GRANGER — Royal boys and girls cross country used a pack mentality to win the first South Central Athletic Conference meet.

The boys’ top finisher Fernando Alvarado was seventh in 19:44.08, however, most of his teammates were right behind him as the Knights placed seventh through 12th with all runners separated by less than a minute.

Royal cruised to first with 35 points, comfortably ahead of second-place Granger (51).

Isaac Immel of Riverside Christian won the race in 18 minutes, 48.33 seconds. Wahluke’s Tanu Brock was fifth in 19 minutes, 14.05 seconds.

It wasn’t a loaded field in the girls’ race as Royal was the only team to register in the standings with 15 points.

Abigail Delay led the Knights’ group, finishing first in 22:38.83. The Knights placed first through sixth.

Karen Arellano of Wahluke finished in 28 minutes, 4.80 seconds.
