4th District candidates discuss federal spending, immigration reform
EPHRATA — Economic development, federal investment and immigration policy are among the issues shaping the race to represent Washington's 4th Congressional District as voters weigh their choices ahead of the Nov. 3 general election. No decisions made on possible Ephrata School District bond
EPHRATA — Ephrata School District patrons will have one more chance to express their opinions on a possible district construction bond in a “listening session” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Ephrata Middle School Library. Ephrata Superintendent Ken Murray said district officials will use the information gathered from community discussions to determine their recommendation on a possible bond to the Ephrata School Board. District voters rejected a $75 million, 25-year construction bond proposal in February 2026. Murray said he started talking with ESD patrons in early March in an effort to determine what the community would – and could – accept in a bond proposal, if district officials decide to try again. “I tried to get out and find out where the community was at,” Murray said.
Mavs pile up 43 runs in sweep of Ike
MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Mavericks (14-4) extended their win streak to four Tuesday, as they swept the Eisenhower Cadets 21-0 and 22-3 at home. The Mavs are building momentum in a busy final week of the regular season. “I'm super proud of the way (we played), this week's a grind with three double headers,” Head Coach Mike Hofheins said. “This is a tough grind at the end of the season, but I'm glad we scheduled that non-league game because I think it keeps us sharp.” After sweeping the Walla Walla Blue Devils 8-3 and 19-11 on Monday, the Mavericks carried the momentum from those victories and put together a dominant performance. Game one saw strong batting and seven runs in the first inning. From there, their high-powered offense and strong pitching earned them a shutout win over the Cadets.

WA officials consider steep cut to developmental disability services
Adjusting eligibility could cost $13 million less amid the state’s budget woes, but would cost 2,655 people their services.
A Washington state agency has floated cutting services for more than 2,600 residents with developmental disabilities with the goal of saving money to close a looming budget gap. As part of its requests for the state’s next two-year spending plan, the Department of Social and Health Services suggested restricting eligibility for services could save $13.3 million, about $6 million of which would come from the state’s general fund. The proposal would raise the bar by requiring people with developmental disabilities to show they need support with more activities of daily living to be eligible for state-paid services than they do now. These include bathing, dressing, eating and taking medication.

Wilson Creek harvests some community fun
WILSON CREEK — Whatever Wilson Creek’s Harvest Festival may have lacked in fancy, large-scale attractions, it more than made up for in good community fun. “It’s just kind of a ‘Relax, have fun, visit with your neighbor’ (way) to bring the community together,” said Shirley Billings, leader of the committee that organizes the festival. The committee consisted of about 12 people, Billings said, and they could be easily spotted around town by their bright orange shirts. The fun was all home-grown and mostly free, including a fun run that also included plenty of people walking and ambling, and a parade that ran down the length of Railroad Street, Wilson Creek’s main drag.

Alzheimer’s Walk raises money for dementia research
MOSES LAKE — A record number of people turned out at McCosh Park Sept. 19 to do their part in fighting dementia through the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. “We had a wonderful number of participants,” said Julie Reathaford, walk manager for the Alzheimer’s Association, who is based in Tri-Cities and organizes the Moses Lake walk. “We had more people than we’ve ever had.” The number of participants on the Walk to End Alzheimer’s website is 236, but a lot of people registered the day of the event, Reathaford said. Those registrations had to be sent to Seattle to be processed, and the final numbers aren’t back yet. The same applies to the funds raised at the walk. The website showed $32,480 raised, or 72% of a $45,000 goal, as of Monday but donations are still coming in, Reathaford said, and will continue to until the end of the year.

US Supreme Court orders another look at how WA political maps are drawn
The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday set the stage for another redrawing of Washington state’s political maps. On the first day of its new session, the court accepted a legal challenge to the boundaries, then remanded it to a lower court to determine if the way a federal judge drew the lines in 2024 complies with a ruling earlier this year in a Louisiana redistricting case. Monday’s action will not affect next month’s election. But it could lead to the state’s legislative district boundaries changing before they’re next scheduled to be redrawn in 2031, depending on the pace at which the process proceeds.

Guest workers and beyond: The Bracero Program
The Bracero Program was an agreement with Mexico, originally crafted during World War II to ease labor shortages in the United States. The program outlasted the war and from 1942 to 1962 guest workers were brought from Mexico to work in the agriculture and railroad industries. The word bracero translates as “manual laborer” and during the war years and beyond, Moses Lake farmers benefited from that labor. Nationally, nearly 4.6 million Mexican citizens entered the U.S. for temporary work during the 22 years the program was active. In 1944, one hundred and thirty young men from Mexico arrived to harvest Grant County crops. The numbers of braceros here only increased after this initial group.

It's just refreshing to see that they're working on things, they're getting better, they're doing what they're supposed to do, and that's all I want.” The Huskies showed dominance early, with Gonzales scoring all four of his touchdowns through the run in the first quarter alone. By halftime, Othello built a commanding 41-0 lead over Quincy. From there, the Huskies backups got some playing time as they started the second half. Theresa (Terry) Campbell
Nov. 5, 1941 – Sept. 27, 2026
Theresa (Terry) Campbell received her heavenly wings on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026, at the age of 84, leaving behind a family who loved her dearly and a lifetime of quietly helping others. Theresa was born Nov. 5, 1941, in Grafton, North Dakota, the daughter of Florian and Sophie (Pokrzywinski) Kasprick. She was a devout Catholic whose faith showed most clearly in how she treated people. If someone needed help, she helped, usually without anyone else knowing about it. She spent countless hours walking alongside those struggling with addiction, offering understanding, encouragement and a helping hand. She also had a special heart for veterans, even bringing homeless veterans home for a shower, a meal and clean clothes, and then helping them navigate the system to receive the VA benefits they had earned. She never wanted recognition; helping someone get back on their feet was enough.

Held at the Washington State University Tri-Cities campus, the hour-long debate focused on issues affecting residents throughout the district, including affordability, Social Security, healthcare access, tariffs and economic development. “The issues discussed today are not partisan issues. They're kitchen-table issues that affect people and families every day,” AARP Washington Advocacy Director Cathy MacCaul said.
Summit to explore cybersecurity at local level Wednesday
MOSES LAKE — The digital world is sometimes described as being like the Wild West, and like the American frontier of bygone days, it’s filled both with opportunities for a better life and dangers lurking in the dark corners. Avoiding those dangers will be the focus of a free summit at Big Bend Community College Wednesday. “Everybody’s affected by cybersecurity,” said David Mabee, marketing director for NCW Tech Alliance, which supports technology adoption and education in north central Washington. “It’s not just an IT issue; it’s an everyday issue, with all the different ways people are trying to get your information.”
Mavs win dual meet at Eastmont
EAST WENATCHEE — The Moses Lake Mavericks swim team had a successful evening on the road Wednesday as they travelled to Eastmont for a dual meet. By the end of the meet, the Mavericks won with a score of 114 to Eastmont's 61. "It was a great meet," said Mavs Head Coach Tony Preston. "We haven't travelled in a long time. We do a lot of home meets because of the facilities in our league, so the travel to Eastmont was a great chance to get some experience in another facility." Heading into another training facility brings challenges since the environment can be different and travelling can make the athletes feel a little tired. Preston said their focus heading into Wednesday was to put their best foot forward and try to give their best performance in each event.

Some of the money will be used for upgrades to the ambulance entrance at the Coulee City Medical Clinic, according to a port press release. The grant was awarded by the Grant County Commissioners. “The award enables the port to move forward with construction-ready plans for a new library building. The library is currently operating inside the medical clinic, which restricts clinical space and prevents the facility from functioning at full capacity,” the press release said. “Prior facility assignments have documented the need for a larger, purpose-built library to meet current and future community needs.”

The game came down to penalty kicks, in which Othello came up just short and the Vikings won 3-2. "It came down to just the little mistakes," said Huskies Head Coach Victor Quiroz. "They got two goals on my defender just slipping and then the girl just had a breakaway towards the goal. They did a good job and capitalized on that mistake." The game was competitive from the start with both the Huskies and the Vikings showing high energy throughout the first half. Selah was first to score, but the Huskies rallied with a goal by junior Abcde Garza to tie the game 1-1 at halftime.

Eagles sweep Hornets, extend win streak to four
SOAP LAKE — The Soap Lake Eagles (5-4) earned a dominant 3-0 win over the Oroville Hornets, extending their win streak to four straight, with the last three coming in straight sets. “Oroville is a very scrappy team. We just watched them last week reverse sweep Wilson Creek, so we knew that they were going to be tough,” Head Coach Erin Fletcher said. “Our goal was to come in and just put it away. We didn't necessarily do that the third set, but those first two sets we did do a good job of trying to come out and be aggressive early on, handle what we could on our side, and try to put the game away early.” The Eagles were determined to start fast in the first set, which they did by being the first to score five points, Fletcher said. From there, they cruised to a 25-14 set win. They continued to dominate on the court, only allowing four points by the Hornets in set two as they won that as well. However, Oroville showed they weren’t going away quietly, giving the Eagles a battle in the third set, but Soap Lake managed to pull away 25-21 to seal the three-set win at home.
LETTER: Well, well, well
Well, well, well, what are those Democrats up to now? They have total endorsement of the Democratic Socialist Party of America to join their cause. What, Really? Naw, can’t be. The Dem Party of FDR, JFK and Bill Clinton is no more, gone. Now it’s the party of AOC, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. After years of brutal fighting to keep them out of America, the Dems have now placed them on your ballots. Any vote for any Democrat, in any capacity, at any level, is your sign of acceptance and approval. Now is the time to think, “Is my hatred of Donald Trump more powerful than my love for America?” Time to put your Trump Derangement Syndrome away.
Huskies fall 3-1 to Selah on the court
OTHELLO — The Othello Huskies (2-5) fell to the Selah Vikings (5-4) at home Tuesday evening. Despite starting the match with a win in the first set, the Huskies fell in the last three to give Selah the win. "We started the game really strong," said Huskies Head Coach Isabella Hollibaugh. "That was a great first set that we played as a team with our high energy and continuing to put the gas on the pedal. I was really impressed with our team and obviously, Selah woke up in the second and third set, but I was really proud of my girls for finishing that first set and executing it." The Huskies started out strong in the first set as they pulled ahead of the opposition. The two teams battled close, but Othello ultimately came out on top to start the evening with a 25-21 victory.
GRANDMA GREEN SAYS: Thoughts on the current scene
As I drive around town, I see a busy, peaceful community, a community which has been ours for well over 56 years. Little Moses Lake is a safe haven for many, as are most communities in America. I think at age 85, I’m seeing things from a whole new perspective. What if we failed to read a newspaper, watch the television news or interact with social media? We would be oblivious to what is actually going on in the world.
