSA). It showed that several adjustments were needed to better allocate rate increases. We received that report but did not take action based on its findings. A couple years later we commissioned another analysis by a nationally recognized energy services group. This time the commission was much more involved in the process to help us better understand it and its conclusions. This report came to the same conclusions as the first.
Tariffs shake up apple market
QUINCY — Farming is always a gamble – it might get cold at the wrong time, it might rain at the wrong time, it might hail at the wrong time. And that’s just the production side. And the market side – well, in 2018 the market side is pretty shaken up.
Cindy Carter is an excellent county commissioner
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our current elected Grant County commissioners, but most especially Cindy Carter. I recently sent a letter regarding juvenile diversion, rehab and restorative programs and potential savings via video hearings. Within a few business days, I received a phone call from Commissioner Cindy Carter, alleviating my concerns, taking the time to educate me and get me up to par regarding issues addressed and ensuring me they are making it a priority to look into my proposal. She left me with the utmost assurance of her genuine care and concern for our children in this area, but she actually just has a really big heart and genuine care for everybody in this area. She is always so nice, she always tries to keep everyone’s spirit lifted, and will move mountains to help a person in need. Because she is up for re-election, I recently took the time to read her campaign biography. Cindy is like a superwoman, I just wonder if she gets to sleep. When she is not serving as a commissioner, she is working on the farm, taking care of family, very involved in her church and helping implement programs for the best interest of the people of Grant County. I know that she has worked very hard to further help implement suicide assistance care in this area, and is pushing to offer and implement a text hotline, because that is how much she cares to save a life. That is how much she cares to make it easier for family, teachers, friends and peers of someone who is hurting to be able to get appropriate outreach care. Thank you, Commissioner Carter for your elected services. I pray that God continues to bless and favor you in everything you do.

Wahluke ushers in Ryan Antos Era with a win
WAPATO — The Wahluke Warriors kicked off the Ryan Antos Era with a bang Friday night, shutting down and nearly shutting out Wapato in a 23-7 victory on the road in a nonleague game to open the 2018 season. The first-year head coach was happy with what he saw from a team working a brand new offense for the first time under game conditions. “We still intend to pass quite a bit this season, but offensive line was just so dominant at the line of scrimmage, we ended up running for 349 yards,” Antos said. “Both Jose Celaya and Dominic Gray ran the ball hard all night.” Celaya, a 5-foot-6, 160-pound junior quarterback rushed for 141 yards on 20 carries and Gray carried the ball times for 94 yards. Where the Warriors’ offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage, the Wahluke defense just dominated. Linebacker Gerardo Ledezma, a 5-11, 230-pound senior, scored on a defensive touchdown. Danny Ayala led the team in tackles with nine and nose guard Pedro Castaneda was a huge run stopper in the middle. “Defensive coordinator Joe Wirtzberger had the defense fired up,” Antos sad. “We didn’t allow a defensive point. They finally scored on a pick-six, but our defense pitched a shutout.” The road doesn’t get any easier for the Warriors. They host Granger on Friday for their 2018 home opener, they travel to Royal City to face the three-time defending 1A state champion Royal nights (Sept. 14). They host perennial state tournament contender Connell (Sept. 21) and wrap up Sept. 28 at Benton City against Kiona-Benton.

Othello kids have a summer to remember
OTHELLO — Man, I’m still grasping at straws, trying to hang on to one last summer day. It seems like every year we get cheated out of August with all the wildfire smoke pushing the air quality fun meter over the 280, making the sun look like a second moon in “Star Wars.” But I would like to catch up on some of the cool stuff coming out of Othello during the Dawg Days or in this case the Huskie Daze of Summer. Isaiah Cano Garaza put his topwater bait to good use this summer. Actually, I don’t know what Isaiah was working. I’m just fascinated with bass. I swear you could drag a dead skunk across the water and they’d come up to hit it if it got too close to the lily pads. But anyway, back to Garza, the Othello Husky was named the Angler of the Year for the Washington state B.A.S.S. Bassmaster High School schedule. Garza was the top fisherman in two events and the runner-up in two others to bring in the big haul. Garza and his partner qualified for the national championships in Tennessee where they placed 33rd in the 337-boat field. Keep on turning young man, but remember when all else fails, chum and dynamite works every time. Then there’s Othello striker Juan Tapia, who had a chance to play soccer in the big city and bright lights of Las Vegas back in February. The Huskies 2018 team offensive most valuable player plays with a select team called Washington East out of Spokane and had the chance to play in Indiana this summer when the guys let the country know East Side got game. Tapia was leading scorer for the Huskies last season with 15 netted balls, which earned him an all-CWAC selection and an honorable mention in the 2A all-state voting. Maybe his most donning accomplishment was his participation on the Othello Unified Soccer state championship team, which earned a gold medal in the Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle. Having covered Juan for the past couple of seasons, I fully expect him to carry the torch on the Reese Jones front flip after every goal scored this season. Got one last Othello kid who needs a little love. Patrick Azevedo had a junior golf summer to remember. Azevedo, who won the Washington Junior Golf Association District 4 championship at Moses Lake Golf Club earlier in the summer, qualified for the Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour Cup in Las Vegas in November. Azevedo, who won three events and finished runner-up in another, also qualified for the North American Junior Am in Arizona in December. Arizona in December? I’m thinking the lad needs a caddie, but I’m not all that interested in carrying the bag or walking the course. The Rocky Mountain Junior Player of the Year certainly doesn’t need my input on which stick to swing. Pat’s also a leadership/ASB student at Othello High School. OK, now that we have that covered it’s time to move into the fall season. Let the games begin.

3 injured in accident near Mattawa
MATTAWA — Three people were injured when a semi-truck lost its flatbed trailer and load, which hit a passing car about a mile north of the Vernita Bridge Monday night. The driver and passenger in the car, Michael Stewart, 68, and LaDonna Stewart, 61, both of Mattawa, were transported to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland; so was the driver of the semi, Harvir Atwal, 45, Surrey, B.C. The accident occurred about 8:15 p.m., according to a report from the Washington State Patrol. Atwal was driving south on Highway 243 when he ran off the road and overcorrected, the WSP report said. The flatbed trailer he was pulling lost its load and rolled across both lanes of traffic, hitting the Stewarts’ car. The car, a 2011 Toyota Camry, ended up on the shoulder, while Atwal’s truck, a 2010 Peterbilt, came to rest in the road. Atwal was cited for driving with wheels off the road.
Smooth opening to school year in Othello
OTHELLO — There’s a meteorological date for the end of summer - which in 2018 is Sept. 20 - and the date summer really ends, which is the opening of school. And after a week or so, school seems to be going OK in the Othello School District. District superintendent Chris Hurst said enrollment is 4,354 students, not counting the district preschool. The preschool will have 162 kids; that’s up from 79 two years ago, Hurst said. The projected enrollment for 2018-19 is 4,434 students. District officials have changed the configuration of the district’s four elementary schools, expanding them from kindergarten through fifth grade to kindergarten through sixth grade. Three of the schools had enough room to accommodate the sixth graders, but portable classrooms had to be added at Wahitis Elementary. Installation of the portables should be completed by mid-September, Hurst said. Until they’re ready Wahitis sixth-graders will attend class at McFarland Middle School. For 2018-19 seventh and eighth graders will attend McFarland, and the preschool classes will be housed there also. “All in all it’s been a really good opening,” Hurst said. Sixth-graders are in an environment they’re used to, so incidents of harassment seem to have declined, he said. Moving sixth grade to the elementary schools was the first step in a three-year project to reconfigure the district’s elementary schools into the kindergarten through eighth grade format. District officials decided to suspend further planning for the time being, until a committee appointed by the Othello School Board makes recommendations for any changes to the district’s facilities. District officials commissioned a study of the cost of reconfiguring schools, and making some additional changes. The study estimated the cost would be about $32.6 million, without any accommodation for growth. In light of that, Hurst said planning for the 2019-20 school year will begin after the committee delivers its report.

Warden teacher contract details released
WARDEN — Warden School District teachers will make a minimum of $45,166 for the 2018-19 school year, under the terms of a three-year contract approved by Warden Education Association members and the district. The two sides reached tentative agreement June 28, and the contract was ratified by the Warden School Board at its Aug. 9 meeting. The WEA ratified the contract earlier, but the details were not released until last week. The school board vote was 3-0, with board member Bryce Cox abstaining. Cox’s wife works as a substitute teacher, he said, and has worked at Warden often enough to be represented by the WEA. The 2018-21 contract was the first negotiated by the district following sweeping changes in teacher compensation by the Washington Legislature. Previously all teachers statewide were paid according to the same salary schedule. Changes enacted by the legislature left each district to negotiate its own deal with teachers. The legislature did establish a minimum and maximum salary, and provided substantially more money for all employees. Warden school board members, administrators and teachers opted to keep a salary schedule, which provides more money for teachers as they gain experience and take continuing education classes. A first-year teacher with a bachelor’s degree will start at the minimum salary. For the 2019-20 school year, that increases to $46,521 and to $47,917 in the 2020-21 school year. Salary for a teacher with five years experience and 45 continuing education credits will be $42,397 in the first year. For the 2019-20 school year, that teacher will make $53,968, and in 2020-21 that teacher will make $55,588. A teacher with 10 years experience, a master’s degree and 45 continuing education credits will make $68,984 in the contract’s first year, $71,053 in 2019-20 and $73,185 in 2020-21. Teachers can reach a maximum salary, which depends on experience and continuing education. As an example, a teacher in Warden with a bachelor’s degree and no continuing education hits the max salary in 10 years. Warden’s salary schedule hits maximum at 16 years, with a PhD, or with a master’s degree and 90 continuing education credits. The max is $89,130 in the first year, $91,804 for the 2109-20 school year and $94,558 in the 2020-21 school year. That’s the base salary. Teachers also are eligible for supplemental contracts for extra work related to education outside the school day. Those too are based on years of experience and continuing education. The contract also includes extensive rules for teacher evaluation - two different methods, depending on when the teacher started teaching - along with teacher training, insurance and paid leave, among others. The entire contract is available on the district’s website, under the school board tab.

9-year-old girl raises more than $20,000 for K9
MOSES LAKE — Kenna Morrison was raising money to help the Moses Lake Police Department establish a second K9 team, and MLPD Chief Kevin Fuhr said he thought Kenna could’ve raised as much as $12,000. Wrong. Kenna and her mom Jesyka made one of those big checks, and when Kenna presented it to the chief the amount was $20,275. Nobody in the crowd assembled for Kenna’s presentation expected that. “Kenna just bought us a dog and (officer) training,” Fuhr said. “I am just amazed.” Kenna did have some help. She asked businesses all around town for donations, “literally door to door,” her mom said. Kenna said she collected donations from 63 businesses. Kenna, who’s 9 years of age, is a budding small business owner - she’s been making slime all summer and selling it at the Moses Lake Farmers Market each Saturday. (See the story in the Aug. 28 Columbia Basin Herald.) She was making money, and decided she wanted to give the proceeds from one weekend’s sales to a charitable project, her mom said. “I just wanted to help people,” Kenna said. Jesyka Morrison is a veterinarian, and Kenna and her brother Kellan show dogs, Kenna’s dad Brad said. In fact, she qualified for state competition next weekend. So a project involving dogs appealed to her. “The county (Grant County Sheriff’s Office) has five dogs, and the city only has one dog,” Kenna explained. The dog itself will cost about $10,000, and the officer training is about $10,000, Fuhr said.

Faith: Truth or philosophy?
I have heard it said that faith is a philosophy. The dictionary defines philosophy as a set of beliefs. Is there a difference between the two? Over the past several years churches’ highly esteemed leadership has defined faith as believing and trusting. Has the church allowed faith to become a set of beliefs? Nearly all of our esteemed leaders preach a beautiful message of the Gospel and then tell us to ask Jesus to come into our life and believe he is there. The scriptures teach us we are to come by faith that does not come from ourselves but is a gift from God. Faith is a gift; believing is a choice, an act of obedience to a command he has given individually and personally. Our community has been called to revive this faith and develop a right relationship with him. He is our righteousness and through this we can find unity. He is our only source of faith.

County treasurer offers perspective on MLIRD assessment billing
Misleading information has created a false narrative regarding the Moses Lake Irrigation & Rehabilitation District (MLIRD) 2018 assessment billing. In prior years, the MLIRD sent the assessor a rate. The assessor applied that rate to land and improvement values and created the assessment. This process can only be done by the assessor. The treasurer’s function is to bill the taxpayer. For the last few years, the MLIRD produced an actual assessment roll for treasurer as required by state law. This required formality did not change the process of creating the assessment. The assessor continued to use the district provided rate applied to land and improvement values to create yearly assessments.

Look for area placekickers to make a difference this football season
I love the sound of the popping pads, the sweat, the exertion, the smell of wildfire smoke lingering in the air. Well maybe not the wildfire smoke, but the rest makes for good Friday Night Lights, which starts on Friday around the Columbia Basin. But once you get away from the sweat, the exertion and banging of helmets - there’s a group of young guys I think will bring a serious impact to the game during the 2018 season. The era of placekickers is among us. Yep, little guys that go out and make a half a dozen plays a game when it matters most. Hey, the Denver Broncos won a Super Bowl with five field goals and a defensive touchdown most games. I’m telling ya, Columbia Basin placekickers are going to rock.

Wahluke football ushers in Ryan Antos Era
MATTAWA — The destination is always the same, the Tacoma Dome on the last Saturday night of the season. But the Wahluke Warriors will take a different road to get there this season under the direction of first-year head coach Ryan Antos. Antos was an assistant in St. Regis, Mont., before that he spent three seasons at Kiona-Benton, but this is his first time in the head coaching role and he’s ready to put his stamp on Waluke football. “I like to run a two-back set and throw it around a little bit, so the guys are learning a whole new offense this year,” said Antos. “They’re used to running a double-winged T and running the ball. But I think we have a number of different weapons we can use this year.” Jose Celaya will be on point at quarterback. The 5-foot-6, 160-pound junior has the skill set, both throwing and running the football when the time is right. He’ll be joined in the backfield by running backs Eli Barajas (5-7, 198, sr.) and Luis Gonzalez (5-10, 190). The wide receivers can expect to see quite a bit more action this season under the new-style offense. “I plan to keep it simple for the guys. Eli should have a pretty good year running. He’s quick with pretty good speed and power,” Antos said. “But we’re going to throw it a little more this year, depending on down and distance.” Logan Marlow (6-0, 195), Jesus Cisneros (6-1, 160, sr.), Isaac Sanchez (5-7, 150, jr.) give Celaya a wide variety of targets at wide receiver. “Isaac’s pretty quick, but I would call all of them speed guys when they get in the open field,” Antos said. “The idea is getting first downs, but we’ll take our shots downfield when we get them. Most of it will be high-percentage stuff, get the ball into our playmaker’s hands. It’s high school football, there’s a lot of missed tackles turned into big plays.” On the defensive side, Antos said he likes an aggressive 3-4 scheme with linebackers flying to the ball. Barajas will be in the middle, directing the action. Returning all-SCAC East selections outside linebacker Gerardo Ledezma (5-11, 230, sr.) and defensive end Daniel Ayala (5-11, 175, sr.) are expected to lead a salty bunch of defenders. The Warriors are coming off a loss to Naches Valley in the district tournament a year ago. The plan is to advance to the state tournament. When you play in the SCAC East or 1A for that matter, all roads go through three-time state champion Royal. “I knew about Royal and Connell from my time at Ki-Be, so it’s not like I’m some new guy from Montana coming in,” Antos said. “The top four from our conference advance to the district tournament, so even if we don’t make that big jump right away, we can still make it to the district tournament and advance from there. It’s still going to be a dogfight in the middle of the pack.” Wahluke opens the 2018 season on the road at Wapato on Friday, then hosts Granger (Sept. 7) in the home opener. From there, it’s straight into the SCAC East firefight at Royal (Sept. 14) and home against Connell (Sept. 14).

Huskies looking to go deep into the 2A state playoffs
OTHELLO — The Othello Huskies knocked on the door at the Washington 2A state football tournament last season, losing to Steilacoom in a heartbreaker in the Round of 16. The eye on the prize is always to win the last game in the Tacoma Dome and the Central Washington Athletic Conference North champions are preparing to go deep into the playoffs again in 2018. “The goal is always to bring home a district title. Last year, we played our butts off and came up a couple of points short. This year, our kids are really hungry to move on to the quarterfinals and go deep into the playoffs,” long-time assistant Kevin Hensley said. “We have a special blend of kids. We have team chemistry and we’re ready to make that run.” They return CWAC defensive player of the year Isaiah Perez (6-3, 240 jr.) at defensive end and cornerbacks Efrain Palomares (5-8, 160, jr.) and Liddell Giles (5-8, 165, jr.) on the back end to lead an experienced defensive squad. Throw in free safety Alex Gonzalez, linebacker Eric Gomez (5-8, 160, jr.) and defensive end Elijah Roylance (6-1, 240, jr.) and Hensley likes what he sees with his defensive unit. “With Perez, we can rush him from the edge. We can rush him with his hand on the ground. He can rush from linebacker. We’d like to rush Isaiah in every way humanly possible,” the defensive coordinator said. “We’re looking at ways we can be less predictable on defense. Isaiah has increased muscle mass, he’s been working real hard in the weight room and he’s one a bunch of guys we’re super excited about.” They did lose all-CWAC linebackers Sam Azevedo and Trevor Hilmes to graduation. Junior cornerback Patrick Azevedo, another all-CWAC first-team selection, decided to focus on his golf career, but the Huskies also return second team all-CWAC linebacker Anthony Veliz (5-8, 165, sr.) in the linebacking corps. On the offensive side of the ball, they moved Perez around a little bit last year, moving him from tight end to running back. They were most effective dialing up the running game with Perez as the featured back, then springing Hilmes and quarterback Kyler Villarreal off the edge with that quick burst. Both Hilmes and Villarreal are gone, but they still have that quickness in Isaac Barragan (5-9, 160, jr.) and Estevan Ochoa (5-7, 165, jr.). Othello has had the luxury of DJ Guzman as a three-year starter at quarterback over the past several years. Last year the switched to Villerreal three games into the season when Guzman went down. But now they move into uncharted waters a little bit this year with both Guzman and Villerreal having moved on. Senior Gage Pruneda and sophomore Logan Hollenbeck are working under center. “As long as Roger Hoell is the head coach, Othello will always be physical and running the football,” Hensley said. “But both our quarterbacks have a variety of athletic talent. Logan brings a lot of leadership. He’s pretty unshakable. He has character and the kids respond well to him. “Gage is pretty quick, a good athlete. He’s played a lot of football for us in different positions. So we have a number of different ways we can go.” Othello opens the season on the road Friday with a non-league game against 1A Connell. They host three-time 1A state champion Royal in what’s turned into a pretty good Columbia Basin rivalry over the years in the home opener Sept. 7.
